Platform game Astro Bot led the winners of the 2025 BAFTA Games Awards, which were handed out in London on Tuesday evening, earning five honors, including for best game of the year. The psychological horror game Still Wakes the Deep received three gaming BAFTAs, including two performance honors.

Action-adventure Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II had led the pack with 11 nominations, ahead of Astro Bot and Still Wakes the Deep with six each, with the likes of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Lego Horizon Adventures, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth also earning nods. All contenders for the honors were released between Nov. 25, 2023, and Nov. 15, 2024.

During Tuesday evening’s ceremony in London, Bridgerton star Adjoa Andoh took to the stage to hand the BAFTA for a performer in a leading role in a game to Alec Newman for his role as Cameron McLeary in Still Wakes the Deep.

If you’re a fan of last year’s game of the year, Baldur’s Gate 3, you might have heard about the buzz around Karlach, one of the game’s most popular and beloved characters. Last year, a YouTuber named Chubblot discovered a super cool cutscene featuring Karlach.

Interestingly, they found it using mods, not with vanilla gameplay. This cutscene is a bit special because it breaks the fourth wall, making Karlach directly interact with the player in a unique way.

When Chubblot shared this find, it blew up in the community. People were excited and curious. Even Karlach’s voice actor, Samantha Béart, jumped in and challenged fans on social media to try and find this scene in their own playthroughs without using mods.

When you think of a game like Baldur’s Gate 3, you might imagine it being influenced by other epic fantasy tales such as Lord of the Rings or classic RPGs like the previous Baldur’s Gate games.

Karlach, one of the best characters in the game, was instead inspired by a character from an HBO show. Titus Pullo from HBO’s cult classic, Rome, played by the late Ray Stevenson, was a big inspiration for her.

Baldur’s Gate 3 emerged as a favorite for critics and consumers in 2023; apart from being a commercial success, the game also dominated video game awards. In an interview with Samantha Béart, one of the voice actors for the game, something interesting was revealed.

The game’s developer, Larian Studios, used a strategy that Marvel Studios has also used. The strategy, despised by Tom Holland, also worked well for the independent game studio and probably ensured no unrequited leaks in the creative funnel.

Despite missing its original Early Access release last July, the team at Villainous Games Studio has been hard at work to polish their upcoming first-person folk horror roguelite Harvest Hunt. So much so, that the team has announced a May 2024 release, complete with a new trailer during IGN Fan Fest, as well as announcing Neonhive Games as the publisher for Harvest Hunt.

BAFTA Breakthrough is a wonderful Netflix-supported initiative that celebrates the very best of young talent. In its 10th year, the alumni boasts the likes of Florence Pugh, Tom Holland and Letitia Wright – and this year comes a whole host of exciting new names. One of which caught our eye especially, which is Vivian Oparah, who shone in Peckham-set rom-com Rye Lane, which enamoured viewers with its spring-time release. We discuss what it means to her to be named as a BAFTA Breakthrough artist, and naturally we look back to Rye Lane, to talk about shooting the film, and the lasting, indelible impact it has left. She also looks ahead to a future that we’re gonna consider pretty damn bright.

A galaxy of 42 emerging creative talents from across the U.S., U.K. and India have been unveiled as the 2023 BAFTA Breakthrough cohort.

The selected talents have worked on some of the most lauded projects over the last several months including “The Last of Us,” “1923,” “Blue Jean,” “Rye Lane,” “Rocket Boys” and “Joyland.”

Breakthrough is BAFTA’s flagship new talent initiative in partnership with Netflix, drawn from creatives working in film, games and television. Awarded to those in the midst of, or on the cusp of their breakthrough moment, the year-long initiative includes one-to-one meetings and career guidance, full voting membership, access to BAFTA events and screenings, as well as networking events, both in the U.K. and internationally.

This year’s cohort comprises creatives spanning craft specialisms from hair and make up, production, editing and games design, to performance, directing and cinematography and is from diverse ethnic backgrounds and abilities.

Six of the 20 UK talents have previously been named Screen Stars of Tomorrow.

Actors Bella Ramsey and Vivian Oparah, and filmmakers Adjani Salmon and Raine Allen-Miller are among 32 talents selected for the 10th anniversary edition of the Bafta Breakthrough programme.

The 2023 edition of the talent-spotting scheme includes 20 UK names, and 12 individuals from the US.

Alongside the big reveal of the Creepshow teaser, there was plenty of other goodies for fans watching the 2023 edition of The Indie Horror Game Showcase. Fresh from the release of El Paso, Elsewhere last week, Strange Scaffold released an accolades trailer showing off select quotes and plenty of amazing scores for the neo-noir horror shooter. We’ve got a long wait ahead of us for season 13 of Doctor Who. The show already has a reputation for lengthy gaps between seasons and Coronavirus slamming the brakes on the British television industry means we’ll likely be waiting until mid to late 2021. Fortunately, it’s sounding like this year’s Christmas special, “Revolution of the Daleks” is still on track, as that’s already in post-production.

But Doctor Who fans will know that the show is far from limited to television screens. As such, this year’s big Doctor Who event, Time Lord Victorious, is getting a lot of attention. This will be an epic story involving three Doctors: the Eighth (Paul McGann), Ninth (Christopher Eccleston) and Tenth (David Tennant). The arc spans practically every form of media outside of TV, including novels, comics, audio dramas, video games and apparently, even escape rooms.
