With 99 submissions, this year's Best Comedy Directing category at the Emmys will have six finalists when the nominations are announced July 15.

Similar to the drama category, the comedy directing ballot has a mix of shows that took different approaches to their entries. While some played it smart (see: Hacks and The Studio) submitting one memorable episode that will be a sure-thing to make the final field, others opted for three entries, with Shrinking going up to four. In those cases, overload and potential vote-splitting make it harder to discern which episode entry will make it into the lineup of six — technically five, since one spot is reserved for a multicamera show. The upcoming fourth season of the Apple TV+ series Acapulco will be the comedy’s last on the streamer. Per Variety, the comedy was renewed for its fourth season back in August 2024, but at that time, it was not confirmed that it would be the final one for the series starring Eugenio Derbez.

The outlet has now confirmed that the fourth season, which will premiere on Apple TV+ on July 23, will be Acapulco’s last. “These four seasons have been magical,” said Derbez, who plays Máximo Gallardo on the series and is also an executive producer. The show follows a successful businessman (Derbez) as he reminisces about his younger years in the 1980s while working his dream job at a major resort called Las Colinas. The series currently boasts a 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

CBS has given Ghosts fans some very good news. The show has received a two-season renewal from the studio through the 2026/2027 season.

Deadline reports that the Ghosts renewal comes along with a Season 2 order for the breakout Chuck Lorre comedy, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, starring Montana Jordan and Emily Osment. Other series to land renewals include Tracker, Fire Country, Elsbeth, NCIS, NCIS: Origins, NCIS: Sydney and Hollywood Squares. Ghosts is the first non-Chuck Lorre comedy on CBS to land a multi-season renewal in many years.

It’s been a minute since we checked in on Máximo, old and young, and Las Colinas. Actually, it’s been like 16 months in the real world, which is why it was a wise choice for the “Acapulco” Season 3 trailer to open with the exposition it did.

CBS has renewed the comedy “Ghosts” for Season 4 and the drama “Fire Country” for Season 3.

Both shows launched their new seasons in mid-February due to the impact last year’s dual writers’ and actors’ strike had on broadcast production schedules.

“’Ghosts’ and ‘Fire Country’ are proven viewer favorites on both broadcast and streaming thanks to exceptional storytelling, talented actors and an ever-growing fan base,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment. “We are elated to keep the momentum going and bring them back to CBS next season.”

Per CBS, “Ghosts” is currently averaging 10.2 million viewers per episode in Live+7 multiplatform viewing, while “Fire Country” is averaging 9.2 million.

CBS is looking to scare up more laughs after handing an early Season 4 renewal to supernatural comedy Ghosts.

It is the latest renewal order for the Paramount-owned network, which also handed a third season to Fire Country and gave Justin Hartley series Tracker a second season earlier this month.

Ghosts, which is based on the BBC’s British comedy, has been a success for CBS since launching in 2021. Its third season is averaging over 10M viewers in live 7-day multiplatform viewing, which is marginally up from last year and streaming numbers are up on Paramount+, where the company said it ranked as its number one comedy in February.

The move gives some continuity to CBS’ comedy slate for next season as two of its longer running series, Young Sheldon and Bob Hearts Abishola are coming to an end.

The news comes a month after the show’s Season 2 finale, which premiered on the streamer December 16. The show premiered in October 2021, with both seasons consisting of 10 episodes. Season 3 will again consist of 10 episodes, and is scheduled to begin production later this spring.

Apple TV+ has released the Season 2 trailer of the bilingual comedy “Acapulco,” which will drop its first two episodes on Oct. 21.

Starring Eugenio Derbez, the series follows 20-something Máximo Gallardo (Enrique Arrizon), who earns his dream job as a cabana boy at the hottest resort in Acapulco, Las Colinas.

“Blockbuster,” a Netflix comedy series about the flagship movie rental store starring Randall Park, has set a premiere date for Nov. 3. The half-hour comedy’s 10 episodes will premiere all at once on the streaming service.

In Mixtape, on the eve of Y2K, orphaned, awkward 12-year-old Beverly Moody (Allen) discovers a broken mixtape crafted by her teen parents. Raised by her grandmother Gail (Bowen), a former teen mom herself who finds it painful to speak about her late daughter, Beverly sees this mixtape as a chance to finally learn more about her parents. So she sets out on a journey to find all the songs on the tape.

Netflix continues to bet big on kids and family programming. The streaming service announced on Friday it optioned the rights to Annie Barrows’ illustrated children’s book series “Ivy & Bean” and plans to make them into movies.

The live-action films will be one-hour in length and geared toward family audiences. Kathy Waugh is writing the movies.
