Chris Hemsworth, Jacki Weaver, UK casting director Nina Gold, Rachel Perkins, and US actor Alia Shawkat will make up the jury for this year’s Heath Ledger Scholarship.

They join a group of US and Australian casting directors that have been appointed first-round judges, including Jason Wood, Barbara McCarthy, Alyssa Weisberg, John McAlary, Ann Fay, Amanda Mitchell, and Anousha Zarkesh.

Australians in Film has also announced Ledger’s longtime friend and colleague, Gregor Jordan, as a patron of the scholarship, alongside Ledger’s father Kim, scholarship founder Susie Dobson, and casting director Ann Fay.

Jordan will provide professional support and guidance for the recipient during the 12 months of international training and professional development that the scholarship offers in Los Angeles.

Kim Ledger said Jordan’s support for the scholarship and close relationship with his son meant it was “only fitting” the Two Hands director be named as a patron.

Born in Western Australia to Zimbabwean parents, Charmaine Bingwa is the first openly gay and woman of colour to win the $US30,000 Heath Ledger Scholarship presented by Australians in Film.

“I’m stunned; this is an incredible platform,” Bingwa told If after accepting the award from Heath Ledger’s father Kim Ledger today at a dinner attended by eight of the 10 finalists at the Chateau Marmon in Los Angeles.

In her acceptance speech she told how Heath touched her life when she saw Brokeback Mountain. His character’s lines about ‘the pain of a life not lived’ inspired her to come out as a gay woman, she said.

Monday, January 22, marks the 10-year anniversary of Heath Ledger’s death. The 28-year-old actor’s bright, burgeoning career was cut short by an accidental prescription drug overdose, just six months before “The Dark Knight” hit theaters.

Ledger, of course, earned raves for his indelible turn as The Joker in the second film of Christopher Nolan‘s Batman trilogy and would dominate the Best Supporting Actor race the whole season, pulling off a clean sweep of the Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice, Screen Actors Guild, BAFTA and Oscar. Coincidentally, he received his Oscar nomination on the one-year anniversary of his death (he died on Oscar nomination day as well). When he won a month later, his parents, Kim Ledger and Sally Bell, and sister Kate Ledger accepted on his behalf before a tearful crowd, who gave a sustained standing ovation.

After all these years, there is still next to nothing in terms of behind the scenes footage or special features looking at Heath Ledger and the making of The Dark Knight. It’s a shame really, but understandable; being exploitative is not in the nature of Nolan and Company, or Ledger’s family.
