How Duki Got Wiz Khalifa and Arcangel on ‘Ameri’ — and Why He’s Not Letting Fame Get to Him
Image
Ameri, the new album by the Argentine rapper Duki, has been years in the making. Technically, it’s a world that opened up for him when he was recording his last project, 2023’s Antes de Ameri, an LP that pivoted away from the massively commercial path he’d been on since he burst onto the scene as a battle rapper and champion freestyle from the streets of Buenos Aires.

As he rose to stardom, Duki had landed massive hits alongside other Argentine stars like Nicki Nicole, Bizarrap, and Tini. But the bigger he got,...

The Latin Grammys Turn 25 — and Hold Tight to Tradition
Image
Happy silver anniversary to the Latin Grammys! After the Spanish bombast of the 2023 celebration in Sevilla, the Latin Grammys celebrated its 25th year on Thursday night at the Kaseya Center in Miami. Were Latin music’s biggest night a person, she would be old enough to rent a car (sans the young-driver tax) and cruise down Collins Avenue with her messiest and most glamorous girlfriends.

She’d never get that messy, though. The Person of the Year honoree Carlos Vives opened the show with a regal power stance, and blazed...

Shakira Preps For ‘Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran’ Concert Tour – Dates & Ticket Info
Image
The schedule for Shakira’s 2024 Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran tour begins on November 2 with back-to-back shows in Palm Desert, California, and concludes on December 15 in Detroit, Michigan.

Known by her musical moniker Shakira, Isabel Mebarak Ripoll is a Colombian singer and songwriter who was born and raised in Barranquilla. She made her recording debut with Sony Music Colombia at the age of 13, and has long been praised for her musical versatility and referred to as the “Queen of Latin Music.”

Shakira surprised fans on April 12, the first night of Coachella, when she appeared on stage alongside Bizarrap to perform a rendition of “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53.” The Latin superstar’s appearance left fans ecstatic, and in response to her fans’ high demands, Shakira announced on April 17 that she added extra dates to her tour.

Milo J Samples an Argentine Legend and Honors the Bus He’d Ride to the Studio on ‘166’
Image
The first and last thing you hear on Milo J’s new album 166 is Argentine musical icon Charly García.

The album opens with the father of Argentinian rock declaring, “We need to prohibit autotune. Thank you very much,” sampled from comments he made at the 2018 Gardel Awards. The cameo comes just after the track “Rock Star,” an autotune-filled cut that features Milo’s fellow rapper Duki. García’s words playfully contrast the sound of the LP, which uses autotune as an instrument throughout.

“It’s like ‘See where autotune brought...

La Velada is back: Ibai’s record-breaking influencer boxing event is returning in July
Image
On July 13, fans are expected to fill up Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, the 80,000-seat home of soccer club Real Madrid. On that night, the venue’s typical tenants won’t be taking the pitch. Instead, the Bernabéu will play host to La Velada del Año IV, the latest installment of the world’s most prominent influencer boxing event.

The previous three iterations of La Velada del Año (which translates to “the night of the year”) were organized by Ibai Llanos, a Spanish streaming star who counts more than 15 million followers on his namesake Twitch channel. Ibai is returning to put on the fourth go-around of his influencer boxing spectacular, and this edition of the event is getting an upgrade. After La Velada III drew 70,000 fans to Madrid’s Civitas Metropolitano stadium, Ibai is taking the proceedings across town to a legendary sports venue.

The move to the Bernabéu makes sense, given...

From Scathing Lyrics to Casio Watches: A Timeline of Shakira and Gerard Piqué’s Separation
Image
Call it the battle of Shakira and Gerard Piqué. The cheating allegations, the viral songs, the cryptic Instagram posts — the Colombian pop star and the retired Fc Barcelona player have been making headlines for months as their messy separation plays out in public.

The couple famously met back in 2010 on the set of “Waka Waka,” the song Shakira wrote for the FIFA World Cup that year (Piqué appears in the video.) The two made their relationship official some time later. They had their first son Milan in January 2013 and their...

Nathy Peluso Followed Her Instincts — And Advice From Fito Páez — to Make Her Most Revealing Album
Image
Grasa, the second album by 29-year-old Argentine singer and rapper Nathy Peluso, kicks off with “Corleone,” a sumptuous, old-fashioned bolero. A snippet of John Barry’s dreamy 007 theme “From Russia With Love” morphs into the kind of feverish groove that would have made La Lupe proud. “This ambition is killing me,” sings Peluso, her booming voice in full bloom.

“Corleone” is a somewhat disorienting opening track. Like most of Peluso’s music, it’s both edgy and comfortingly familiar; honest to the core, but with a thin layer of irony underneath.

J Balvin Gets Abducted by Aliens, Doja Cat Gyrates in Mud at Coachella Day Three
Image
Coachella 2024 was the year of the A-list guests. Across all three days, top stars made appearances either onstage or in the crowd to support their musician besties. Olivia Rodrigo joined No Doubt, Will Smith pulled up for J Balvin, Justin Bieber sang with Tems, Billie Eilish threw a last-minute party at the DoLab stage, and Shakira even announced a world tour during Bizarrap’s set.

The talk among some festivalgoers ahead of Coachella suggested that this year’s lineup might underwhelm, but the number of stars joining their friends onstage surely helped with that.

Kesha Joins Reneé Rapp At Coachella & Changes ‘Tik Tok’ Lyric To ‘F*** P. Diddy’
Image
Reneé Rapp debuted at Coachella on Sunday afternoon and was joined by Kesha on the stage.

Kesha performed her song “Tik Tok” and made a slight change to the lyrics.

Instead of singing, “Wake up in the morning feelin’ like P. Diddy,” Kesha and Rapp sang, “Wake up in the morning like F*** P. Diddy.”

The change in the lyric comes as Sean Combs faces sexual assault allegations and is accused of sex trafficking.

Rapp took the stage at the Outdoor Theatre at the Music and Arts festival, where she had kind words to say about Kesha.

“Ladies and gentlemen, this, I think, is the hottest person on the earth. Everybody put your fucking hands together for Kesha,” Rapp said, introducing her colleague.

Rapp is a fan of The L Word, and the cast, including Katherine Moennig, Leisha Hailey, Jennifer Beals, and Ilene Chaiken, were at the event to help...

Shakira's New Album "Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran" Turns Tears Into Diamonds
Image
When life gives you lemons, you have to make lemonade - and that's exactly what Shakira did after heartbreak. When the Colombian pop star learned in 2022 that Gerard Piqué, her partner of 11 years and the father of her two sons, was cheating on her, I'm sure it felt as if her life was falling apart. But when she couldn't bear the pain and the betrayal, she did what most musicians do - she turned it into art.

The first song Shakira released that was directly related to the breakup was 2022's "Te Felicito" with Puerto Rican Latin trap artist Rauw Alejandro. The song not only marked Shakira's comeback, it was also the first in a string of singles that would display her healing journey to the world and eventually become part of her latest highly anticipated album, "Las Mujeres Ya no Lloran," which was released on March 22.

Shakira Comes Back Swinging With ‘Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran’

Since 2022, Shakira’s personal life has publicly unfolded like an engrossing telenovela that just won’t resolve. The saga began in June of that year, when the Grammy-winning Colombian superstar announced the end of her 11-year romance with the Catalan soccer player, and father of her two children, Gerard Piqué. Despite taking a civil tone in a press release issued that summer, she came firing back in 2023 with a tabloid-ready diss track, detailing their breakup (and Piqué’s infidelity) in excruciating detail: the electro-pop atomic bomb “Bzrp Music Sessions #53,”recorded...

More Latin Songs Reached Number One On Spotify Than Ever This Year
Image
The Latin music industry has seen massive growth over the last year. In 2022, revenue for these genres exceeded $1 billion for the first time, and it’s continued outpacing other parts of the industry. And Latin music has remained a force on streaming — so much that 2023 seems to be the biggest year for number one Latin hits on Spotify.

Eight songs made the number one spot on the platform’s global charts, the most in Spotify history. Of the 10 most-streamed artists globally, four were Latino. Bad Bunny occupied the highest spot at number two,...

On the list of most-streamed artists, Swift, Bad Bunny,...

Taylor Swift Surprise-Releases “You’re Losing Me” As Thank You For Being Spotify’s Top 2023 Global Artist; Joe Rogan Tops Podcast Lists
Image
Taylor Swift is celebrating her newfound status as Spotify’s Global Top Artist with a surprise of her own: The massively popular singer-songwriter has just officially released the previously hard-to-find fan favorite song “You’re Losing Me.”

The song, now widely available on streaming services, is the latest of Swift’s “from the vault” releases – tracks that didn’t make her official studio albums. “You’re Losing Me,” which Swift co-wrote with producer Jack Antonoff, was initially released last May only on the “Late Night Edition” CD of Swift’s 2022 album Midnights and in a digital version exclusively at her web store.

This morning, Swift posted on X/Twitter, “Um ok this is unreal?? I just wanted to say to anyone who listened to my music this year, anywhere in the world, thank you. Getting named Spotify’s Global Top Artist in 2023 is truly the best birthday/holiday gift you could’ve given me.

Women Ruled the 2023 Latin Grammys
Image
There was plenty of uncertainty surrounding the Latin Grammys this year. For the first time, the award show was planned in Sevilla, Spain, a cross-continental move that sparked plenty of debate.

The European country has had a complicated place with the awards show, and prior to the ceremony, fans pointed out it’s not part of Latin America — though the Latin Grammys have always considered all music, as long as it’s 51 percent in Spanish. Still, others worried that hosting the show across the world would cause logistical issues for...

It was Karol G’s big night, as the singer took home the Latin Grammy for Album of the Year for “Mañana Será Bonito.” She joked from the stage about how much she loves to talk, but in moments like these, she finds herself speechless.

“Es demasiado chimba,” she said of winning the award, which translates to, “It’s very cool.” Karol G added that the album changed her life and she’s happy it changed a...
