Whenever we feel like watching an anime movie or series, Crunchyroll, Netflix and Hulu are the go-to platforms that offer a wide range of Japanese titles. However, this week a classic anime movie is landing on an unexpected streaming platform — Shudder. The addition makes perfect sense, since the streamer specializes in horror titles and Vampire Hunter D is considered one of the best horror anime movies ever made. The film will become available to stream a month from now, on May 30.

Vampire Hunter D was first released in 1985, and its addition to Shudder celebrates the anime movie's 40th anniversary. The streaming version is the remastered one that received special anniversary screenings in theaters earlier this month. The title is part of an extra-special selection of horror and thriller movies that are making their way into the catalog next month, including Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Lady Vengeance, Tremors, Jacob's Ladder and...

At this point in popular meme culture, everyone has seen or at least heard of the famous “Is this a pigeon?” meme, but very few know of its anime-based origins in a decades-old show titled The Brave Fighter of Sun Fighbird!

Entering into public consciousness circa 2011 (and then again in 2018), “Is this a pigeon?” has been used for years as a way to poke fun at or call out people that aren’t exactly well-equipped for a particular situation they have found themselves in but push through anyway. With the meme’s visual of a character from The Brave Fighter of Sun Fighbird happily (but wrongly) pointing out a butterfly as a pigeon, this meme is made unique by mixing up the original image with different text or photoshopped characters, making “Is this a pigeon?” one of the most customizable memes out there.
