- He carried a California Organ Donor's card. When he died, at least five people received transplants of his viable organs, including his heart.
- In 1988, dedicated fans of Jon-Erik Hexum started a Star Trek-based fan club named in his honor. The USS Hexum is based in suburban St. Louis (Belleville, IL) and continues to this day.

This episode aired 11/29/84, a month after his death. Werner Baecker spoke in the off-commentary of this scene from this later death drama after the scenes were filmed.
- Since his fatal accident fooling around with a prop gun with blanks, his death inspired new industrial rules around the safe handling of blank rounds on set. It has since become a loose saying with set armorers of "Don't Hexum it," as in don't misuse weapons loaded with blanks.
