Crime’s Still Cool: 'The Bad Guys 2' Is a Stealthy Sequel with Bite
Image
Following the success of ‘The Bad Guys’ in 2022, DreamWorks returns to the scene of the crime with a sequel that’s just as slick and entertaining. ‘The Bad Guys 2’ picks up where the original left off, with the crew of animal criminals adjusting to their new lives as good guys. But redemption isn’t so easy, especially when you’re used to the adrenaline of a getaway and the thrill of a perfectly pulled-off heist. Not to mention the whole city remembers your life of crime. Directed by Pierre Perifel and written by Etan Cohen and Yoni Brenner, the sequel doubles down on the stylized animation and witty dialogue that made the first film feel fresh. DreamWorks once again delivers a film that doesn’t talk down to its younger audience while also appealing to grown-ups in the room. The Bad Guys 2 Review — Fun Heist Comedy is a Worthy Sequel
Image
The Bad Guys 2 is a direct follow-up to 2022’s The Bad Guys, which was a box office success and a hit with fans and critics alike. It was only a matter of time before DreamWorks Animation would greenlight a sequel. With much of the original team returning, DreamWorks and Universal should have another hit on their hands.

The Bad Guys 2 Plot

Following the events of its predecessor, the now-reformed titular Bad Guys are trying their hardest to make the world see them as good guys now. But after years of high-profile heists, that is proving quite difficult. When they try to help the police catch a new team of thieves — The Bad Girls — they instead find themselves manipulated into helping them pull off perhaps the biggest heist the world has ever seen. Can they find a way out of it and cement their new status as the Good Guys?...

‘The Bad Guys 2’ Review: DreamWorks’ Patchy Family Animation Takes Time To Find Its Groove
Image
The first Bad Guys (2022) stood out for several reasons, primarily for a voice cast that sounded like the most stellar Sundance movie ever. The reason it worked, however, is that it capitalized on parent fatigue, replacing the black-and-white lecturing of the average Disney morality tale with subversive shades of grey, asking kids to root for a criminal gang of animals that, for a time, are only pretending to reform (until they inevitably do for real). This premise immediately sets up a tricky double negative for the sequel: Where do they go next? By pretending not to have not reformed all along (or not)?

This question is staved off for a good 15 minutes or so by a hectic opening sequence set in Cairo five years previously. Crime lord Mr. Wolf (Sam Rockwell) has put his squad to work on a heist involving Egyptian billionaire Mr. Soliman (Omid Djalili). Mr. Shark (Craig Robinson) leads the attack,...

The Twilight Saga Star's Forgotten Tarzan Movie Swings Onto a New Streaming Home
Image
2013's Tarzanis about to make its way to a whole-new streaming home.

Per Peacock, Tarzan starring the voices of Kellan Lutz, Spencer Locke, and Trevor St. John is set to become the latest addition to the platform's ever-expanding library of animated features. Tarzan will be available for streaming on Peacock beginning April 1.

Directed by Reinhard Klooss from a script co-written by Klooss, Jessica Postigo, and Yoni Brenner, Tarzan stars Lutz as the voice of the titular adventurer in a version of the classic story that comes with a decidedly sci-fi bent. The film kicks off with a journey into the jungles of Uganda, where Tarzan's parents, John and Alice Greystoke, portrayed by Mark Deklin and Jaime Ray Newman, are in search of the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs and exudes its own unique form of energy. After a helicopter crash leaves only the young John Jr., aka Tarzan, alive,...

'Ice Age: Collision Course' Review: Thaw and Order
John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, and Ray Romano in A Era do Gelo (2002)
What's the use of getting all pissy about a kiddie cartoon? Watch Ice Age: Collison Course and see how you feel. The fifth entry in the Ice Age series is a loud, lazy, laugh-starved cash grab that cynically exploits its target audience (I use the term advisedly) by serving them scraps and calling it yummy. Even two-year-olds can see through the hustle.

You can't blame the animators, who do what they can to spark the visuals. But screenwriters Michael Wilson, Michael Berg and Yoni Brenner are running on less than empty.

Ice Age: Collision Course movie review: where is a mass extinction when you need one?
The Ice Age flicks are the cinematic equivalent of drive-through nuggets of reconstituted chicken slurry served by a bored teenager in a cardboard hat. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): really hate this series

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Manny the Mammoth is back! In this Very Special Episode of Ice Age, Manny gets exasperated by the fact that his wife, Ellie, and daughter, Peaches, are independent creatures with minds of their own: “Women! I don’t get ’em!” he exclaims [insert laugh-track clip of a 1967 studio audience roaring]. Watch what happens when Manny forgets his wedding anniversary — he’s gonna be in trouble with the missus! [studio audience groans dramatically] And then there’s Peaches’ upcoming wedding to loveable doofus Julian. [studio audience: “awwwww!”] Is it the end of Manny’s world now that his little girl is officially all grown up? It just might be… what with that massive asteroid heading straight for planet Earth!

This Tarzan Movie Isn't Looking Any Better with a New Trailer
Constantin Films has released a new UK trailer for their CG animated adaptation of Tarzan. Unfortunately, the movie doesn't look any better. I like the story of Tarzan, but this just doesn't look like a very good adaptation of the classic adventure.

While in a remote part of Africa exploring a mineral cache in a mysterious cave, entrepreneur John Greystoke and his wife Alice are killed in a tragic helicopter crash, leaving their three-year-old John, Jr. to fend for himself. Rescued by Kala, a gentle ape, the traumatized child is brought up by a band of mountain gorillas as one of their own, learning the ways of the wild as he grows into a strong and indepdendent young man known as Tarzan. At 14, Tarzan first encounters another human: Jane Porter, a pretty and intrepid teen visiting Africa with her naturalist father. His contact with a creature so like himself leaves...

Trailer – Tarzan Returns to the Big Screen in 3D Motion Capture
It was over a year ago that we saw the first posters for the latest incarnation of Tarzan. This time we get to see a film both in 3D and shot completely using motion capture (the same effect that was achieved to create films like Avatar).

The latest iteration of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic story will be arriving on the big screen next summer, this time under the direction of Reinhard Klooss (Animals United). Kellan Lutz (Twilight, Immortals) leads the motion-capture cast, alongside Spencer Locke (Resident Evil: Afterlife) as Jane, and Jaime Ray Newman (A Town Called Eureka), Robert Capron (Diary of a Wimpy Kid), Mark Deklin (Gcb), and Trevor St. John (One Life to Live).

Klooss is directing from a script he co-wrote with Jessica Postigo (The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones) and Yoni Brenner (Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs).

One of the most classic and revered stories of all time,...

Full Trailer for the CG Animated Tarzan Movie
We've got a new full trailer for the 3D animated retelling of Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic jungle tale, Tarzan. The movie was directed by Reinhard Klooss for Constantin Film, and unfortunately, it doesn't really look that good at all. The CG animation is pretty cheap looking. Video games are far superior to the stuff we are seeing in this trailer.

Tarzan 3D was adapted for the screen by Jessica Postigo (The Mortal Instruments) and Yoni Brenner (Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs), and stars Kellan Lutz (Twilight) as Tarzan and Spencer Locke (Resident Evil: Afterlife) as Jane.

There's no word on when the movie is being released. I won't be seeing it when it comes out, anyway.

First Trailer for 3D Mo-Cap Tarzan
Here's the first trailer for director Reinhard Klooss' 3D mo-cap retelling of Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic jungle tale Tarzan. I totally forgot all about this project which has yet to find a U.S. distributor. The film is slated to open next summer in international markets.

As Blastr points out, the effects on this thing look waaay dated. It seems they tried to strike a balance between kiddie animation and photo-realistic CGI. I feel Steven Spielberg struck the right balance between the two for Tintin, but Tarzan doesn't quite stack up. It just looks cheap. I'll have to wait for another trailer to see if they actually look to have a good take on the story.

First Trailer for Mo-Cap Animated Tarzan 3D
Kellan Lutz (The Twilight Saga) as Tarzan and Spencer Locke (Resident Evil) as Jane are featured in a trailer for Constantin Film’s motion-capture 3D animated family flick Tarzan.

Directed by Reinhard Klooss from a script he co-wrote with Jessica Postigo (The Mortal Instruments) and Yoni Brenner (Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs), the film is slated to hit theaters in Germany next summer.

This 3D project looks like it belongs in a video game instead of movies and due to a worrisome article about German filmmakers sounds like typical German radical Greens wanting to hijack Tarzan for political propaganda.

An updated Tarzan story set in modern-day Africa about Tarzan as the orphan son of billionaire adventurers who died in a plane crash, leaving him to grow up in the jungle, raised by apes. Meanwhile, Jane is the daughter an African guide and is committed to the conservation and preservation of the African jungle,...

Kellan Lutz & Spencer Locke Sign On for New Animated Tarzan Film
Constantin Film, the German film production and distribution company behind the WWII film Downfall (Der Untergang) which has become famous for it's Hilter reaction internet meme, is moving forward with an animated feature based on the classic story of Tarzan. Kellan Lutz (The Twilight Saga) will voice Tarzan while Spencer Locke (Resident Evil: Afterlife) will voice his love interest Jane in the film that will be directed by Reinhard Klooss (Animals United) off a screenplay by Klooss, Jessica Postigo and Yoni Brenner. The Edgar Rice Burroughs story of Tarzan has been adapted for over 89 live action and animated productions over the 100 years since it's creation years, most famously with Olympic swimmer Johnny Weissmuller in the title role as well as the 1999 Disney film. Kellan Lutz: Tarzan 3D Movie
Kellan Lutz (photo), best known for playing Emmett Cullen in the Twilight movies, and Resident Evil actress Spencer Locke, will star in the performance-capture 3D movie Tarzan, adapted from Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic tale, and to be directed by Animals United’s producers / directors Reinhard Klooss and Holger Tappe. Needless to say, Lutz will bring Tarzan back to life, while Locke will play Jane. The screenplay was written by Klooss, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs‘ Yoni Brenner and Jessica Postigo, whose sole listed credit on the IMDb is Harald Zwart’s The Mortal Instruments, currently in pre-production. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it updates Burroughs’ story by having Tarzan’s parents killed in a plane crash, the CEO of Greystoke Energies as the film’s chief villain, and Jane as an environmentally conscious heroine. Come to think of it, the first "update" isn’t something really new: Boy’s...

Tarzan Getting the Motion Capture 3D Movie Treatment
Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic novel Tarzan is getting yet another big screen adaptation. This time it will be a CG animated 3D film shot using motion capture technology. It doesn't sound like this project is the same one that Footloose Craig Brewer was attached to direct last year. This seems like a completely new project that popped up out of nowhere.

The movie will star Kellan Lutz (Twilight) as Tarzan, and Spencer Locke (Resident Evil) will be taking on the role of Jane Porter. Reinhard Klooss will direct the film from a script that he wrote along with Yoni Brenner and Jessica Postigo.

According to THR the script is a larger update of Burroughs' classic jungle character. For example, "Tarzan’s parents, billionaire adventurers, are now killed in airplane crash rather than being marooned with their child. And the movie’s villain is the CEO of Greystoke Energies, a...

Minnie Driver, Tony Goldwyn, Wayne Knight, and Rosie O'Donnell in Tarzan (1999)
Kellan Lutz and Spencer Locke Join Tarzan
Minnie Driver, Tony Goldwyn, Wayne Knight, and Rosie O'Donnell in Tarzan (1999)
Kellan Lutz has boarded Constantin Film's Tarzan to play the title character, with and Spencer Locke set to play Jane. The film will be a performance-capture 3D production.

Reinhard Klooss, Yoni Brenner and Jessica Postigo adapted the script from Edgar Rice Burroughs' original story, while giving it a modern-day twist.

In the update, Tarzan's parents are killed in an airplane crash rather than being stranded with their child. Jane is the daughter of an African guide and is committed to the conservation and preservation of the African jungle. The film's bad guy is the CEO of Greystoke Energies, a man who took over the company from Tarzan's deceased parents. Tarzan and Jane eventually work together to defeat the mercenary army of Greystoke Energies.

Reinhard Klooss and Holger Tappe are directing with Robert Kulzer producing.

Tarzan comes to theaters in 2013. The film is directed by Craig Brewer.

Kellan Lutz Will Beat His Chest as 'Tarzan'
Kellan Lutz: From the Lord of the Sea to the King of the Jungle.

The "Immortals" star will soon be swinging from a vine as he's signed on to play the title role in a new version of "Tarzan," according to Deadline.

This new take on the classic adventure character will be directed by Reinhard Klooss ("Animals United") from a script by Jessica Postigo (who will be adapting the upcoming "The Mortal Instruments") and Yoni Brenner ("Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs"). "Tarzan" will also follow in the footsteps of Disney's recent take on "A Christmas Carol" as a fully animated CGI feature that utilizes motion capture performance.

So, sorry, ladies — that bare chest is going to look a little cartoonish.

The project is being set up at Constantin Films, which is currently at least one step ahead of Warner Bros., which has also been looking to do a "Tarzan" movie.

Kellan Lutz & Spencer Locke Are Your New Tarzan & Jane Now
We've come a long way since Johnny Weismuller (look him up kids). It's the new millenium and we're gonna get a new Tarzan and Jane to swing on a vine into the multiplex.

Deadline reports that Kellan Lutz aka Emmett Cullen, is now signed up to lead "Tarzan." Guess David Cronenberg and David Michod weren't returning his calls (ouch, burn sauce!). Meanwhile, Spencer Locke, who is probably best known for her role in "Resident Evil: Afterlife" is in talks for Jane. Excited yet? Well it gets better/worse. Backers Constantin are gonna be spending some bucks on this to make it mo-cap with animated CGI for some reason. Maybe Lutz's pecs will look better or be improved via digital trickery? Anyway, Reinhard Klooss (never heard of him) is directing and he co-wrote the script with Jessica Postigo ("The Mortal Instruments") and Yoni Brenner ("Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs").

Kellan Lutz, Spencer Locke to Play Tarzan and Jane in Motion-Capture Movie
Kellan Lutz
Constantin Film’s Tarzan movie has been quietly been in development but is now entering the casting stage. Kellan Lutz, co-star of the Twilight movies, has signed on to star as the title character and Spencer Locke, perhaps best known for playing K-Mart in Constantin’s Resident Evil movies, has nabbed the role of Jane Porter. The movie will be a performance-capture 3D production. Kellan Lutz Is Tarzan
Minnie Driver, Tony Goldwyn, Wayne Knight, and Rosie O'Donnell in Tarzan (1999)
Like a hardy perennial, Edgar Rice Burroughs’ animal-befriending, vine-swinging, valley-yodelling hero Tarzan just keeps getting re-invented every few years. And now Resident Evil producers Constantin Film think that Twilight’s Kellan Lutz is the top choice to don the loincloth.Actually, Lutz will be spending his time in a performance capture leotard, as the movie, set to be directed by Reinhard Klooss, is going to be CG animated from the cast’s work. And every Tarzan needs his Jane, which explains why actress Spencer Locke (who has cropped up in two Resident Evil movies as K-Mart and will next be seen in Detention) is in talks to play the woman who wins his heart.Klooss (whose name makes him sound like the villain on a kids’ spy show), has been working on this one for a couple of years now. Blu-Ray Review: Third ‘Ice Age’ Sticks to Frigid Formula
Chicago – When did “gentleness” first become “unhip” in children’s films? Practically every studio in America, with the exception of Pixar, feels the need to make their “all ages” entertainment as abrasive, dumb and crude as their escapism targeted at teens and simple-minded adults. The “Shrek” series flourished under this principle, and so does “Ice Age.”

Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0

Yet while DreamWorks has found financial success with multiple franchises (“Shrek,” “Madagascar,” “Kung Fu Panda”), Blue Sky Studios still insists on focusing most of its moviemaking efforts on the decade-old premise of prehistoric creatures riffing through an arctic wasteland.
