Bong Joon-ho is a one of a kind.

He’s only made 8 films in the past 25 years, but each feature is a precious jewel, expertly chiseled and finely shined. Before Bong Joon Ho's Oscar-winning Parasiteor his French comic adaptation Snowpiercer, the acclaimed director cut his teeth on a charming black comedy. Barking Dogs Never Bitefollows unemployed academic Ko Yun-ju (Lee Sung-jae) as he struggles to find work while supporting his pregnant wife, Eun-sil (Kim Ho-jung). Barking Dogs Never Bite is an entertaining glimpse into the style and themes that would later garner Bong Joon Ho well-earned acclaim. The film is funny and relatable and biting in its societal critiques.

Continuing the small trend of Korean action movies about stories of locals outside of Asia, as in “Escape from Mogadishu” and “The Point Men”, Kim Seong-je has come up with a story taking place in Bogota this time, with the film actually being shot there, at least until Covid forced the filmmakers to relocate in Korea. At the same time, however, the quality of these titles seems to deteriorate with each entry, and “City of the Lost”, unfortunately, is no exception.
