The New Movie That Gets the Look of the 1960s Right: Embrace the Ektachrome
Image
Every film tries to create a visual language that helps us understand and connect to its characters. But director Ami Canaan Mann wanted to take a much more detailed and systematic approach to “Audrey’s Children,” a new biopic released on March 28 about the pioneering medical work of Dr. Audrey Evans (Natalie Dormer). Mann wanted the look of the film to be born out of Evans’ rich interior life.

“I feel like it was an opportunity to have a performance-platformed biopic about a really extraordinary woman where, essentially, it’s a story about watching her think and solve problems,” Canaan Mann told IndieWire on an episode of the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “It happens to be couched in something [a hospital drama] that I guess could be considered a genre, but what if the world of the movie was as visually specific as the woman herself?”

Mann’s ideas call for an impressive level of specificity,...

'Audrey's Children' Review: A Brilliant Medical Drama
Image
Millions of pediatric cancer patients have survived Neuroblastoma, a disease that previously had a 90% fatality rate, because of pivotal medical breakthroughs from a fearless, headstrong woman who refused to be ignored in the face of appalling sexism and misogyny. British doctor Audrey Evans started working in 1969 as the Chief of Pediatric Oncology at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (Chop). She would transform medical science and become an instrumental figure in establishing the Ronald McDonald House, a renowned global charity that has helped impoverished families for decades. Audrey's Children tells her heroic and remarkable story with sophistication, heartfelt realism, and an unwavering lack of melodrama.

Director Ami Canaan Mann opens the narrative with archival footage of Audrey's mentor, Dr. Sidney Farber, a pediatric pathologist who pioneered the use of chemotherapy. Farber states in no uncertain terms the difficulties in treating cancer, but believed that a cure was within reach. We then...

Amy Schumer Snuck A Thoughtful Examination of Motherhood Into An Adam Sandler-Produced Comedy
Image
Comedy filmmakers love a big lie. From Fargo to Tootsie to Overboard to Mrs. Doubtfire, the genre is packed with stories about a beleaguered protagonist coming up with an outlandish claim that quickly grows beyond their control. So Kinda Pregnant, out today on Netflix, is joining a long tradition: Lainy (Amy Schumer) is mistaken for a pregnant woman, decides to run with it, then makes a new friend and has to keep up the ruse. Schumer, who co-wrote the screenplay, is known for her joke-dense stand-up sets and for sexually frank movies like Trainwreck. The film has been released under Adam Sandler’s banner, Happy Madison, home of such past hits as, well, Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison. So when you hear that Sandler and Schumer have teamed up on a comedy about pregnancy, you might get a particular picture of what it’s going to be like. But here...

‘Scrap’ Review: An Astute Tale of a Slipping-Down Life Amid Problematic Family Dynamics
Image
The well-acted, confidently crafted indie “Scrap” probes messy family dynamics with low-key but taut acuity, avoiding the usual poles of dysfunctional-clan comedy or high drama driven by yelling matches and shocking revelations. Since premiering at the 2022 Deauville Film Festival, American writer-director Vivian Kerr’s debut feature has been kicking around the festival circuit for more than two years, in which time she’s completed a sophomore effort (period thriller “Seance”). Though she plays the leading role in both, this is no vanity project, her own character being perhaps the least sympathetic among several awkwardly interlocked lives in Los Angeles. Kerr is self-distributing this credible depiction of “hidden” homelessness and problematic sibling dependencies, which hits on-demand platforms Dec. 13.

Beth (Kerr) is introduced waking up in what turns out to be her SUV, parked on a residential street in the kind of middle- to upper-class neighborhood she doubtless thinks she belongs in — or did,...

This Upcoming Sci-Fi Horror Movie Sounds Like A Dark Twist To A $198.5M Adam Sandler Comedy
Image
The upcoming sci-fi horror movie Affection has found its leads, and the first details about its story make it sound like a darker version of a popular Adam Sandler rom-com. The horror genre continues to go through a great run with sequels, adaptations of other works, and original stories, and the branch of sci-fi horror has been especially popular recently. Movies like M3GAN have reignited interest in sci-fi horror, and there are some exciting movies in development from this branch of horror, among them Affection.

Affection is a sci-fi horror movie directed by BT Meza in his feature directorial debut. Affection is currently in development, but it already has its main cast. As reported by Deadline, starring in Affection are Jessica Rothe, Joseph Cross, and Julianna Layne, and from the plot details given in the report, family drama will be at the center. However, Affection sounds strangely similar to...

Happy Death Day star Jessica Rothe to star in another sci-fi horror film
Image
Scream queen Jessica Rothe has joined the cast of a new sci-fi horror movie, Affection, one with a plot vaguely reminiscent of her breakout role in the time loop slasher series Happy Death Day.

Deadline reports that the actress is playing the role of Ellie, who becomes trapped inside a "cyclical nightmare" that causes her memories to frequently "reset," erasing her life with her husband and daughter. Even worse, her real memories are replaced with "vivid memories of a life she's never lived."

In some ways, it sounds like a cross between a lighter rom-com like 50 First Dates and Happy Death Day. It's not quite the same thing as a time manipulation movie where each day repeats itself, but one that could be a lot darker depending on what direction this story takes.

Rothe will star opposite Joseph Cross, the actor best known for his performances in Lincoln and Licorice Pizza.

Jessica Rothe Starring in Sci-fi Horror Movie ‘Affection’
Jessica Rothe
A fan favorite here in the horror world, Happy Death Day lead Jessica Rothe will continue to hang around in the genre with the upcoming Affection, a science fiction horror movie.

Deadline reports that Jessica Rothe will star alongside Joseph Cross (Lincoln) and Julianna Layne (Prodigal Son) in Affection, which marks the feature debut of director BT Meza.

“The film follows Ellie (Rothe), who is stuck in a cyclical nightmare…

“Grappling with a condition that erratically resets her memory, she’s left unable to remember her husband (Cross) or daughter (Julianna Layne). Each reset leaves her disoriented and haunted with vivid memories of a life she’s never lived.”

BT Meza also wrote the screenplay for the “dark sci-fi horror film.”

Jessica Rothe and Joseph Cross become trapped in a cyclical nightmare in the upcoming sci-fi horror thriller Affection
Image
Becoming trapped in a nightmare is the worst. I’m reasonably adept at controlling my dreams, but now and again, the slumber is too strong to shake the dark visions from my mind’s eye. Jessica Rother and Joseph Cross are about to find out what that’s all about when they star in BT Meza’s directorial debut for the sci-fi thriller Affection. Julianna Layne co-stars.

Meza directs Affection from his script. According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Affection tells the story of “Ellie (Rothe), who is stuck in a cyclical nightmare. Grappling with a condition that erratically resets her memory, she’s left unable to remember her husband (Cross) or daughter (Julianna Layne). Each reset leaves her disoriented and haunted with vivid memories of a life she’s never lived.”

Horror fans know Jessica Rothe as Tree Gelbman Christopher Landon’s Happy Death Day and Happy Death Day 2 U.

With Scrap, Filmmaker Vivian Kerr Creates an Adult Coming-of-Age Film with Sibling Themes
Image
Writer/director Vivian Kerr accomplishes something daring in her directorial debut Scrap by combining two very different but equally compelling subject matters: Challenging sibling relationships and the beginning stages of homelessness. The indie film, currently making the rounds at film festivals, has won praise for its timely story and solid acting.

Kerr also stars in the movie, playing Beth, a woman who has recently been laid off and struggles to maintain the appearance of a successful middle-class lifestyle. Desperate to land a new job and change her situation, she soon finds herself butting up against her estranged older brother Ben (Anthony Rapp of Star Trek: Discovery), who discovers her dilemma. And so begins a unique adult coming-of-age tale about mending broken ties and moving forward amidst great uncertainty.

Scrap is a character-driven drama that has won high marks for its strong cast, emotional depth, and the way it captures real-life issues.

2023 Emmy nominations ballot: See all 61 Best TV Movie contenders from ‘Adult Swim Yule Log’ to ‘White Men Can’t Jump’
Image
The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, a whopping 61 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 12. Last year, there were only 48 options, compared to 41 in 2021 and 28 in 2020.

All 20,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 26 to cast their 2023 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite TV movies. A new rule change will require each voter to make no more than five selections in this category, whereas there was previously no limit. As opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

Just like on the limited series ballot,...

A Christmas Story Christmas Western Scene Callbacks Explained By Ralph Actor
Image
Ralphie actor Peter Billingsley explains western sequence callbacks in A Christmas Story Christmas. Officially titled A Christmas Story Christmas, the sequel to 1983's holiday classic sees Billingsley return to the screen nearly 40 years later as the beloved Ralphie Clark. Set in the 1940s and starring Melinda Dillon and Darren McGavin as Ralphie's parents, A Christmas Story follows the mischievous 9-year-old as he tries to convince them and Santa Claus that the perfect gift for Christmas is a Red Ryder Range 200 Shot Bb gun. Hoping to be a real cowboy someday, Ralphie often fantasizes about himself in western movies, dreaming of protecting his family, "Black Bart." As it turns out, the sequel includes a new sequence, showing an updated version of the classic 40s western.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, A Christmas Story sequel's western sequence callbacks are explained by Ralphie actor Peter Billingsley. Billingsley, who also serves as a producer on the film,...

How Old Is Ralphie Parker In A Christmas Story Christmas?
Image
Ralphie Parker is all grown up in A Christmas Story Christmas, and here is how old Peter Billingsley's character is in the A Christmas Story 2022 sequel. It's been nearly 40 years since audiences have seen Peter Billingsley's Ralphie in a new Christmas adventure. A Christmas Story Christmas continues his story now that he is an adult with a family of his own. The gap between A Christmas Story and its 2022 sequel resulted in Ralphie being much older in the new movie than he was before.

It is confirmed that A Christmas Story Christmas takes place in 1973. Considering the original movie took place in either 1939 or 1940 according to what the film presents, Billingsley's character is either 33 or 34 years older now. The first movie revolved around Christmas when his character was nine years old. That means Ralphie Parker is either 42 or 43 in A Christmas Story's 2022 sequel. This means he is quite...

The family comedy A Christmas Story Christmas checks back in with a Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley) that’s all grown up and a dad himself, to both a daughter (Julianna Layne) and son (River Drosche). With a super supportive wife (Erinn Hayes) who’s pushing Ralphie to follow his dreams, even if they don’t always succeed, the family returns to Ralphie’s childhood home from the 1983 original holiday favorite A Christmas Story to celebrate the holidays together and reminisce about old times with familiar faces.

A Christmas Story Christmas Cast & Character Guide
Image
Peter Billingsley returns to lead the A Christmas Story Christmas cast, which is filled with returning characters and new faces. The original A Christmas Story was released in 1983 and followed Ralphie Parker as he attempted to get a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle from Santa. The film quickly became an iconic Christmas movie, but Warner Bros. found a way to return to the characters decades later with A Christmas Story Christmas. The sequel provides a glimpse at Ralph's life as an adult as he learns about the difficulties that can come with trying to pull off the perfect Christmas.

The A Christmas Story sequel cast unsurprisingly features a mixture of actors that audiences know from the original movie and several new additions. Since it has been nearly 40 years since the original movie, not every person could return. The passing of Darren McGavin, who played Ralphie's Old Man,...

‘A Christmas Story Christmas’ Review: Ralphie Returns in a Forgettable but Sweet Sequel
Image
Click here to read the full article.

It’s hard to imagine now, but A Christmas Story wasn’t exactly a hit when it opened in theaters in 1983. It’s mainly due to the film’s constant rotation on cable television during the holiday season that it achieved its current status as a beloved Yuletide classic. So it makes perfect sense in the current streaming era that its long-belated, awkwardly titled sequel A Christmas Story Christmas should make its debut on HBO Max. (Yes, there was 1994’s My Summer Story and 2012’s direct-to-video sequel A Christmas Story 2. But this film ignores them, and so should you.)

Taking place in 1973, more than thirty years after the original, the film once again stars the now middle-aged Peter Billingsley as Ralphie Parker, who’s all grown up and lives in Chicago with his wife Sandy (Erinn Hayes) and young kids Mark (River Drosche...

A Christmas Story Christmas Review
Image
Plot: Follows the now-adult Ralphie as he returns to the house on Cleveland Street to give his kids a magical Christmas like the one he had as a child, reconnecting with childhood friends and reconciling the passing of his Old Man.

Review: Bob Clark’s A Christmas Story has gone from an obscure 1980s cult classic to a stalwart of cable marathons and quotable moments in the thirty-nine years since it premiered. Despite two feature film sequels, a half dozen made-for-television movies featuring the Parker family, and much despised live broadcast musical special, nothing has lived up to the nostalgia and wholesomeness of the original. With HBO Max serving as the perfect platform for such a sequel, Ralphie Parker is back for the first direct sequel to the 1983 original. A Christmas Story Christmas, featuring the return of Peter Billingsley as Ralphie and many of the first movie’s cast, is...

A Christmas Story Christmas Review: The Holiday Classic's Magic Can't Be Replicated, But It's The Thought That Counts
Image
It's been almost 40 years since the holiday classic "A Christmas Story" followed young Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley) as he pined for the ultimate Christmas gift back in the glory days of the 1940s: an official Red Ryder, carbine action, 200-shot, range model air rifle with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time. The original 1983 holiday comedy has become a fierce favorite around the holidays, so much so that it's earned a now-traditional 24-hour marathon every single year, stretching from Christmas Eve into Christmas Day.

Now Peter Billingsley has returned for "A Christmas Story Christmas," which seeks to give fans a legacy-quel that follows an adult Ralphie as he attempts to give his own family a Christmas they'll never forget. Not only is Billingsley back as Ralphie in front of the camera, with his brilliant and occasionally mischievous blue eyes still shining bright behind rounded spectacles, but...

‘A Christmas Story Christmas’ Review: Peter Billingsley Is Now the Dad in a Mild and Toasty Sequel to ‘A Christmas Story’
Image
Peter Billingsley, the blond moppet from “A Christmas Story,” was 11 years old when he starred in that 1983 holiday-sleeper-that-became-a-classic (though it depends who you ask — I’ve always been something of a Scrooge about it). The image of Billingsley from “A Christmas Story” — goggle-ish glasses, beaming gopher grin — became, in its way, as iconic a movie signifier of raucous kiddie-culture spirits as Macaulay Culkin’s cheeky gaze of frozen horror in “Home Alone.” But that was 40 years ago. Billingsley is now 51, and he’s the dad in “A Christmas Story Christmas,” a latter-day sequel to the movie that a lot of people (maybe too many) think of as their all-time favorite Yuletide TV bliss-out.

In “A Christmas Story Christmas,” Billingsley, as the grown-up version of Ralphie Parker, is still a likable actor, but he’s lost any trace of that rascally Bb-gun exuberance. He now resembles the former NBC News anchor...

‘A Christmas Story Christmas’ Review: Another Forgettable Entry in the Holiday Sequel Annals
Image
When Bob Clark’s “A Christmas Story” hit theaters the week before Thanksgiving 1983, no one could have foreseen the cultural impact the family comedy would have on the holiday film canon. A modest box office showing (it took in 2 million its first week and failed to crack 20 million during its full run), mixed reviews, and some awards attention from Canada’s Genie Awards added up to a hazy picture of a film that was good enough but hardly a game-changer. Later, of course, came the television airings, landing the film in near-constant rotation during the holiday season and turning it into an unexpected holiday favorite. Familiarity, it seems, didn’t breed contempt when it came to this TNT and TBS staple; it only inspired outright adoration.

Nearly 40 years after the film’s initial release — and just in time to capitalize on those same TV showings that will carry it through...

Peter Billingsley, Melinda Dillon, Jeff Gillen, and Darren McGavin in Uma História de Natal (1983)
‘A Christmas Story Christmas’ Review: Ralphie’s Return Mixes New Holiday Gags With Labored Fan Service
Peter Billingsley, Melinda Dillon, Jeff Gillen, and Darren McGavin in Uma História de Natal (1983)
Because 1983’s “A Christmas Story” has achieved iconic status among holiday movies and has become a nostalgic cornerstone to millions of fans who revisit it every December, it’s easy to forget that the film’s initial success came from its skewering of nostalgia itself.

The original tagline ironically called the film “A Tribute to the Original, Traditional, One-Hundred-Percent, Red-Blooded, Two-Fisted, All-American Christmas,” and director Bob Clark’s adaptation of Jean Shepherd’s comic reminiscences struck a chord precisely because it revealed the greed, venality, occasional cruelty, and recognizably human behavior that lurked beneath the Norman Rockwell façade of hazy Yuletide memories.

After several unsuccessful attempts to craft a sequel to Clark’s film, we finally get “A Christmas Story Christmas,” which brings back several of the original movie’s cast members. While it spends perhaps too much of its running time either recreating or directly quoting moments from its 1983 predecessor,...

Christmas Story 2 Video Shows Sequel's New Triple Dog Dare Scene
Image
The first clip from HBO Max's upcoming A Christmas Story sequel shows the first look at its triple dog dare scene. Titled A Christmas Story Christmas, the sequel will see Peter Billingsley reprise his role as Ralphie Parker, who returns to his childhood home with his wife (Erinn Hayes) and two children (River Drosche and Julianna Layne). The film is also planned to be a legacy sequel to the original A Christmas Story, which will re-tread many sequences that made the first film so special and reunite the original cast with some newer additions.

Now, HBO Max has released the sequel's first exclusive clip, in which Flick (Scott Schwartz) triple dog dares Schwartz (R.D. Robb) into sliding down on an icy, and closed-down waterslide. In the original film, Schwartz triple dog dared Flick on sticking his tongue on a frozen flagpole, which inevitably saw him getting his tongue stuck,...

A Christmas Story‘s Flick is finally getting his payback, 39 years after Schwartz triple dog dared him to stick his tongue to the school flagpole.

In a newly released clip from HBO Max’s forthcoming movie A Christmas Story Christmas, it’s Flick who triple dog dares Schwartz to take a sled and make his way down what appears to be an abandoned (and extremely icy) waterpark slide. As Schwartz contemplates whether or not to risk his life for the sake of the dare, Flick, standing beside Ralphie and Ralphie’s son Mark, eggs him on from below.

A Christmas Story Christmas Trailer Is Here, But Be Careful Not To Shoot Your Eye Out!
Image
Streaming on HBO Max November 17 is A Christmas Story Christmas.

From Warner Bros. Pictures and HBO Max comes the long-awaited follow-up to annual holiday favorite, “A Christmas Story.” This time, Ralphie is all grown up and must deal with Christmas and all that comes with it…as a dad. Peter Billingsley returns to the role that has made kids of all ages anticipate Christmas morning like no other.

In the original 1983 film, set in the 1940s and showed annually for 24 hours on TBS & TNT, little Ralphie tries to convince his parents to get him a Red Ryder range-model Bb gun for Christmas, only to hear, “You’ll shoot your eye out, kid.” TNT began the Christmas Story marathon in 1997, and TBS took it over in 2004 when TNT shifted to drama programming.

Peter Billingsley plays Ralphie, a boy who desperately wants a Bb gun for Christmas. Melinda Dillon plays his mother and Darren McGavin his father.

A Christmas Story Christmas Trailer: I'm Not Crying ... I Got A Bb In My Eye
Image
Perhaps you've watched the 1983 film "A Christmas Story" over and over again. It would be no surprise. It's often on a loop on Christmas Day. Heck, it might have been on enough in the background of your holiday celebrations that you've seen it more than "Star Wars." (Let's not dwell on the fact that there were a few other sequels, including "My Summer Story" in 1994, or the direct-to-dvd sequel that takes place six years after the original...

Peter Billingsley Returns as Ralphie in First Teaser for ‘A Christmas Story Christmas’
Image
One of the most famous Christmas films of all time is getting a sequel. HBO Max released the first teaser for “A Christmas Story Christmas,” set to release on the streamer November 17.

The repetitively titled film is a sequel to 1983’s “A Christmas Story,” directed by Bob Clark and based on Jean Shepard’s 1966 novel “In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash.” Set in the ’40s, the original film starred Peter Billingsley as Ralphie Parker, an ordinary 9-year-old boy engaging in various hijinks around Christmastime while desperately yearning to get a Bb gun for the big holiday. Shepard narrated the film as an adult Ralphie reminiscing about his childhood. The film was a moderate success during its original theatrical run, grossing about 69 million against a 3 million budget, but became a seasonal classic thanks to repeated television airings, and receives annual 24-hour marathons on cable channels such as TNT and TBS.
