Ziam (2025) by Kulp Kaljareuk Film Review
Image
In recent years, the glut of zombie movies released globally has seen the genre return to its roots, weaving political subtext into tales of shuffling hordes ripping the living to pieces. Director Kulp Kaljareuk embraces this approach with his latest feature, “Ziam,” a high-octane, Muay Thai-infused hybrid that blends themes of global apocalypse, food shortages, and authoritarian rule. Now streaming on Netflix, it presents a compelling fusion of action and horror set in a dystopian Thailand.

In this bleak near-future, former boxer Singh (Prin Suparat) struggles to build a better life alongside his girlfriend Rin (Nuttanicha Dungwattanawanich), a nurse at a local hospital. During her shift, Rin discovers a patient infected with a mysterious virus, which soon spreads to others in the building, turning them into flesh-hungry zombies. When Singh learns she’s trapped inside, he rushes to the scene,...

Friday, July 11 – These 9 New Horror Movies Released This Week
Image

Here’s all the new horror that released from July 7 – July 11, 2025!

For daily reminders about new horror releases, be sure to follow @HorrorCalendar.

Ziam (2025) Movie Ending Explained: How is Rin Rescued?
Image
In the not-so-recent history of movies, there’s been a growing curiosity—and even admiration—for what we might call the ‘silent action’ film. These are often dismissed outright: high-octane montage reels with a clear-cut hero and villain, strung together by a plot so thin it barely qualifies as narrative. But when approached through the broader lens of action cinema history, these films become fascinating case studies. They lay bare the tropes, clichés, and, occasionally, the surprising nuances of the genre’s storytelling language. Only two years ago, Nikhil Nagesh Bhat’s “Kill” drew all the right attention for weaponizing its seemingly generic ‘Ddlj-on-a-train’ plot into one of the most viscerally charged martial arts rampages in recent Indian cinema.

While I’m not deeply familiar with the history of Muay Thai in Thai cinema, the sheer volume and delivery of action in “Ziam” (2025) reminded me of what “Kill” pulled off.

Ziam’s Zombie Origins: Did Infected Piranhas Lead To An Outbreak?
Image
The first act of the Netflix horror thriller, Ziam, suggests that the zombie outbreak was likely caused by a contaminated fish. The opening voiceover of the film revealed that the melted glaciers in the polar regions had exposed the world’s oceans to a deadly bacteria that led to the death of millions of fish. In the very next sequence, we saw some men, working for a food industrialist, Mr. Vasu, CEO of the Vs Corporation, taking out crates of fish from a washed-out vessel. It could be possible that this shipping vessel went into the ocean before water receded from the shores and caught the fish, which was already poisoned by the bacteria. Meanwhile, Mr. Vasu, who was quite a wealthy and well-connected individual in Thailand, got his hands on this vessel and arranged for men to unload its cargo so he could sell the fish for a hefty sum of money.

Netflix Unleashes Thai Action-Horror ‘Ziam’, Pitting Muay Thai Against the Undead
Nuttanicha Dungwattanawanich and Mark Prin Suparat in Com unhas e dentes (2025)
Netflix has released Ziam, a Thai-produced film offering a distinct cultural take on the action-horror genre. The movie blends a classic zombie apocalypse narrative with the national martial art of Muay Thai. This fusion is embedded in the film’s title, a portmanteau of “Siam,” the historic name for Thailand, and a “Z” for zombie, symbolizing the undead invasion.

A Desperate Siege

Set against the backdrop of a world grappling with severe food shortages, the story follows Singh, a former professional Muay Thai boxer played by Mark-Prin Suparat. Singh’s plans for a quiet retirement are destroyed when a zombie outbreak engulfs the hospital where his girlfriend, Rin, a doctor portrayed by Nuttanicha Dungwattanawanich, is working. Trapped within the besieged medical facility, Singh must use his fighting skills to protect Rin and a young boy named Buddy (Vayla Wanvayla Boonnithipaisit) whom he finds amidst the chaos. The plot unfolds as a claustrophobic siege,...

Master of the House Ending, Explained
Image
Kaimook orchestrates an intricate revenge plot filled with betrayals and power plays. Phupat and Mawin's feud distracts viewers from Kaimook's master plan. A dramatic showdown reveals Kaimook's machinations and the fate of the wealthy family.

Netflix has always seemed to have a keen eye when it comes to international selections and its latest drama a Thai production is no different. Created by producer-director-writer Kulp Kaljareuk, Master of the House comes across as more sadistic than any series youve probably already seen in this class-clashing genre. The seven-episode limited series which premiered on July 18th will easily shock American audiences with every entry. In the first episode alone, there is a surprise marriage between the patriarch Rungroj and the housekeeper Kaimook. In the usual jaw-dropping fashion though, things go awry when the very same senior figure mysteriously dies just a few minutes later.

Before the viewer can even ask questions about...

Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival Reviews and Interviews 2023
Image
Bifan has established itself as one of the most significant festivals in Asia regarding the genre cinema of the region, with their program always being quite interesting through its focus on Korean cinema firstly and then of Japan and the rest of the region, along with a number of international titles. As such, the fact that the local industry is in trouble was more than evident this year, when genre movies in particular suffered, mostly due to issues with writing and also due to financial ones. It is true that Korea's top filmmakers are at the top of the world, but it has become obvious that below that level, the quality drops significantly.

Nevertheless, the aforementioned does not mean that the programs was without a number of gems. “Iron Mask” about a kendo athlete carrying a trauma, “Her Hobby” with its transition from a family drama to a horror and...

Film Review: The Up Rank (2022) by Kulp Kaljareuk and Vathanyu Ingkavivat
Image
That playing games has become a proper profession, with people actually competing against each other in arenas filled with audiences, is a fact that has been going on for years. As with every new money-making opportunity, though, corruption and illegal by-products do appear, with “The Up Rank” dealing with the concept of rank boosting in popular mobile shooting games, where good players earn money to raise the rank of others.

“The Up Rank” is screening at Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival

U is a young gamer, whose father is constantly bugging for help in the print shop he runs on his own, but to no avail, as the kid's mind is definitely on other things. Both his father and his girlfriend nag him to get a job, but U is just too obsessed with gaming to do so. An opportunity arises though, when he is approached by a group of boosters,...
