Netflix won the streaming wars long ago and now boasts 300 million subscribers worldwide. But its massive success has come at a cost -- namely, anyone looking to criticize the streaming age (and there is a lot to criticize) will highlight Netflix as one of the chief architects of our current moment, in which we find ourselves surrounded by a homogenous gloop of generic streaming movies and series. To be sure, Netflix has been largely responsible for this state of affairs simply by virtue of being the first and biggest streamer in the game. Still, it's not entirely fair to dismiss the company and its vast catalog of media outright.
For one thing, amid the never-ending waves of "content," the streamer is also delivering some truly great TV shows. Take "Adolescence," for example, which is one of the best Netflix originals ever. This mini-series comprises four episodes that were each shot in one continuous take.

Isaacs said, “Zal [Batmanglij] and Brit [Marling] and I had dinner last week in Los Angeles, and there’s no chance for letting it go.” He added, “That’s all I can say. Not because I’m keeping secrets from you, but because we will not let it go.”

On a chilly day at a vintage studio building on the Eastside of Los Angeles, Natasha Lyonne sat in front of a large-screen TV and played with a joystick.
The device in her hand looked a lot like a vintage Atari 2600 paddle, and as she spun it one way, then the other, images appeared, shapeshifted and melted into various forms of digital surreality; at one point the model generated a tableau it called “Artpixel Monochromatic Media Shower Fractal 3.”
Lyonne would occasionally emote to the two men sitting near her, who sometimes took the paddle. “Go back to the Rothko,” she exclaimed in her unmistakable Long Island rasp at one point, as onscreen an image popped up in the style of the American abstract expressionist and then just as quickly disappeared.

It seems like we don't get as many complex and interesting science fiction shows as we used to, like creators are apprehensive about taking bold swings with potentially complex concepts (just look at how watered down 3 Body Problem wound up being on Netflix). And who can blame them when many of this past decade's best and most promising sci-fi shows have resulted in early cancellations?
To be fair, Apple TV+ is still trying to provide ample sci-fi series between Severance, Foundation, and Silo, but it would be nice if there were more high-profile options between the various streamers. It made me start thinking about the sci-fi shows of the past and the ones I still think about all the time, wishing they hadn't been canceled so soon.

In the six years since Season 2 of Netflix’s sci-fi drama, The Oa, came to an end, fans have been vocally desperate for more. The truly one-of-a-kind series went where no other production had gone in the past — or even in the days since. Featuring performances from familiar names like Jason Isaacs, Phyllis Smith,Brit Marling, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Patrick Gibson, and more, the show not only had its incredible storyline going for it, but was also a star-studded affair. And, with an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 84% from critics and 83% from audiences, it’s no wonder why The Oa’s following is still pushing for answers when it comes to the title’s future.

If you're looking for a science fiction show to watch, you have lots of options. There are action-oriented shows, comedies, dramas, shows that use sci-fi in unique ways, and others that just have it as window dressing. Some shows are stellar, others are pretty awful, and they all do their best to make their ideas accessible to viewers, which may involve "dumbing them down."
Then there are sci-fi shows that lean more into the "science" part of science fiction to the point where some viewers might feel a bit lost. Sci-fi shows can explore difficult subjects ranging from politics to religion that can be uncomfortable to grapple with. However, these same shows can boast incredible writing and acting and often pay off those challenging themes well. If you push past the barriers, you may find your new favorite series!

The Oa, the sci-fi mystery by Netflix, is one of the streamer's signature genre shows, even if it hasn't been in the spotlight lately. Created by Zal Batmanglij and Brit Marling, the latter of whom also plays the lead, The Oa was a bit polarizing with audiences upon release, but the critical reception was always good. Season 2 was very well-received too, but it surprisingly got canceled months after the premiere. Since 2019, fans have been pleading for its return, and now star Jason Isaacs has offered a promising update that will give fans something to be excited about.
"We will not let it go," Isaacs said about The Oa when talking to Jo Whiley on her podcast. As reported by Comic Book, Isaacs appeared on the podcast and addressed the Netflix fan-favorite released in 2016. “I became some weird Darth Vader character,” says actor turned director Natasha Lyonne over the internet response to her forthcoming film, Uncanny Valley, partly made using ‘ethical’ AI.
In April, Poker Face and Russian Doll star Natasha Lyonne announced that she’s to direct and star in a sci-fi film called Uncanny Valley, co-written with fellow actor Brit Marling. The more controversial part of the announcement was that the project will in some way use generative AI alongside more typical filmmaking techniques.
The internet reaction to the news was, presumably, rather unfavourable, as Lyonne brought the online response up during an interview with Variety.
“It’s comedic that people misunderstand headlines so readily because of our bizarro culture of not having reading comprehension,” Lyonne said. “Suddenly I became some weird Darth Vader character or something. That’s crazy talk, but God bless!”

The actress is set to get behind the camera for the upcoming movie Uncanny Valley. Lyonne co-wrote the script with The Oa co-creator Brit Marling, and the two are also set to star in the upcoming sci-fi animated film. Natasha Lyonne had a long press line clamoring for her attention Thursday night at the second season premiere of Peacock’s Poker Face in Hollywood. The veteran actress, whose multi-hyphenate duties on the critically acclaimed comedy series include writing, directing, starring and executive producing, didn’t have time to stop for every outlet before she was needed on the American Legion Post 43 stage to introduce the screening alongside her partner-in-crime Rian Johnson.
So she did something rare (and appreciated among the journalists left waiting outside) by heading to the stage to deliver those comments only to return to the red carpet and give every reporter some of her undivided attention. After detailing the “magic” of the new season thanks to a killer line-up of high-profile guest stars, The Hollywood Reporter asked Lyonne about that other new project of hers on the horizon — an artificial intelligence-infused film Uncanny Valley.

Natasha Lyonne first burst onto the scene in the late '90s with her work in movies like American Pie and But I’m a Cheerleader, but she’s embraced a new level of stardom in the last few years. She took her fame to new levels thanks to her role as Nicky Nichols in Orange is the New Black, and more recently, she’s become known for playing Charlie Cale in Poker Face. It was announced earlier this week that Lyonne would make her directorial debut on Uncanny Valley, a new film that will see her work with Asteria, "an artist-led generative AI film and animation studio." Lyonne recently sat down with Collider’s Christina Radish to talk Poker Face Season 2, and she spoke about the team tasked with bringing Uncanny Valley to life:
"The subject matter is something that’s not too unknown. There’s a lot of information on it.

Natasha Lyonne has racked up over 130 screen acting credits over the course of a career that stretches back to the mid-1980s – and now she’s ready to make her feature directorial debut. Variety reports that Lyonne, who has co-founded an AI production studio called Asteria, will be taking the helm of Uncanny Valley, a film that will be made by “combining AI tools with traditional filmmaking techniques.” Asteria is described as an “artist-led, ethical AI film and animation studio.”
Lyonne wrote the screenplay with Brit Marling, the co-creator and co-showrunner of The Oa and A Murder at the End of the World. Lyonne and Marling will both have acting roles in the film, which is set in a parallel present and follows Mila, a teenage girl who begins to lose her grip on reality as a globally popular augmented reality video game starts glitching feverishly with increasingly dangerous real-world consequences.

Natasha Lyonne Talks ‘Uncanny Valley’ Directorial Debut, Use Of “Copyright-Clean” AI & Danger Of Agi
Exclusive: Part of Hollywood’s cohort of ethical AI advocates, Natasha Lyonne is walking the talk with her upcoming feature directorial debut.
Ahead of the Season 2 premiere of Poker Face, returning May 8 with three episodes on Peacock, the 2x Golden Globe nominee told Deadline how she plans to utilize artificial intelligence in Uncanny Valley, in contrast from the “dirty model” on which the tech is often built.
“I just heard we have this first clean foundational model that is copyright-clean that you can build on, but ultimately that is a tool,” explained Lyonne. “That’s not going to omit any department heads or production designers or cinematographers. This movie I’m doing with Brit Marling is actually a real film.”

In the world of constantly developing and evolving technology and artificial intelligence, it seems like even Hollywood’s entertainment industry doesn’t seem to be exempt from inching closer and closer to becoming heavily invested in it. This comes amidst the latest reports about Russian Doll actress Natasha Lyonne’s upcoming directorial project.
While there is still a lot of skepticism around the use of AI in these entertainment pieces, the actress, writer, director, and producer all in one is reportedly not hesitating to take the leap and allow artificial intelligence to dominate greater parts of filmmaking. This is because her next directorial flick is reportedly set to be made with the heavy use of AI.

The film too is about that very gulf between live-action and AI and why even as the technology has improved immensely, audiences...

AI production studio Asteria revealed its first live-action feature, titled “Uncanny Valley,” which will also mark the feature directorial debut of studio co-founder Natasha Lyonne and will be made by combining AI tools with “traditional” filmmaking techniques. Asteria describes itself as an “artist-led, ethical AI film and animation studio.”
Lyonne and Brit Marling – co-creator and co-showrunner with Zal Batmanglij on “The Oa” and “A Murder at the End of the World” – co-wrote the screenplay and will co-star. Set in a parallel present, “Uncanny Valley” follows Mila, a teenage girl who begins to lose her grip on reality as a globally popular augmented reality video game starts glitching feverishly with increasingly dangerous real-world consequences.
The movie’s “open world video game” component will be co-created by Lyonne, Marling and virtual reality pioneer Jaron Lanier, involving Moonvalley’s “Marey” foundational AI model.

Natasha Lyonne is set to make her feature-length directorial debut with a new AI-generated movie. Lyonne will be joined by computer scientist and visual artist Jaron Lanier for the project.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed news of Lyonne's Uncanny Valley, a feature film "set in the world of immersive video games"' that plans to make "abundant" use of artificial intelligence. The project is backed by Asteria, a new AI-based studio founded by Lyonne and LA filmmaker/entrepreneur Bryn Mooser. A representative for Asteria said the film will "blend" traditional storytelling techniques with cutting-edge AI tech to create a "radical new cinematic experience."
Uncanny Valley's story will be directed by Lyonne from a script she wrote with Brit Marling, although it wasn't made clear in the original announcement if generative A.I. was involved in creating the script. The story is centered on a teenage girl who becomes entranced with...

Natasha Lyonne, who currently stars in Poker Face, is set to make her directorial debut soon. However, it won't be in the way fans of the acclaimed performer might be thinking. The five-time Emmy-nominated actress will be tackling an AI film that she co-wrote, but there is a twist — the project will be a mixture of traditional filmmaking and AI-generated video. As Hollywood continues to show resistance against AI, some studios and filmmakers have sought to normalize it and make it a "tool" for artists.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Lyonne is set to direct and star in Uncanny Valley, based on a script she wrote alongside Brit Marling, who will also be featured in the film. The collaboration will be produced by Asteria, the generative AI studio company that was co-founded by Lyonne. As the name suggests, Uncanny Valley will blend live-action and AI-generated elements. Natasha Lyonne is set to make her feature directorial debut — with a big assist from artificial intelligence.
The “Poker Face” star is teaming up with Brit Marling and renowned computer scientist Jaron Lanier to create “Uncanny Valley,” a “hybrid film” that combines live action and AI. The new flick was announced on Tuesday by Asteria Studios, the self-described “ethical AI film and animation studio” that Lyonne co-founded alongside Bryn Mooser.
“Uncanny Valley,” per a release from Asteria, will be “powered by ‘Marey,’ the first clean foundational AI model developed by the engineers at Moonvalley, ensuring creative integrity and copyright transparency.”
Lyonne, in a statement shared with TheWrap, said it is “astounding” what can be created with AI when it is used “ethically and creatively.”

You are not a gadget — but you might be immersed in an artificial intelligence-generated film.
In one of the more unusual creative collaborations to come along in a while, The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Jaron Lanier — the longtime technology innovator and sometime-skeptic — is teaming with Natasha Lyonne and Brit Marling for a new feature film that will be set in the world of immersive video games and make abundant use of AI.
Uncanny Valley, as the project is called, is backed by Asteria, the new AI-based studio founded by Lyonne and Los Angeles-based filmmaker and entrepreneur Bryn Mooser. Lyonne will direct from a script she wrote with Marling; both will star.
Centered on a teenage girl who becomes unmoored by a hugely popular Ar video game in a parallel present, the movie will blend traditional live-action and game elements. The latter will be created by Lanier as well as Lyonne and Marling.

Netflix has a problem. The streaming platform, which once almost completely dominated the market, has been feeling the pressure when it comes to creating original content. Recently, fans were shocked to hear the streaming giant won’t be bringing back some of its most beloved originals, including David Fincher’s Mindhunter. It appears that Netflix won’t think twice when it comes to axing great shows: if it happened to series like The Oa, anyone (except Stranger Things) could be next. That said, the idea of a revival of The Oa isn’t off the table, at least according to Jason Isaacs. It’s been six years since The Oa’s cancellation, and the wound still hurts for many fans who were left dumbfounded by Season 2’s shocking cliffhanger. To make things worse, series creators Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij had intended the show to last five seasons, leaving many...

Ron Perlman would have us believe that war never changes, but the movies about it certainly have. The last 20 years have brought no shortage of films about the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan (for obvious reasons), but the best war movies of the 21st century show that World War II continues to fascinate filmmakers most of all.
While those conflicts have dominated the genre lately, everything from the Civil War to the Battle of Red Cliffs has found powerful expression onscreen. Kathryn Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker” tells us that “war is a drug,” and the films below suggest that movies about war are just as addictive — maybe even more so. We hope this list provides your fix.
With contributions from Anne Thompson and Michael Nordine.

At an artificial intelligence summit in Paris last month, Vice President Jd Vance slammed the European Union for what he called “excessive regulation” around the advancement of artificial intelligence, adding that such regulation will hinder innovation in the tech industry.
His comments were music to the ears of tech giants like Google and OpenAI, who last week submitted formal proposals to the White House Office of Science and Technology (Ostp) regarding the U.S. AI Action Plan. Their suggestions, essentially: Regulation? Who needs that?
Specifically, both companies included sections in their proposals regarding copyright and argued that, when it comes to copyright laws, the government should apply the fair use doctrine to AI. OpenAI said doing so is “not only a matter of American competitiveness — it’s a matter of national security.” Google said it’s “essential for accelerating AI in science.”

Women are rarely the focus of Western movies and television series. Most Western movies—rich with outlaws, bloodshed, and gunfighters—often revolve around men, leaving the female experience out of the picture or putting them in the background. However, there are a few cases when women become the center of attention.
From The Dead Don't Hurt to True Grit, female characters of all ages have shown courage and toughness in the early days of America. As wives and daughters, they must find their way to survive in the Wild West and the patriarchal world. Some become excellent gunslingers, while others utilize their wisdom to navigate tough situations and defend their ground.
Updated by Christopher Raley on January 20, 2025: The typically male-dominated genre has occasionally brought out some tough female leads. Westerns that focus on strong female characters have enriched and enlivened the genre as it has currently been undergoing a renaissance.

The summer of 2023 gave us Barbenheimer, November debuted Glicked, and Christmas Day gifted audiences the far less catchy Baberatu, with Nosferatu and Babygirl competing at the box office to finish out the year. Though Robert Eggers’ gothic horror remake and Halina Reijn’s erotic thriller are quite different, each film happens to star one of the leads from the 2023 limited series A Murder at the End of the World, Emma Corrin and Harris Dickinson. Though Dickinson has much more of a lead role in Babygirl than Corrin does in Nosferatu, they’re a match made in heaven in the FX mystery thriller series from Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij.

Some shows are canceled way before their time, leaving us with major cliffhangers and questions. The axe can often come for sci-fi and fantasy shows, since they often have bigger budgerts than other kinds of series. We’re looking back at five shows that were canceled way too soon.
In some cases, these shows just needed another few episodes of a movie to wrap things up, or maybe they got their chance to finish things but didn't do in a way that did the rest of the show justice. In some cases, they wrapped things up well, but that doesn’t mean we don’t want more.
2024 saw some major cancellations. However, this list will take us back a few years (or even decades)!

When Patrick Gibson was auditioning to star in Dexter: Original Sin, there were a few items that never came up but probably should have. The first was his comfort level with the sight of blood; the series is a prequel to the Emmy-winning mid-aughts dark comedy about an avenging serial killer, to which gore, however tastefully done, is integral. The second was the matter of The Wig. The prequel’s timeline directly coincides with the original’s infamous flashback to Dexter’s first kill, during which Michael C. Hall dons a hairpiece not dissimilar to that of Lord Farquaad’s (plus, it’s stringy) — Gibson, as his fans well know, has a signature look of blond curls.
Luckily for all involved, Gibson, the 29-year-old Ireland-born actor who broke big in The Oa and starred in The Darkest Minds and Shadow & Bone, is a very cool customer. He’s not at all squeamish,...

Its not uncommon for a TV show to grow creatively as it gains popularity, and the creators are given a bit more artistic freedom, especially in fantasy or sci-fi shows. To some viewers, this can feel like bait and switch, while to others this just strengthens the appeal.

The Oa might have been the most mysterious and ambitious series ever seen on Netflix. But just as the genre-defying show added a new twist with a mindblowing cliffhanger, Netflix canceled The Oa. The Oa followed the formerly blind Prairie Johnson, who is telling her incredible story to a group of misfits in a nearby abandoned building after she arrives home, able to see and referring to herself as The Oa, after she had been missing for seven years.
In the three years between seasons 1 and 2, The Oa gained a passionate fanbase and critical acclaim for its complex and moving story, with season 1's 76% Rotten Tomatoes rating being beaten by season 2's 92%. However, when Netflix addressed The Oa's cancelation, executives implied that The Oa had still not been attracting enough viewers to justify its high budget. In Monsieur Spade, Clive Owen plays Sam Spade the private detective at the heart of 1941's The Maltese Falcon but the AMC series isn't the actor's only contemporary noir series that's worth watching. A few months before Monsieur Spade's premiere, Owen appeared in Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij's A Murder at the End of the World, a psychological thriller that sees the actor in a much different, though equally compelling, role. Seemingly, Monsieur Spade, the stealth Maltese Falcon sequel, might have made a bigger splash for the actor, especially since he's tasked with channeling Hollywood icon Humphrey Bogart.
Like any good continuation, Monsieur Spade reveals what happened after Maltese Falcon, with Owen's version of the private detective relocating to an estate in rural France. Although Spade is eager to enjoy his retirement, the brutal murder of six nuns at a local convent pulls Sam back into the murder-mystery game.

But the streaming service also features a large collection of other films that have nothing to do with its major franchises – many of them movies Disney now owns after acquiring other Hollywood studios.
With this in mind, here’s our list of the best films on Disney Plus that aren’t Iron Man, Star Wars, Frozen or anything of that ilk. Encompassing just about every genre, there’s sure to be something to suit your taste if you’re struggling to decide what to watch this evening.
We’ll also keep this list updated as titles shuffle off and new ones are added.

There was a time not too long ago when whodunnits seemed to be a dusty relic of cinema’s past. Mysteries about a cast of colorful characters at the center of a murder case, and the intrepid detective investigating them, were far and few between in movie theaters for what felt like decades, and the rare films to feature those plots seldom attracted much attention. But nowadays, the genre is back, baby.
In 2017, Kenneth Branagh directed and starred as the iconic detective Hercule Poirot in “Murder on the Orient Express,” based on one of mystery writer Agatha Christie’s most famous novels. It was the first high-profile Christie adaptation to hit theaters in ages, after 1988’s “Appointment with Death.” The movie was highly successful, and Branagh has returned to that Poirot mustache with “Death on the Nile” and “A Haunting in Venice,” the latter of which opened in theaters this month.
