The cast of the animated Avatar: The Last Airbender universe discussed how the show's resurgence on Netflix during the Covid-19 pandemic affected their understanding of the cartoon's legacy.Avatar: The Last Airbender is widely regarded as one of the greatest animated shows ever made; it's acclaimed for its accessible storytelling, handling of complex subject matter, worldbuilding, and charming, relatable, and well-developed characters.
Having first aired on Nickelodeon between 2005 and 2008, long before streaming became ubiquitous, an entire generation of kids grew up with Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, and Zuko, learning from their grief, pain, hope, and friendship. When the series was re-platformed by Netflix over 10 years later, it became a global sensation, especially during the lockdown days of the Covid-19 pandemic.

San Diego Comic-Con 2025 brought together the cast of Avatar: The Last Airbenderfor a special 20th-anniversary panel. Following the event, Cbr hosted a round table with the cast, including Zach Tyler Eisen, Jack DeSena, Michaela Jill Murphy, Jennie Kwan, Janet Varney and Dante Basco -- the respective voices of Aang, Sokka, Toph, Suko, Korra and Zuko.
While a variety of subjects were discussed, including the newly unveiled Avatar: Seven Havens, one of the more curious topics to come up was Basco's first meeting with his on-screen father, Mark Hamill. The first meeting between Prince Zuko and Fire Lord Ozai's voice actors wasn't the type of experience one might expect for the younger star.

At San Diego Comic-Con 2025, the voice of Avatar: The Last Airbender's Sokka, Jack DeSenna, reunited with his past co-stars for both a 20th-anniversary panel, along with a round-table discussion organized by Cbr. During the latter, DeSenna revealed some surprising information regarding what Sokka was originally like and the influence his performance had on him.
Sokka is one of the most popular Avatar characters of all time, but he nearly wasn't the character fans know and love. While speaking with Zach Tyler Eisen, Dante Basco, Michaela Jill Murphy, Jennie Kwan and Janet Varney -- the voices of Aang, Zuko, Toph, Suki and Korra, respectively -- DeSenna explained that he's responsible for making Sokka the fun goofball that he is.

Fans of Avatar Korra in The Legend of Korrawill love her all over again after hearing what fellow franchise voice actor Richard Epcar had to say about her in a recent guest appearance.
Avatar Aang was once the young male lead of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and The Legend of Korra needed a protagonist who would fill the same role as Aang in the Avatar world while otherwise feeling fresh and new. Aside from having a much more brash and confrontational personality, Korra also shows how men and women alike can be the world's greatest hero with the power of the Avatar Cycle. Epcar, who voiced Saikhan in the series, commented on Korra's role directly during his appearance on the most recent official Avatar podcast, "Braving the Elements," co-hosted by Korra voice actor Janet Varney and Zuko voice actor Dante Basco.

Despite being a series designed primarily for children, Avatar: The Last Airbender touches on a host of relatively dark and mature topics, one of which is awful parents. There are plenty of examples to be found across the Avatar franchise, with Fire Lord Ozai being an obvious pick, but also Toph's extremely overprotective parents and Asami's father, the industrialist Hiroshi Sato.
On the most recent episode of Braving the Elements, Janet Varney and Dante Basco, the official voices of Korra and Zuko, respectively, sat down with guest James Sie (the voice of the cabbage merchant) to talk about Book 1, Episode 8 of The Legend of Korra, "The Aftermath." While on the topic, Basco commented that Mr. Sato is "a real piece of work," prompting Verney to say that "Zuko and Asami could have a real good conversation about disappointing dads." Relatively few shows leave indelible marks on entire generations, but it's easy to see that Avatar: The Last Airbender did exactly that. From the huge list of quotable lines like Zuko's "That's rough, buddy" to memes like Uncle Iroh's "It's time for you to look inward...,"Avatar has become deeply ingrained in the general pop culture library. However, the Cabbage Merchant in particular has won over many hearts, despite typically only ever repeating some variant of his singular memorable line: "My cabbages!"

It's been 11 years since the last episode of Avatar: The Legend of Korra aired on Nickelodeon, where the final scene featured Korra and Asami going to the Spirit World together as a couple. However, before she became the ally that many knew her for, it was recently revealed that she was initially planned to be Korra's enemy. Avatar: The Last Airbender wrapped up its original run in 2008, but fan debates about the series rage on -- particularly ships. It's not just viewers who are still arguing about which characters should have ended up together in the hit animated series, but the stars of the show, too.

The Legend of Korrastar Janet Varney opens up about one of the show's deepest -- and most vulnerable -- scenes, both for her character as well as in the recording booth.
During the latest episode of Braving the Elements, the official Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise rewatch podcast, Varney discussed a key moment from the sequel series in which Korra collapses in Tenzen's arms, crying. When asked by Zuko voice actor Dante Basco if she remembered recording the scene, Varney replied, "I do, because that was the first time, on this show, I cried. And I remember [voice director] Andrea [Romano] was so, like, kind."

The canon of Avatar: The Last Airbender makes a very potent cast for Zuko and Katara ending up together. While these characters ended up taking completely different paths in their lives, it is easy to spot that even subtextually, the narrative was always primed to serve a relationship between The Blue Spirit and the Painted Lady.
A slew of cast and crew members of Avatar: The Last Airbender believed that there was some merit in keeping Zuko and Katara together, and there have been some conflicting statements about the nature of how the relationship might have been in the cards, to be part of the official narrative. Whether it was or not is a different matter, because in terms of the flow of narrative, it makes complete sense that Zuko and Katara should have ended up together.

The world of Avatar: The Last Airbenderis rich and constantly expanding. After Aang's (Zach Tyler Eisen) story concluded, the beloved series got a sequel, The Legend of Korra, which explored the next incarnation of the Avatar, Korra (Janet Varney). And the universe is set to expand once again with the announcement of a new series focusing on the Earthbender following Korra. Though little is known about the upcoming series, Avatar: Seven Havens, it promises a very different world for the next Avatar. Set in a "world shattered by a devastating cataclysm" where the Avatar is not regarded as the hero it once was, the new series will be unique, much like The Legend of Korra's 1920s-inspired city set it apart from its predecessor.

In a special podcast episode with The Illustration Department, Dimartino discussed the challenges of creating Avatar: The Last Airbender’s sequel series, The Legend of Korra. Dimartino stated about the sequel’s darker themes, "We could never have made Korra first, Nickelodeon would never. Even when we made the show, they were like, 'What do we do with this show?' Because it didn’t quite fit their kid audience."

The 2010s and 2020s saw a surge of American children's media that put queerness front and center. Take the work of N.D. Stevenson, such as the Netflix series "She-Ra and the Princesses of Power" and the animated film "Nimona," based on his graphic novel. From "Steven Universe" to "The Owl House," cartoons have gotten a lot gayer in the last decade.
And it is almost precisely a decade because Nickelodeon's "The Legend of Korra" is the show that broke down the dam in 2014. In the show's fourth and final season, Avatar Korra (Janet Varney) falls in love with her best friend, Asami Sato (Seychelle Gabriel). A sequel to "Avatar: The Last Airbender," "The Legend of Korra" is set in a fantasy world where people can bend one of the four elements. When two Japanese anime characters form a duo, those characters either complete one another or challenge each other, and there is always a sense of co-dependency. In a trio, however, there are ongoing tensions, a strong sense of competition, and rivalry that can also become jealousy, making the whole group much more interesting. However, many of the most iconic trios, such as Jesse, James and Meowth and Winry, Alphonse and Edward, have an underlying current of true care.
There are many iconic trios in the anime world, some composed entirely of villains, others of heroes, and some a mix of the two. Some trios are strong and determined main characters; others feature shy and quiet protagonists; still others are made of remarkable side characters. All these trios have one thing in common: they make the story unique and truly memorable.

"The Legend of Korra" concluded its fourth and final season 10 years ago today. It's not as universally loved a series as its predecessor, "Avatar: The Last Airbender," which is often held as a crowning achievement of American children's animation and epic fantasy. With those big shoes, "The Legend of Korra" was never going to completely fill them, but it still has great episodes and many fans — I'm one of them.
The show's greatest legacy is and will probably continue to be how it pushed boundaries for LGBTQ+ representation. Previously, out queer characters were verboten in America children's media, but "Korra" went as far as it could in Book 4, when Korra (Janet Varney) falls in love with her friend Asami Sato (Seychelle Gabriel). The series ends with them holding hands and staring into each other's eyes; you get the feeling that...

The Legend of Korra, a spin-off to Avatar: The Last Airbender, started in the Southern Water Tribe, where the current Avatar, Korra (voiced by Janet Varney), lived in relative seclusion. Korra felt cooped up in her native home and had only a handful of friends, but things shifted when she visited the metropolis of Republic City. It didn't take long for Korra to build a network of friends, teammates, and other connections who helped define her Avatar career.
For every enemy she made, such as Amon or Tarrlok, Korra made a friend who vowed to support her in her fight to maintain balance in the world, some becoming members of Team Avatar. By the story's end, Korra had many varied relationships. These are the most heartfelt, healthiest, and important ones. Even when personalities and philosophies clashed, loyalty remained, which created scenarios both entertaining and moving, now living on in the comics.

Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender might want to experience the same joy in another series, and there are 10 that could be up to the challenge. The Last Airbender is often considered one of the best animated shows of all time, and for good reason. It's endlessly funny, engaging, emotional, and endearing, and there's something for everyone. Many have tried to recapture the magic of The Last Airbender over the years, and Netflix even created a live-action adaptation of the original show to do just that. There are, however, other shows that can fill the same spot The Last Airbender managed to.

“Connor, James and Allan are all very talented comedians, and Lord knows we all can use some laughter these days,” said McKay in a statement to Deadline. “But they’re also asking questions that boldly challenge the international corporate power structure like ‘What happens if I start taking regular walks?’ And ‘What would happen if we brought dinosaurs back but they were super tiny?'”

Animated series like Avatar: The Last Airbender will always encourage fans to exercise their imagination and picture all-new fights or scenarios. What-if is always fun with series like Avatar, and that includes romance, too. There are a few canon romantic pairings, and some solid what-ifs such as Sokka and Princess Yue. Meanwhile, some fans like to think up truly bizarre pairings that the rest of the fandom rejects.
Every fan is free to imagine whatever romantic pairing they like, but their pet pairings/ships probably won't impress the other Avatar viewers, and such pairings can lead to strange or even uncomfortable fan art or fanfiction. Even when "what if?" is the rule, some romantic ships just don't add up, such as if the two characters have zero compatability or if their imagined romance is downright unhealthy or problematic in some way.

In the final episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2, Azula’s lightning strike takes down Aang, nearly killing him. Before Azula could finish her job, Iroh facilitated the Gaang’s escape, allowing Katara to treat his wounds using her Waterbending skills. However, the Fire Nation believed that the last Airbender was gone for good this time. In the first episode of Season 3, Azula gives credit to Zuko for taking down Aang when they met their father Fire Lord Ozai.
