Girl in the Basement (2021) is a disturbing psychological thriller that doesn’t hold back when it comes to showing the horrors of abuse, control, and survival. Loosely based on the real-life Fritzl case, the film tells the story of Sarah, a teenage girl whose world turns into a nightmare when her own father locks her in the basement. But beyond the shocking plot, the movie explores how narcissistic men try to control independent women by masking abuse as “protection,” and how systems meant to protect people often fail to see the signs.
In this article, we’ll break down the shocking ending, explore the emotional and psychological weight behind it, and unpack the film’s broader themes of control, survival, and freedom.

“Words of War,” the political thriller executive produced by Sean Penn, will be released in theaters on May 2.
Rolling Pictures and Decal announced the release date along with an official poster. Directed by James Strong, the film is also executive produced by Representative Eric Swalwell (CA-14).
“Words of War” is based on a true story and follows world-renowned journalist and human rights activist Anna Politkovskaya on her brave crusade, fighting to be an independent voice of truth for the Russian people, putting her own life in jeopardy despite numerous acts of intimidation and violence. While Politkovskaya was ultimately silenced, her legacy lives on and her story serves as a reminder of the dangers that journalists face and the importance of protecting their right to report the news, without fear of death or reprisal.

True crime has been a very popular genre for a while now, so it's not surprising that a genuinely horrifying real-life case — which occurred in Austria and came to light in 2008 — served as inspiration for two (admittedly different) movies. So, if you've seen the 2021 Lifetime original film "Girl in the Basement," what is it about ... and how does it connect to real-life events?
Released in 2021, "Girl in the Basement" stars Stefanie Scott as Sarah Cody, a rebellious teenager who's seeing a boy named Chris (Jake Etheridge) and sneaks out to meet up with him against the wishes of her extraordinarily strict father Don. After she returns home, having been out all night, Don does something horrific; he imprisons his own daughter in the soundproofed basement of the Cody family home, unbeknownst to her mother Irene (Joely Fisher) and sister Amy...

Hayley Kiyoko will make her directorial debut with an adaptation of her own book (itself based on her hit single), Girls Like Girls.
One of Hayley Kiyoko’s first starring roles was as Velma in a series of straight to DVD Scooby Doo films from 2009 to 2011. She also had a very successful stint on the Disney Channel, appearing in Wizards Of Waverly Place and playing one of the main characters in arguably one of the best Disney Channel Original Movies, Lemonade Mouth, in which she also sang and played guitar. This led to Kiyoko releasing several albums, and that builds us towards this particular story.
One of the most successful singles was Girls Like Girls. The music video went viral in 2015, it depicted a friendship between two girls that developed into romance. She then adapted the story of the song into a young adult novel, which was published in 2023.

Flipped 2's prospects are uncertain, with no concrete plans for a sequel. A 10-year reunion with the cast occurred, but no sequel was discussed. A Change.org petition suggests a high school setting for Flipped 2, with the original cast returning.
Flipped 2 is the long-hoped-for sequel to Rob Reiner's 2010 movie Flipped; unfortunately, there have been a few discouraging comments made about its prospects. Prolific actor and director Rob Reiner made Flipped for his Castle Rock Entertainment production company. Based on the novel of the same name by author Wendelin Van Draanen, Flipped is a romantic coming-of-age story about two eighth graders who begin developing feelings for one another despite being complete opposites.
The film performed poorly at the box office, earning only $4.3 million (via Box Office Mojo) and reviews were lukewarm, with Flipped only garnering 55% on Rotten Tomatoes. Since its release, however, there's been a groundswell in appreciation for the film.

The "Insidious" franchise shows no signs of stopping. There's both a spin-off movie and a new sequel on the way, and the most recent entry, "The Red Door," was a big hit in 2023. And for the most part, this horror series has remained strong. Not every film works, but the majority of the entries are solid scare-fests full of all sorts of spooky mayhem. The series kicked-off all the way back in 2011 with James Wan's "Insidious," and now here we are all these years later, still waiting for more. With that in mind, why don't we go back through the entire franchise so far and rank the titles, from worst to best? Come along with us into the Further and watch out for jump-scares.

Creating a horror prequel is trickier business than a sequel. The rules are far less rigid in sequels, with expanded body count and lore most often being the primary goals. But a horror movie prequel has the tougher needle to thread in ensuring all of its pieces nestle neatly within the previously established framework without contradicting any details.
This week brings the arrival of The Omen prequel, The First Omen, charting the events leading up to Antichrist Damien Thorn’s adoption. It makes for the perfect excuse to revisit horror prequels that successfully earned their spot in their franchises through unique shifts in setting, tone, and style without veering too far off the beaten path.
This week’s streaming picks highlight horror movie prequels that get weird or dial up the horror in intense ways while further fleshing out familiar characters and storylines.

5lbs of Pressure stars Luke Evans as a recently paroled murderer attempting to reconnect with his lost son. The Lifetime movie Girl in the Basement takes some liberties with the true story of Elisabeth Fritzl, changing names, locations, and adding failed escape attempts for dramatic effect. The addition of a romantic interest for Sarah in the film, Chris, adds unnecessary fluff to a story that should focus on strength and survival, rather than romantic love. The real Elisabeth and her children now live in a secret location under new names, and little is known about their lives today, although reports have surfaced about Elisabeth marrying her bodyguard.

Another spooky season has come and very nearly gone. The leaves are changing colors, the days are getting shorter (and colder), and it's time to start gearing up for the annual end-of-year rush of awards players. Not that that's any reason to stop the scary times from going. If you're like me, you'll probably spend the first part of November just catching up on all the spine-chilling entertainment you had intended to get to in October (there's just too darn much to cram into a single month -- I only barely got started on the new "Goosebumps" series). Of course, if you'd prefer to get a head-start on the winter holidays, you could instead tune in to Max, which will be adding plenty of beloved festive titles over the next few weeks, and much more.
Here are our top picks for November, along with everything else that's coming to the streamer that month.

The Lifetime original "The Girl in the Basement" and A24's "Room" draw from the same harrowing true story. In 2008, a young woman named Elisabeth Fritzl from Amstetten, Lower Austria, escaped the cellar of her family home after being imprisoned for 24 years by her father, Josef Fritzl. During that time, she gave birth to seven of Josef's children — three of whom remained in captivity, one who passed away shortly after childbirth, and three others who were raised by Fritzl and his wife, Rosemarie, as "foundlings" put on their doorstep from their runaway daughter. Josef had told his wife, family, and neighbors that Elisabeth had left town and possibly joined a religious cult.
Elisabeth was able to break free from her underground prison after one of her children became unconscious. Josef took her to the hospital and the doctors were concerned over her poor health conditions. Josef was sentenced to...

After five years, “Insidious” is taking fans to the Further once more with “Insidious: The Red Door.” The latest installment is now available on Digital, which means now is the perfect time to catch up on the creepy franchise (or experience it for the first time). Beginning with “Insidious” in 2010, the horror films center around a family who finds themselves haunted by demons from another realm, along with the people who try to help them.
Created by horror veteran Leigh Whannell (who also created the “Saw” franchise along with James Wan), each installment of the “Insidious” takes viewers deeper into the Further, a nightmarish dimension populated by tortured spirits and ruled over by a malevolent demon. “The Red Door” will be the fifth installment in the franchise, and will once again focus on the Lambert family, with Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, and Ty Simpkins all reprising their roles from the first two films.

The Insidious franchise has always had a special place in my little black heart. And I believe it’s because I was so pleasantly surprised at my theater experience with the first film.
Something about that gigantic red Insidious popping on the screen as the violin violently erupted like an A24 score having a panic attack just stuck with me. It was a very Sam Raimi moment and I was enamored with the whole experience. Though the sequels continue to have diminishing scary time returns, I continue to root for and enjoy this horror franchise.
So, without further (Get It?!?! Further? I apologize) ado, here are my top five scariest moments from the entire Insidious franchise… while you wait for Insidious: The Red Door!
The Red Demon Jump Scare – Insidious
Normally I would never include a jump scare as the “scariest” scene in a movie but this particular jump scare happens to have nuance.

The family of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya has said an upcoming film inspired by her life is “grossly inaccurate” and misrepresents her work in a statement sent to journalists Tuesday afternoon.
In the statement, the family said it is “very concerned” by the film’s preliminary script, which they say contains “significant inaccuracies” and misrepresents Anna’s life, work, and family.
The film, previously titled Mother Russia, tells Anna’s story as a world-renowned journalist and human rights activist who went from being a local print journalist to braving the Chechen killing fields and exposing Russian state corruption under Vladimir Putin.
Anna refused to give up reporting on the war in Chechnya despite numerous acts of intimidation and violence, including being poisoned. She was ultimately murdered in the elevator of her block of flats, and it remains unclear who paid for the contract killing.
BAFTA-nominee Maxine Peake (The Village) plays Anna in the biopic.

Exclusive: Here’s your first look at BAFTA-nominee Maxine Peake (The Village) as the late, fearless Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya in feature Anna.
As we revealed last week, production is underway in Riga, Latvia, on the biopic of the journalist, human rights activist and Putin scourge.
Ciarán Hinds (Belfast), Jason Isaacs (The Death of Stalin), Harry Lawtey (Industry), Ellie Bamber (Willow), and Naomi Battrick (The Postcard Killings) also star. BAFTA-winner James Strong (Broadchurch) directs from a screenplay by Eric Poppen.
Ellen Wander’s Film Bridge International has newly taken over sales duties from Luminosity due to what was described to us as a “change in the film’s financial structure”.

To mark the release of The Last Thing Mary Saw on 19th September, we’ve been given a copy to give away on DVD.
We begin in Southold, New York, 1843, where we meet a young Mary (Stefanie Scott) with blood trickling from behind the blindfold tied around her eyes, as she is interrogated about the events surrounding her grandmother’s mysterious death.
As the story flashes back, we witness Mary, raised in a repressively religious and eerily claustrophobic household, finding fleeting happiness in the arms of Eleanor (Isabelle Fuhrman), the family’s maid. Her family, who believe they are seeing, speaking, and acting on God’s behalf, view the girls’ relationship as an abomination to be dealt with as severely as possible, inflicting brutal punishments.
The couple attempts to carry on in secret, but someone is always watching or listening, and the wages of perceived sin threaten to become death,...

If you’re looking for a fright-filled marathon this weekend, look no further than the Insidious movies.
If you’re a fan of horror movies, then you’ve probably heard of the Insidious franchise. The four films in the series are all connected, and they tell a chilling story of ghosts, demonic possession, and hauntings.
Whether you’re revisiting the Insidious films or watching them for the first time, there are two options for the viewing order: following the exact release dates or allowing the narrative to unfold chronologically.
You can’t go wrong with either option; however, a chronological viewing may be more appealing if you want to learn all prequel backstories before getting involved with the characters. The story of the franchise revolves around the lambert family and Elise Rainier, who help the family try to get away from the evil spirits in the house.

The Girl in the Woods is one of the most exciting TV shows of the year.
The series follows a young woman's escape from a mysterious cult-like colony that guards the world from monsters hidden behind a door in the woods.
TV Fanatic got the chance to chat with Sofia Bryant (Tasha), Misha Osherovich (Nolan), Will Yun Lee (Arthur Dean), Reed Diamond (Hosea), and Kylie Lya Page (Sara) about bringing the series to life.
We also talked with Stefanie Scott, who plays Carrie. Stefanie's full interview is at the bottom of the post in video form.
One thing that was evident from the series is that all of the characters get a lot to work with. They feel very well-developed, and the show does not waste a single character.
Reed was ecstatic to work on the show because it had everything his 13-year-old daughter is looking for.
"She's looking for real compelling horror.

There have been plenty of horror films set in the Old West and the Old South, as well as eras of religious inquisition in the Old World. “The Last Thing Mary Saw” goes where relatively few have gone before, however, by taking place in the still-new United States’ “civilized” rural East, where an industrial age had yet to penetrate and mores remained none too distant from the earliest European settlers’ harsh Puritanism.
Most obviously comparable would be 2015’s sleeper hit “The Witch,” though this first feature by writer-director Edoardo Vitaletti is not as vivid in atmospheric or suspense terms. Still, it’s similarly distinguished by a strong sense of a particular cultural epoch’s comingled faith, fear and oppression, even if “Mary” is set more than 200 years later. Perhaps more rewarding in the end as straight, downbeat period drama than as an occult thriller, it was acquired by genre platform...

The Last Thing Mary Saw begins with an ominous quote from John Calvin, “All events whatsoever are governed by the secret counsel of God.” And God, or a twisted interpretation of His words, will have a large part to play in the events that unfold before us.
It’s December 3rd 1843 in Southold, New York. A young woman, Mary, is being interrogated about a series of deaths at her family home. A blindfold covers the two empty sockets where her eyes used to be so she doesn’t see the rifles aimed at her as she tells her story.
Mary is the daughter of a wealthy family. It’s also a repressively devout one and her life has little joy apart from her relationship with her maid Eleanor. A relationship that brings disapproval and harsh punishment from her family,...

In a film landscape that is oversaturated with a lot of the “same ole, same ole,” it’s easy to be dismayed or overly critical of films that walk a well-worn path. Features like The Last Thing Mary Saw serve as a needed reminder that tropes are used often for a reason and that even familiar stories can have fresh perspectives. It’s all about the quality of the work and, in that respect, The Last Thing Mary Saw delivers.

When we look back at the past we are often reminded that we need to appreciate the different perspectives people would have had then, but important though that is, it can be misleading. All too often it causes us to distance ourselves emotionally from those people, to think of them as other, and to associate them with particular sets of conservative values when the truth is that people varied in their thinking at all points in history. Set in a small New York town in 1843, The Last Thing Mary Saw, which premiered at this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival, tells the story of a young woman whose intense feelings for her housemaid cause her to doubt the truth of the strict Christian doctrines under which she has been raised, and to uncover different philosophies even within her own household.
It begins with Mary (Stefanie Scott) telling her story to.
