She trained at Birmingham School of Acting (formerly Birmingham School of Speech & Drama).

She married her fiancé of 20 months Tom Pitfield at Colshaw Hall, Cheshire. Her Coronation Street (1960) co-star and close friend Antony Cotton played a role in the wedding, while past and present colleagues Sue Johnston, Jane Danson, Samia Longchambon, Jack P. Shepherd, Brooke Vincent, Debbie Rush, Paula Lane, Katie McGlynn, and Shayne Ward also attended the ceremony.

Her Coronation Street (1960) character Eva Price became the 32nd woman on the soap opera to give birth when Eva had daughter Susie (played by an unknown baby) on April 30, 2018.

She began a relationship with personal trainer Tom Pitfield in January 2014, getting engaged in August 2014 and marrying in May 2016. They have one son together.
