Jackie Chan is one of the most influential and popular actors in the industry who has had a ridiculously long career. Ever since his cameo as a child-actor in Big and Little Wong Tin Bar (1962), he has been prolific in picking up acting roles. Over six decades later, he shows no signs of stopping as Chan is returning for Karate Kid: Legends in 2025. He's led innumerable action movies and left an indelible mark on the martial arts scene as a man who performs his own stunts and adds his traditional comical twist to daring stuntwork.

However, despite the longevity that has continued well into the 21st Century, whenever he's talked about, people mostly refer to Jackie Chan's best action movies from the 1990s or the best old-school kung fu movies starring Jackie Chan. While he no longer takes on action-heavy roles that involve the most unbelievable stunts, Chan hasn't slowed his roll.

After successfully debuting with her feature “28+1”, Hong Kong director Kearan Pang experimented with other media and formats, ultimately leading to the inspiration for what would become “Mama’s Affair”. Her work as creative director for singer Joey Yung’s concert series “My Secret Live” as well as a coach on the reality competition “King Maker” gave her some insight into the music industry, the way bands and artists are pushed and how talents are discovered. These themes heavily influenced the characters and the plot for “Mama’s Affair” which sees a former talent manager getting back to her old ways as she seeks to support the dancing and singing skills of a young man, an enterprise resulting in a promising start for a new career, but also in conflicts with her family.

Twenty-four years ago, on the evening that the U.K. handed political control of Hong Kong to China in 1997, Hong Kong leading man and Cantopop superstar Andy Lau performed in state broadcaster CCTV’s song-and-dance spectacular to mark the occasion.

As the camera panned through an audience waving both Chinese and Hong Kong flags, he sang a dulcet duet with Chinese singer Na Ying of one of iconic Taiwanese singer-songwriter Lo Ta-yu’s most famous songs, “Pearl of the Orient.”

Lo had written the song in 1986 as an ode to Hong Kong and its unique identity as a haven and hub between east and west. The song nods to the territory’s troubles under British colonial rule, and implores it not to lose sight of its Chinese identity. Last year, Chapman To proved to be far and away the best thing about Heiward Mak's Diva, a supposedly biting look at celebrity and the entertainment industry, that starred popstar Joey Yung in the title role, and To as her cutthroat manager. Something good does seem to have come out of that project however, as To's character has been spun off into his own movie, The Midas Touch. The Hong Kong music industry comes under the spotlight in “Diva” from hotly tipped director Heiward Mak, who received praise and attention for her earlier outings “High Noon” and “Ex”, and for co-scripting Pang Ho Cheung’s excellent “Love in a Puff”. Headlined and produced by Chapman To, taking the role of a ruthless and shifty manager, the film appropriately also stars real life Canto-pop chanteuse Joey Yung (“Crazy N’ the City”) and new pop talent Mag Lam (“Live in Flames”) as two rival songbirds trying to navigate the pitfalls of the business, a premise ripe for a scandalous exposé. The film opens with manager Man (Chapman To) taking a young singer called J (Joey Yung) under his wing. Fast forward to the present day, and J is now one of Hong Kong’s top Canto-pop stars, her outwardly glamorous life completely controlled by the shrewd Man, who even manipulates her relationships to his benefit.

There is no getting away from Chapman To these days, but the guy has been on a roll of impressive form, starring in films like Wong Jing's Mr. & Mrs. Gambler, Herman Yau's Love Lifting, Pang Ho Cheung's uproarious comedy Vulgaria and Fung Chi Chiang's The Bounty. At the same time that the Hong Kong Film Festival is held (currently in full swing), Filmart (21 - 24 April) unveiled several titles that caught our eye and that we look forward to in the near future. Among the noteworthy items promoted at the event, the lineup at Emperor Motion Pictures includes four major films, "The Great Magician", "The Last Supper", "The Viral Factor" and "Diva".
