He graduated from the School of Human Sciences at Waseda University.

He is a Japanese actor and former competitive swimmer.

After retiring from competitive swimming, he turned to acting, appearing in many stage productions, including musicals by the Shiki Theatre Company , before moving into television dramas and other film productions.

As a competitive swimmer, he set Japanese records in the 200m and 400m individual medley and competed in two consecutive Olympic Games, becoming the first Japanese to be a finalist in the 400m individual medley at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics .
