Maya da Costa and Myra Molloy have been cast to star in “Girls Like Girls,” Focus Features’ upcoming LGBT drama from debuting director Hayley Kiyoko based on her 2015 viral music video.

Kiyoko announced the casting on Tuesday morning on Instagram to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the music video’s release.

The music video, which has 159 million views on YouTube, follows a girl named Coley who goes to visit her closest friend Sonya at her house and realizes that their relationship goes deeper than either of them thought. The music video was adapted by Kiyoko into a 2023 novel, with the screenplay for this film written by Kiyoko alongside Stefanie Scott, who played Coley in the original music video.

Marc Platt, Katie McNicol, Adam Siegel, and Dee Best are producing for Marc Platt Productions, Michael Philip and Jason Moring are producing alongside BuzzFeed Studios’ Richard Alan Reid.

Maya da Costa and Myra Molloy have nabbed lead roles in pop star Hayley Kiyoko’s movie Girls Like Girls, based on her 2015 hit song of the same name and viral music video.

The coming-of-age film about a young girl falling for another girl will see da Costa play Coley, who explores her attraction to other women. She’s especially attracted to Sonya (Molloy) as they navigate a summer romance.

A logline from the film’s producers adds: “Based on Kiyoko’s breakthrough hit song and viral music video of the same name, the film tells the universal story of falling in love for the first time and learning to accept yourself along the way.”

da Costa is best known for her recurring role as Maya Longette in Under the Bridge for Hulu, while Thai actress Molloy has credits that include He’s All That, Halfworlds and The Bold Type.

Multi-hyphenate Hayley Kiyoko unveiled on Instagram today that her directorial debut Girls Like Girls at Focus Features will star Maya da Costa (Under The Bridge) and Myra Molloy (He’s All That).

In 2023, Kiyoko released the New York Times Best Selling novel Girls Like Girls, which expanded upon the characters from her music video. In 2019, Billboard included the ditty in its list of the “30 Lesbian Love Songs”.

True crime has been a very popular genre for a while now, so it's not surprising that a genuinely horrifying real-life case — which occurred in Austria and came to light in 2008 — served as inspiration for two (admittedly different) movies. Released in 2021, "Girl in the Basement" stars Stefanie Scott as Sarah Cody, a rebellious teenager who's seeing a boy named Chris (Jake Etheridge) and sneaks out to meet up with him against the wishes of her extraordinarily strict father Don. Hayley Kiyoko will make her directorial debut with an adaptation of her own book (itself based on her hit single), Girls Like Girls.

One of Hayley Kiyoko’s first starring roles was as Velma in a series of straight to DVD Scooby Doo films from 2009 to 2011. She also had a very successful stint on the Disney Channel, appearing in Wizards Of Waverly Place and playing one of the main characters in arguably one of the best Disney Channel Original Movies, Lemonade Mouth, in which she also sang and played guitar. This led to Kiyoko releasing several albums, and that builds us towards this particular story.

One of the most successful singles was Girls Like Girls. The music video went viral in 2015, it depicted a friendship between two girls that developed into romance. She then adapted the story of the song into a young adult novel, which was published in 2023.

Exclusive: Political drama-thriller Words of War, about the life and murder of Russian-American investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya has been sold domestically to Decal Releasing out of the TIFF market.

BAFTA-nominee Maxine Peake, Oscar-nominee Ciarán Hinds and BAFTA-nominee Jason Isaacs star in the film, which is being lined up for a theatrical release in Q1, 2025.

Josef had told his wife, family, and neighbors that Elisabeth had left town and possibly joined a religious cult.

After five years, “Insidious” is taking fans to the Further once more with “Insidious: The Red Door.” The latest installment is now available on Digital, which means now is the perfect time to catch up on the creepy franchise (or experience it for the first time). The Insidious franchise has always had a special place in my little black heart. And I believe it’s because I was so pleasantly surprised at my theater experience with the first film.

Something about that gigantic red Insidious popping on the screen as the violin violently erupted like an A24 score having a panic attack just stuck with me. It was a very Sam Raimi moment and I was enamored with the whole experience. Though the sequels continue to have diminishing scary time returns, I continue to root for and enjoy this horror franchise.

So, without further (Get It?!?! Further? I apologize) ado, here are my top five scariest moments from the entire Insidious franchise… while you wait for Insidious: The Red Door!

The Red Demon Jump Scare – Insidious

Normally I would never include a jump scare as the “scariest” scene in a movie but this particular jump scare happens to have nuance.

The family of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya has said an upcoming film inspired by her life is “grossly inaccurate” and misrepresents her work in a statement sent to journalists Tuesday afternoon.

In the statement, the family said it is “very concerned” by the film’s preliminary script, which they say contains “significant inaccuracies” and misrepresents Anna’s life, work, and family.

The film, previously titled Mother Russia, tells Anna’s story as a world-renowned journalist and human rights activist who went from being a local print journalist to braving the Chechen killing fields and exposing Russian state corruption under Vladimir Putin.

Anna refused to give up reporting on the war in Chechnya despite numerous acts of intimidation and violence, including being poisoned. She was ultimately murdered in the elevator of her block of flats, and it remains unclear who paid for the contract killing.

TV Fanatic got the chance to chat with Sofia Bryant (Tasha), Misha Osherovich (Nolan), Will Yun Lee (Arthur Dean), Reed Diamond (Hosea), and Kylie Lya Page (Sara) about bringing the series to life.

One thing that was evident from the series is that all of the characters get a lot to work with. They feel very well-developed, and the show does not waste a single character.

Reed was ecstatic to work on the show because it had everything his 13-year-old daughter is looking for.

Skull: The Mask: "Rlje Films, a business unit of AMC Networks, has picked up select rights to the horror film Skull: The Mask from Shudder, AMC Networks’ premium streaming service for horror, thriller and the supernatural. Rlje Films will release Skull: The Mask on VOD, Digital HD and DVD on October 26, 2021.

Peacock on Monday dropped the first trailer for its supernatural YA drama about a mysterious door in the woods that leads to a terrifying monster dimension.

It features Carrie a teenage runaway who’s anything but ordinary as she faces her demons and bonds with two new friends, Nolan and Tasha to fight back.

The new drama launches Thursday, October 21, on Peacock. All eight episodes will drop at once, so you can get your binge on.

There have been plenty of horror films set in the Old West and the Old South, as well as eras of religious inquisition in the Old World. “The Last Thing Mary Saw” goes where relatively few have gone before, however, by taking place in the still-new United States’ “civilized” rural East, where an industrial age had yet to penetrate and mores remained none too distant from the earliest European settlers’ harsh Puritanism.

Establishing itself as the most consistent buyers of top titles at Fantasia, Shudder, AMC Networks’ premium streaming service for horror, thriller and the supernatural, has acquired period horror feature “The Last Thing Mary Saw” ahead of its Aug. 15 world premiere at the Canadian genre fest.

Directed by Edoardo Vitaletti, “The Last Thing Mary Saw” will be released by Shudder in the North America, U.K., Ireland, Australia and New Zealand in 2022. The film will celebrate its U.K. premiere on Aug. 28 at London’s Frightfest.

The acquisition deal was negotiated by Emily Gotto and Samuel Zimmerman on behalf of Shudder and by XYZ Films and CAA Media Finance on behalf of the filmmaker.
