New independents from documentary It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley on the rising musician who died too young, to Kristin Scott Thomas’ directorial debut My Mother’s Wedding and quirky animated Boys Go To Jupiter, Cartuna’s first outing as a distributor, made a mark this weekend. The numbers don’t necessarily move the needle on summer box office given the proliferation of big ticket studio fare led by new entrants Weapons and Freakier Friday, but they do show moviegoer interest in a variety of fare.

‘Boys Go to Jupiter’ Review: Alt Comics Voice Disaffected Capitalist Drones in Delightful Indie Toon
Extraterrestrial influencers making social media content about human food, a scientist producing genetically modified fruits and the soul-sucking dangers of capitalist hustle culture all come together in “Boys Go to Jupiter.” Inherently unexpected in the landscape of American independent film, Julian Glander’s idiosyncratic delight is the rare animated feature made outside of this country’s major studios. With his hilariously offbeat, uniquely stylized and surreptitiously profound debut, Glander joins a small but notable list of directors daring enough to try their hand at indie animation in the U.S., joining the ranks of Bill Plympton, Dash Shaw and Don Hertzfeldt.

The upcoming animated film Boys Go to Jupiter has tunnel vision when it comes to being odd, different, and eccentric; you might even call it avant-garde, as it refuses to fit within the box of cinematic norms. The film possesses a winsome awkwardness that’s hard to resist, drawing you in with its enchanting quirkiness.
Along with a fantastic voice cast that includes stars such as Elsie Fisher, Janeane Garofalo, Cole Escola, Julio Torres, and Joe Pera, who help bring out the heart of the story in Boys Go to Jupiter, there is something poignant and, above all, human.

Boys Go to Jupiter, an animated feature directed and written by Pittsburgh-based 3D artist Julian Glander, is truly a product of its time. And that time is now. As the press notes mention: “[The film] was self-produced and animated entirely over 90 days on the free open-source 3D modeling program Blender. Peisin Yang Lazo executive produced.” Running about 85 minutes and featuring an impossibly stellar voice cast, this film is often funny and sometimes introspective about this land of screens we find ourselves trapped inside. A bit long in the tooth at times, it is undeniably engaging and reliably weird.
Billy 5000 (Jack Corbett) is a teenager living in Florida and determined to gig work his way to five-thousand dollars. His main gig is delivering food for the DoorDash-like company Grubster (“Have a Grubby Day!”). He hangs out with his friends around an empty swimming pool and at local chain restaurants surrounded by empty construction spaces.

Julian Glander is a 3D artist whose work ranges from children’s books to video games, and the influence of the former on his feature-length directorial debut, Boys Go to Jupiter, is especially evident in the film’s isometric vision of the world. In the right light, his simple, rounded characters could pass for clay figures. Glander isn’t exactly emulating stop-motion, but the characters’ minute movements evoke it all the same, bringing a hand-crafted quality to a medium that’s typically viewed as impersonal. Every cut to a distant camera perspective asks us to ruminate over every detail that’s gone into composing the film’s scenes.
At a gentle, ambling pace that’s punctuated by dreamy musical numbers, Boys Go to Jupiter follows Billy 5000 (Jack Corbett), a high school dropout and “human calculator.” Billy, who’s growing apart from his friends, lives out of his sister’s garage...

In the lead-up to the season 3 premiere of Prime Video's YA hit The Summer I Turned Pretty, the show's official X account posted a warning to fans about bullying and harassment. The Summer I Turned Pretty's third and final season will reunite viewers with Belly (Lola Tung), Conrad (Christopher Briney), and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno), as Belly's complicated love life is turned upside down one last time.
Many YA romance shows enjoy avid fanbases, as their younger-skewing audiences tend to spend more time on social media, creating reels, discussion posts, and TikTok edits to celebrate their favorite characters and "ships." While many fans simply want to share their enthusiasm online, some have taken to directly harassing and bullying other fans as well as the show's cast and crew throughout seasons 1 and 2.
Anticipating the return of this behavior, The Summer I Turned Pretty's social media accounts reminded fans of what the show is all about.

Before we make our way back to Cousins Beach for the third and final season of hit coming-of-age drama series The Summer I Turned Pretty, Prime Video is making sure that fans are aware of which online behaviors aren't going to be tolerated. Ahead of the season 3 premiere on July 16, the Amazon streamer issued a warning to fans and promised potentially being banned.
On social media on July 14, the official The Summer I Turned Pretty account posted a "PSA for the Summer community" featuring two infographics targeted to viewers who will be engaging in online conversations. The graphics explain that "Cousins is our safe place" and implore fans to "keep the conversation kind this summer." Easier said than done on the internet.

Avid fans of Prime Video’s The Summer I Turned Pretty and Jenny Han’s books upon which the show is based have less than 10 days until Season 3’s premiere on the streamer, and the author and showrunner hinted that certain highly anticipated scenes from the books may play out a little differently than the way she wrote them.
In Han’s words in an interview with People, even the most beloved scenes in her third book We’ll Always Have Summer that fans are most looking forward to “might not always happen in the way that [they]’re expecting.”
Seasons 1 and 2 of the television series underwent their own changes, big ones being the addition of the whole debutante ball in Season 1 as a backdrop and also the addition of Kyra Sedgwick’s Aunt Julia and Elsie Fisher’s Skye in Season 2’s main plot of the Cousins Beach House almost getting sold.

The theatrical trailer for the new indie animated film “Boys Go to Jupiter,” which will hit select theaters in New York City on August 8 and Los Angeles on August 15, has been released. After those initial screenings, it will expand into a limited release nationwide. The movie will be distributed by Cartuna and Irony Point, which picked up the project in May after a successful festival run.

A phrase that Amanda Ogle, the no-nonsense protagonist played by Rose Byrne in Stephanie Laing’s touching film Tow, hears a lot is “people like you.” Strangers reach for it when referring to her situation as an unhoused woman in Seattle, Washington, living in her car. Social services workers — or anyone tasked with helping her — use it to preface their shock at her determination. Passers-by, assuming she is down on her luck, deploy it like a compliment, as if Amanda’s intrepidness in the face of bureaucratic systems and run-of-the-mill social indifference is a testament to her personality rather than a necessary response to state failure.

In October of 2017, an unhoused Seattle woman, living out of her 1991 Toyota Camry containing every possession she had in the world, found her life turned upside down after the car was stolen and then towed. She waged an epic year-long battle to get it back. Now, seven and a half years later, her story has world premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday night as a major motion picture starring Rose Byrne and a supporting cast that includes two Oscar winners—and that unhoused woman named Amanda Ogle is an Executive Producer. This is the stuff that makes you cheer for the little guy and also makes for a feel-good movie that actually gives you hope in an increasingly dire world.

Taylor Sheridan is in the middle of filming the second season of his hit show, Landman, but he may be moving in on the territory of an iconic horror franchise. Deadline reports that Sheridan’s name has “gained steam” as a potential acquirer of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise, which is likely due to his deep roots in the state of Texas. Sheridan would only serve as a producer on a potential project if he ultimately decides to go through with the sale. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise has grossed $247 million from five movies, which might not seem like a lot, but these five movies were collectively produced for less than $50 million. A Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie with a bigger budget — one Sheridan could certainly afford to foot the bill for — could do extraordinary numbers at the box office.

Rose Byrne knew she was fated to bring the story of Amanda Ogle to the screen. Byrne stars in “Tow,” based on Ogle’s story as an unhoused woman fighting to reclaim her car from a predatory towing company after it refuses to return her stolen vehicle.
“Tow” is premiering at Tribeca 2025 on Saturday, June 7. Byrne leads the ensemble cast, which also includes Oscar winners Octavia Spencer and Ariana DeBose, plus Demi Lovato, Elsie Fisher, and “The Holdovers” breakout Dominic Sessa. Stephanie Laing directs from a script written by Brant Boivin and Jonathan Keasey.
“It was so moving and wildly original and timely,” Bryne told IndieWire about first learning about the film. “It is a timely tale right now to tell. I am so proud we are bringing Amanda’s story to audiences. The fall into being unhoused is full of such assumption, prejudice, and ignorance from people. This tells...

Last year, it was reported that The Righteous Gemstones creator Danny McBride had lined up his next series for HBO by way of the Grady Hendrix horror novel The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires. There's been little news on its development since then, and sadly, the project might not happen at all, according to McBride, who says that it's "sort of floating out there right now."
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about his life and career, the subject of the HBO vampire series came up, which is described as "Steel Magnolias meets Dracula." McBride was set to adapt Hendrix's best-selling novel with his Righteous Gemstones partner, Edi Patterson, after the project had previously been in development at Amazon and switched homes after a series of delays. Now it appears as if things have stalled yet again, with McBride noting that HBO has seemingly soured on the idea:...

It’s been a relatively quiet year for A24 so far, but one of the studio’s upcoming films just got an exciting new look. A24 has debuted the first trailer for Sorry, Baby, the upcoming drama starring Eva Victor, who will also make her screenwriting and directorial debut on the film. Sorry, Baby follows Agnes (Victor), a woman who deals with the troubles in her life while watching everyone else go about their daily lives as if nothing is happening. In addition to Victor, Sorry, Baby also stars Naomi Ackie, who opened the year by starring opposite Robert Pattinson in Mickey 17. Sorry, Baby premiered at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and earned a 95% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, including an 8/10 review from Collider’s Ross Bonaime.

When the 98th annual Oscars arrives next year, it will come with the addition of one long-desired new category: an Academy Award for Achievement in Casting. Two years later, the 100th annual Oscars will include its own new category: Achievement in Stunt Design. After that? We’ve got a few ideas for some other additions.
Both the casting and stunt design awards arrive after years of campaigning from artisans, filmmakers, stars, and even the general public. Make a good enough case, it seems, and AMPAS just might grant you an Oscar statuette-sized wish. Still, it does take time: Before the casting award was announced, the ceremony had not added a new award since 2001, when the organization added Best Animated Feature Film.
Last week’s announcement of the new stunt design category inevitably got us wondering: What other categories should the Oscars add? From bringing back an old favorite, cribbing from other awards shows,...

To say Boys Go To Jupiter is visually stunning is an understatement in Julian Glander’s feature debut that is layered with intricate details and an all too familiar story that is a touch psychedelic.
From the offset you are instantly grabbed by the vibrant stylised animation that feels very unique, something different to what we’ve seen in recent years that makes you take notice. The colour palette is striking and reminiscent of how Wes Anderson uses this tool in his movies.
It almost in a way has shades of the claymation of Wallace & Gromit in a world that is realistic yet at the same time something we perhaps see in video games. Billy and his friends Freckles (Grace Kuhlenschmidt), Beatbox (Elsie Fisher) and Peanut (J.R Phillips) look fully realised and not simply bog standard CG on a screen.

Christmas movies are a thing on their own. They tend to be heartwarming dramedies akin to slice-of-life movies that make us emotional but also offer us a sense of warmth and comfort. Centred around the year-end festival, these movies often speak about the spirit of togetherness and are drenched in a cosy, celebratory spirit of the festival. From Frank Capra’s ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ to Alexander Payne’s ‘The Holdovers’, we have seen the festival bringing people together, literally or emotionally. Tyler Taormina’s ‘Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point’ is the latest, charming addition to this list that uses its big ensemble to offer a time capsule to a a bygone era.

The indie distributor’s trailer for “Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point” plays as a full-on throwback to how holiday season comedies used to be advertised, complete with baby boomer doo-wop, a long list of grinning cast members and a warm narrator promising that, “It’s more than a holiday. It’s a gift for the whole family.” But the nostalgic packaging came with an unforeseen side effect.
“A lot of the people online are like, ‘Oh, I thought it was a horror movie.’ It was a very common reaction that was not at all thought of,” Taormina shares. “Earnest nostalgia is not able to be detected. The irony is expected. It bummed me out.”

At the end of Peter Godfrey’s “Christmas in Connecticut” — the greatest Christmas movie of all time (don’t fight me on this) — beloved character actor Sydney Greenstreet, having just emerged from a comedy kerfuffle of epic proportions, can think of nothing more to do than throw his mighty head in the air and declare “What a Christmas! Ho ho, what a Christmas!”
I could also think of little else to say, at first, about Tyler Taormina’s peculiar and lovely “Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point.” What a Christmas indeed. The film is an eclectic hodgepodge of realism and dreamlike, dare I say Lynchian mannerisms. It’s set in the 2000s but it belts wall-to-wall mid-20th century pop hits, like a family-friendly cousin to Kenneth Anger’s “Scorpio Rising.” When Peggy March’s “Wind-Up Doll” drowns out the family playtime, you can half imagine the leathery biker tinkering in the garage.

Box office darling Anora, Sean Baker’s Cannes Palme d’Or winner from Neon, goes wide Friday after a slow platform, expanding to 1,104 screens as indies continue to bust onto screens. Searchlight Pictures’ A Real Pain adds eight locations, with Focus Features’ Conclave and A24’s Heretic continuing, and launching, respectively, in wide release.
A Real Pain starring Kieren Culkin and Jesse Eisenberg, who also wrote and directed, adds theaters in Los Angeles, New York and Toronto after a strong opening last weekend, when it took the third-highest per-theater average of the year. It goes to 900+ theaters across all major markets next week.
Opening in moderate release: Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate’s launch of Artist Equity’s Small Things Like These starring Cillian Murphy at 795 theaters.
Directed by Tim Mielants and written by Enda Walsh, the film is based on the bestselling book of same name by Claire Keegan. It...

It was the day after Halloween, and at The Grove in Los Angeles, Christmas decorations had already been rolled out and strung up. It was fitting for the interview I was about to have with filmmaker and musician Tyler Taormina, who was in between travels for his most recent work, “Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point,” but rather than sit outside and enjoy the ambience, I asked if he’d like to head to Barnes & Noble for the first day of their annual November Criterion Collection sale. Seeing his eyes light up with excitement, I realized I had my answer.
Taormina and I were a few years apart at Emerson College in Boston, and though we’d never met, I found an unmistakable familiarity with him as we started to chat and look through Blu-rays and DVDs. Perhaps it resulted from being shaped at the same institution, or maybe...
