In 1988, dedicated fans of Jon-Erik Hexum started a Star Trek-based fan club named in his honor. The USS Hexum is based in suburban St. Louis (Belleville, IL) and continues to this day.

For his last television appearance, the west German television mini-series Episode #1.3 (1984) Reporter Werner Baecker interviewed him in front of his home as Jon-Erik washed his sport car. This episode aired 11/29/84, a month after his death. Werner Baecker spoke in the off-commentary of this scene from this later death drama after the scenes were filmed.

Since his fatal accident fooling around with a prop gun with blanks, his death inspired new industrial rules around the safe handling of blank rounds on set. It has since become a loose saying with set armorers of "Don't Hexum it," as in don't misuse weapons loaded with blanks.
