“New Jack Fury” unfolds like a bootleg VHS gem resurrected from late-night cable, drenched in neon hues and pulsing synth. In a fictional urban sprawl dubbed New Jack City, ex-cop Dylan Gamble (Andre Hall) wakes to a shattered career after an on-duty incident gone spectacularly wrong.

When his girlfriend Tanisha (Ally Renee) vanishes, Gamble stages a one-man rescue—only to enlist two unlikely allies: Hendrix Moon (Paul Wheeler), a slick club owner armed with cutting wit, and Leslie Kindall (Dean “Michael Trapson” Morrow), a moonwalking assassin channelling Michael Jackson.

Writer-director Lanfia Wal deliberately leans into green-screen minimalism, stuttering VHS tracking and faux-commercial bumpers to evoke a renegade energy. Clocking in at 84 minutes, this SXSW premiere feels equal parts pastiche and affectionate homage—a parody steeped in the audiovisual trappings of 1980s action-comedy, yet driven by a sincere DIY spirit.

Times are tough in New Jack City. The nefarious Styles Syndicate has a grip on the city, and by-the-book cop Dylan Gamble (Andre Hall) is determined to take down its leader, Silkwaan Styles (Page Kennedy). This year’s SXSW Film Festival, taking place in Austin, TX, has unveiled its lineup this afternoon and it’s another insanely packed year for horror premieres.

While the Midnighter section is dedicated to the genre lovers, SXSW 2025 has filled its Headliner section and beyond with buzzy, highly anticipated titles including Flying Lotus‘s sci-fi horror movie Ash, Christopher Landon‘s ode to Brian De Palma in Drop, and A24’s Death of a Unicorn. Also look for Clown in a Cornfield, the film adaptation of Adam Cesare’s YA slasher novel.

This is, obviously enough, a sequel to the goofy Halloween comedy Boo! A Madea Halloween release just last year. The third weekend in October is starting to become the new home for the most crowded frame of the year. Last year, four new movies opened in wide release (The Last Witch Hunter, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, Rock the Kasbah and Jem and the Holograms, although none could beat The Martian, and two (Rock the Kasbah and Jem and the Holograms) didn't even crack the top 10. This year, four more new movies opened in wide release, Lionsgate's new Madea movie Boo! A Madea Halloween, Paramount's Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Universal's Ouija: Origin of Evil and 20th Century Fox's Keeping Up With the Joneses. While all four new releases did crack the top 10, Boo! A Madea Halloween took the top spot with $27.6 million.

This weekend is shaping up to be the busiest of the year so far at the box office, with four new movies hitting theaters in wide release. At one point, it was even supposed to be five new movies arriving wide, until Focus Features pushed its highly-anticipated A Monster Calls to an awards season friendly date of December 23. Last weekend's winner The Accountant will now square off against Paramount's Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Universal's Ouija: Origin of Evil, 20th Century Fox's Keeping Up With the Joneses and Lionsgate's Boo! A Madea Halloween. We're predicting that the action-packed sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back will come out on top with $20.2 million.

Box Office Mojo reports that Jack Reacher: Never Go Back will debut in approximately 3,500 theaters, the highest roll-out of any other new release, with Ouija: Origins of Evil arriving in 3,100 theaters, Keeping Up With the Joneses debuting in 3,000 theaters and Boo!

One of this fall's strangest movies has to be Boo! A Madea Halloween. Sure, it's part of a long running comedy franchise, but it all started as a joke. And now it's a movie. And on top of that, it's a spoof spoofing other horror movies! Will the madness ever end? Not as long as Tyler Perry is alive. While the filmmaker had originally planned to stop making Madea movies, he just couldn't resist resurrecting the sassy grandma for another adventure, this one taking place on everyone's favorite fall holiday.

Tyler Perry will write, produce, direct and star in "Boo! A Madea Halloween" for Lionsgate with production having just gotten underway in Atlanta ahead of an October 21st release.

Perry and Chris Rock originated the idea as a joke - a fictitious Madea Halloween movie which appeared in Rock's 2014 film "Top Five".

Lionsgate then approached Perry and suggested that they actually make the movie which will be the ninth Madea film since the release of the first - "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" - back in 2005.

Set on Halloween night, Madea will keep a watchful eye on a group of misbehaving teens and must fend off killers, paranormal poltergeists, ghosts, ghouls and zombies while
