Reed Lackey

Fantasia 2012: Michael Biehn Refuses to be ‘The Victim’
The Victim

Written by Michael Biehn, based on a story by Reed Lackey

Directed by Michael Biehn

USA 2012 Fantasia imdb

For years, Michael Biehn has been of the most interesting and versatile actors in genre cinema, while paradoxically one of the most misused. Capable of playing the hero, anti-hero or stone cold villain, Biehn has the charism and acting chops of a character actor with the chiseled good lucks of a star. Why this hasn’t translated into Biehn being one of the biggest action heroes of all time is an enduring mystery.

“I’m a working actor, and I’m always working, but there is a difference between a part and a great part. Mickey in The Divide was a great part. Johnny Ringo in Tombstone was a great part, but there is almost a twenty year gap there.”

-Michael Biehn

It is almost a relief to see...

Fantasia 2012: Week one wrap up
We are now a week into the three week long Fantasia Film Festival, and while we admittedly have been a little behind due to some technical issues with our website, we still managed to get a dozen film reviews published. Keep coming back to our site as we promise twice the amount of articles by the end of week two. In the meantime, here is a round-up of what we’ve seen and written about so far.

Black Pond

Directed by Tom Kingsley and Will Sharpe

Written by Will Sharpe

U.K., 2011

Comedy, in its nature and its presentation, has morphed dramatically over the past decade or so, both in North America and in Europe, in particular the United Kingdom. From the more overt, on the nose comedy of yesteryear we have now live in an era in which the comedy is delivered with a completely different version of wit.

Fantasia 2012: Mike Ryan’s Most Anticipated Films
For those that are confused (which would obviously include me) the column that has the url: http://www.soundonsight.org/fantasia-2012-mike-ryans-five-most-anticipated-films/ is actually my column on the five films that I am most upset to be Missing.

This is my column on five seven films that I am most looking forward to:

1) Takashi Miike (For Love’s Sake and Ace Attorney)

For Love’s Sake (2012) Written by Takayuki Takuma, Ikki Kajiwara, Takumi Nagayasu, Directed by Takashi Miike

You really only need three words to sell For Love’s Sake: Takashi. Miike. Musical.

But here are a few more words…

Takashi Miike is beloved by the Fantasia crowd for pushing the boundaries of genre filmmaking in films like Audition, Visitor Q and Ichi the Killer, but I tend to prefer Miike when he is working in a specific sub-genre where he is forced to subvert the conventions at play in more subtle ways,...

The Victim (2011)
Directed by: Michael Biehn

Written by: Michael Biehn

Cast: Michael Biehn, Jennifer Blanc, Danielle Harris, Ryan Honey, Denny Kirkwood

Last week, a suburban Alamo Drafthouse was transformed into a grubby inner-city grindhouse when SplatterFest, Houston's leading horror festival, sponsored a special screening of Michael Biehn's new down-and-dirty revenge thriller, The Victim.

A gutsy throwback to the glory days of 42nd Street, The Victim is a flick that gleefully treads on dirty ground avoided by most modern filmmakers. The film stars Danielle Harris and Jennifer Blanc as Mary and Annie, two party girls who live in a small town plagued by the disappearances of several young women.

During a drug-fueled sexual encounter, Mary is killed by her sleazoid cop boyfriend, Harrison (a fine Ryan Honey), and Annie is sent running for her life. Trying to escape Harrison's buddy, Cooger (Denny Kirkwood), in over his head, Annie discovers the cabin of a reclusive ex-con named Kyle,...

Michael Biehn talks The Victim and Take Me Home Tonight
From James Cameron to Robert Rodriguez, Michael Biehn has been in some great genre films. Terminator. Aliens. The Abyss. Tombstone. Planet Terror. Now, Biehn is directing his first genre film in The Victim, as well as playing Topher Grace’s dad in the 1980s sex comedy, Take Me Home Tonight from Universal. Killer Film catches up with Michael and his new projects. Read on!

Jon: IMDb says you co-directed Blood Bond, so what made you want to get back behind the camera for The Victim?

Michael Biehn: I wouldn’t say I co-directed Blood Bond. What happened was Bey Logan wanted my help on the film he was producing. So I said yes, and flew over to Hong Kong. I think he wanted a “name” to center the film on, but it wasn’t SAG affiliated. When it came to post, I still wasn’t paid, and I didn...

Michael Biehn, Jennifer Blanc-Biehn, and Danielle Harris in The Victim (2011)
Michael Biehn talks low budget with The Victim
Michael Biehn, Jennifer Blanc-Biehn, and Danielle Harris in The Victim (2011)
Who doesn’t love Michael Biehn? He has defined some very iconic roles in genre films, including Corporal Dwayne Hicks (Aliens), Kyle Reese (Terminator), and Lt. Hiram Coffey (The Abyss). Anyone else see a trend there? Nevermind. He almost always plays a soldier or a cop, someone with a gun and a mission, and he always lends an air of authenticity to the role.

As if he had too much time on his hands, he has 7 films coming out next year, Biehn is also directing, writing and starring in his own, The Victim. The film is a low budget, more heart than money, thriller based on a novella by Reed Lackey (who has a part in the film) . The movie is produced by Michael’s wife Jennifer Blanc-Biehn, who is also the co-star. Danielle Harris (who is becoming a horror icon in her own right) helps round out the cast.
