Sheila Hocken nasceu em 1946 em Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, Inglaterra. É autora, conhecida pelo seu trabalho em Segunda Visão (1984) e The Light of Experience (1976). É casada com Don Hocken e tem um filho.
She was born with congenital cataracts which caused damage to her retina. Her parents and her brother also had defective eyesight. After relying on a guide dog, Emma, for ten years, her sight was partially restored by a cataract operation in 1975. She now works as a dog trainer in Nottinghamshire.
