Documentaries rarely turn out as originally conceived. They evolve once the cameras roll — unexpected characters may emerge or new facts come to light. It’s in the nature of an unscripted artform.

But in the case of the new film Accepted, that documentary truism reached an extreme. Director Dan Chen and producers Jason Y. Lee and Jesse Einstein thought they were embarking on a film with a predictable narrative when things suddenly and dramatically changed.

“The proverbial shit hit the fan,” says Lee.

The initial concept behind Accepted was to explore Tm Landry, a school in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana with a remarkable track record getting its students — mostly minority kids — into Ivy League or other prestige universities. Excusive: Greenwich Entertainment said Monday that it has acquired North American distribution rights to Accepted, the feature documentary from The Disunited States of America helmer Dan Chen that played at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival.

The pic, from Concordia Studio, Boardwalk Pictures, Diamond Docs and Jubilee Media, will now get a July 1 release date in theaters.

Accepted goes inside the high-stakes quest for elite college admissions and centers on Tm Landry Prep School in Louisiana, which boasted a remarkable 100 college acceptance rate for its ambitious, underprivileged high school students. That was before a New York Times exposé detailing Landry’s methods led the school to buckle under the scrutiny, leaving its students’ fates in limbo.

Deadline bowed a first-look clip of the film ahead of its Tribeca bow last year.

The Bentonville Film Festival (Bff) announced final additions to their programming which includes the world premiere of the Netflix film Good Sam starring Tiya Sircar. The fest, which was co-created by Geena Davis and champions inclusion in all forms of media, has also added spotlight screenings of Gurinder Chadha’s Sundance Springsteen hit Blinded By The Light from New Line Cinema as well as Stx’s animated feature UglyDolls. Now in its fifth year, the festival kicked off May 7 and continues through May 11 in Bentonville, Ark.
