Abraham Lincoln Debates Stephen Douglas in Clip From Fox Nation Documentary ‘Right Makes Might’ (Video)
Abraham Lincoln
Fox News’ streaming service Fox Nation has acquired the rights to the documentary “Right Makes Might” about the debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas, and TheWrap has the first look at a clip from the film ahead of the film’s premiere.

“Right Makes Might: The Lincoln-Douglas Debates” will debut on Fox Nation on Thursday, September 24, and the first clip for the documentary explains how Lincoln’s rhetoric as a debater during the Great Debates of 1858 helped remind voters of their basic humanity and the tenets that the founding fathers had put in place.

“The American people were beginning to lose the language of the founders, they were beginning to lose a way of speaking about themselves as fellow citizens that reminded them of their common purpose, their common humanity and their common possession of individual rights,” Professor Lucas Morel of Washington & Lee says in the clip. “Today, we...

Adam Carolla, Dennis Prager Starrer ‘No Safe Spaces’ Secures Home Video, International Distribution
Image
The Adam Carolla-Dennis Prager starring documentary No Safe Spaces, focusing on the free speech debate and “cancel culture,” secured home video release by Mill Creek Entertainment on Sept. 15 and international release in Latin America by MGM.

The project, directed by Justin Folk and produced by Mark Joseph, lands right in the midst of heated debate over the boundaries of free speech and the extent to which backlash chills discourse. Earlier this week, Bari Weiss, staff editor and writer for The New York Times opinion section, resigned and posted an open letter decrying “constant bullying by colleagues who disagree with my views.” But the issue also has inspired a debate over the debate, as President Donald Trump has seized on “cancel culture” as a campaign rallying cry and others have argued that there is a need for context.

No Safe Spaces got a theatrical release last year and earned $1.3 million air the box office.

Glenn Beck’s The Blaze to End on Linear TV, Digital Properties Will Continue (Report)
Glenn Beck
Glenn Beck-founded media company, The Blaze, is set to shut down its cable channel by the end of 2019, but will maintain its digital properties — including video-on-demand services, website and radio presences — according to The Hollywood Reporter,

THR cited sources who blamed contracts with distributors that prevent some TV to be posted online, which has been detrimental for the digitally-based company.

Representatives for The Blaze did not immediately return requests for comment from TheWrap, but Blaze Media CEO Tyler Cardon is quoted by THR saying, “Yes, we’ve sent notices of non-renewal to our cable partners, whose support we’ve appreciated over the years.

“Given our record growth this year on our direct-to-consumer Svod business, podcasts, various web properties and other digital distribution channels, it has become a conflict to continue programming a traditional,...

Kirsten Dunst-George Clooney Dark Comedy ‘Becoming a God in Central Florida’ Lands at Showtime (Video)
Showtime has acquired the dark comedy “On Becoming a God in Central Florida” which stars Kirsten Dunst, who will also executive produce with George Clooney.

The project has gone back and forth between cable TV and streaming. It was initially set up at AMC, before moving over to YouTube Premium, which placed a 10-episode order last year.

Dunst stars as Krystal Gill, an Orlando water park employee who schemes her way to the top of a pyramid scheme called Founders American Merchandise, which previously bankrupted her. The series will take place in the early 1990s. Along with Dunst, the series stars Théodore Pellerin, Beth Ditto, Mel Rodriguez and Ted Levine.

How ‘Barry’ Star Anthony Carrigan Innovated After the ‘Worst Thing That Could’ve Possibly Happened’
Anthony Carrigan
“Barry” actor Anthony Carrigan says the “worst thing that could’ve possibly happened” to him eventually did happen: He lost all of his hair as a result of alopecia. He feared he could lose his career, his confidence and his way of life, but he turned adversity into his scene-stealing role on the HBO comedy.

“What’s cool is that I would’ve never guessed ever that this thing that I had such shame over would not only be something that I would come to terms with, but it would be the thing that I now love the most about myself,” Carrigan said “You’re missing out on that really wonderful lesson and experience, which is that, when you accept it, the road just opens up for you.”

Carrigan spoke with TheWrap founder and Editor-in-Chief Sharon Waxman as one of 12 individuals featured on TheWrap’s annual Innovator’s List. He...

Pete Buttigieg Calls Out Fox News Hosts Who ‘Uncritically Amplify Hate’
Presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg called out Fox News for allowing voices on the network to “uncritically amplify hate,” but also has explained in a Saturday statement why he is still committed to going through with a town hall on the network that is scheduled for Sunday evening.

“I strongly condemn the voices on Fox and in the media which uncritically amplify hate and the divisive sort of politics which gave rise to this presidency,” Buttigieg said in an email to supporters Saturday. “Their goal is to spread fear and lies, not serve as honest brokers with the American people.”

“But just became many of these opinion hosts don’t operate in good faith, it doesn’t mean there aren’t Fox viewers tuning in in good faith,” he continued. “If we ignore the viewers of Fox News and every news platform that doesn’t share our worldview, we will surrender...

Why Former CNN White House Correspondent Jessica Yellin Chose Instagram Over Another Broadcast Job
Instagram usually isn’t the first app that comes to mind when people think about breaking news coverage. The platform is known more for selfies, memes and lifestyle posts. But where some see an inhabitable environment for thoughtful breaking, former CNN White House correspondent Jessica Yellin sees an untapped audience.

In less than seven months, Yellin says her news-focused Instagram page has attracted more than 125,000 followers, up from just 1,000 in July. Her secret? “Explain the news in a way the viewers understand,” she said — and on a platform they understand.

“I found that during my career, I was constantly on camera having conversations that I thought left the audience out,” said Yellin, who covered the White House for CNN from 2011 to 2014. “It’s like you’ve walked into a conversation 10 minutes after it’s begun in cable news. It’s a lot of jargon.”

Samantha Bee Slammed for Calling Ivanka Trump a ‘Feckless C–t': ‘How Utterly Disgusting!’
Samantha Bee
Samantha Bee is facing heavy criticism for calling Ivanka Trump a “feckless c–t” on “Full Frontal” Wednesday night.

“Let me just say, one mother to another, do something about your dad’s immigration practices you feckless c–t!” Bee said in response to Ivanka not challenging her father’s immigration policies.

“He listens to you. Put on something tight and low cut and tell your father to f–king stop it. Tell him it was an Obama thing and see how it goes,” she added.

The segment was critical of a tweet where Ivanka was photographed holding her 2-year-old son, with Bee calling it “oblivious” given the forced separation of parents and children that the Trump administration was enforcing against undocumented immigrants at the U.S. border.

“Ivanka Trump, who works at the White House,...

Ask the Flying Monkey! (May 20, 2009)
Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey! (Please include your city and state and/or country.)

Q: I was always under the impression that Dom DeLuise, like other 1970s B-level comic figures such as Paul Lynde, Rip Taylor, and Charles Nelson Reilly, was a not-very-closeted gay man. I was surprised, then, that when he died last week, there was no mention of that in any article I saw. I did read that he had a long marriage to a woman and several grown children (certainly not proof of heterosexuality, but nonetheless). Was I just misinformed? -- Thomasina, Alabama

Dom DeLuise

A: You and the Flying Monkey both. I also always simply assumed DeLuise was gay, so I was as surprised as you were to read last week that he’d been married for 44 years and had three children.

That said – and I’m not necessarily saying anything about DeLuise,...
