And 52 years later, this small-scale gangster drama remains one of their best collaborations. Rough around the edges as it may be, Mean Streets pointed the way towards the various themes Scorsese and De Niro would probe throughout their careers, from the insecurity of violent men to the crippling effects of Catholic guilt.

The tandem of Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro is one of the most important and impeccable in the history of cinema. Together, they created some of the most influential films ever made. Without their collaborations in Taxi Driver, GoodFellas, and Killers of the Flower Moon, modern cinema and even fiction as a whole would be so much less and worse. Cinephiles and crime fiction enthusiasts have Mean Streets to thank for this irreplaceable duo.

Despite its importance to their careers and lives, Mean Streets is still one of Scorsese's and De Niro's most underrated and overlooked films. Granted, it's nowhere near as powerful as the likes of The King of Comedy or Raging Bull. Not helping is how it also suffers from a glaring lack of Joe Pesci. But even if this were the case, it's the film that quite literally made the filmmaker and actor the artists they are today.

Let’s start with Robert Altman’s 1992 “The Player” and its opening frenetic camera panning sequence: During that hilarious, farcical rapid-fire parade of studio-insider-wannabe sights and sounds, we see a quick pitch to make a film that is deemed as “Out of Africa meets Pretty Woman.” Over three decades later, we’ve actually witnessed a misguided facsimile of “Mean Streets” meets “Pretty Woman.”

Martin Scorsese (who may or may not be making a Frank Sinatra biopic soon) is our greatest living filmmaker. I don't think that's a controversial or even hyperbolic statement; it's just true. The man lives and breathes cinema, and he has one masterpiece after another to his name. But it all started with "Mean Streets." To be clear: "Mean Streets" was not Scorsese's first feature film. His debut film was 1967's "Who's That Knocking at My Door," which began as a student film before Scorsese reworked it into a feature. He followed that up in 1972 with "Boxcar Bertha," a crime flick produced by legendary B-movie auteur Roger Corman.

It was "Boxcar Bertha" that would lead directly to "Mean Streets." The story goes that when Scorsese's friend, mentor, and fellow director John Cassavetes saw "Boxcar Bertha," he told Scorsese: "You've just spent a year of your life making a piece of sh*t.

Alexandra Meachum, a local news anchor in Shreveport, Louisiana, is going viral for the Dragon Ball-inspired outfit she wore during her report about the late Akira Toriyama.

The official Dragon Ball Reddit forum captured Meachum's tribute to the late manga artist during Fox 33 News. The entire news segment can be found on the Ktal News website. In the video, Meachum is wearing an orange-colored shirt paired with a blue undershirt. The colors are a reference to Goku's martial arts uniform known as a gi. Now, most of these re-castings were for minor characters, and when a series is as good as The Sopranos is, it's hard for the minor discrepancies like these to matter all that much to the viewing experience. In fact, it's likely some viewers didn't even notice at all when the youngest of Tony's sisters changed actors, or that it wasn't Vito who came into the bakery the day Chris Moltisante shot the guy behind the counter, but a totally different guy altogether.

Following the news that beloved character actor Tom Wilkinson has passed away, come the passing of two more well-loved supporting players in TV and film. Richard Romanus, who played the role of loan shark Michael Longo in Mean Streets, passed away at the age of 80 on December 23rd. Meanwhile, Maurice Hines, the brother of Gregory Hines, has also passed away, also at 80.

Although Richard Romanus had a lengthy career that went back to the early ‘70s, it was his turn in Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets that remained his most memorable performance. It was his character who, after a run-in with Robert De Niro’s Johnny Boy (who owed Michael money), manned the car that drove up alongside Johnny Boy and Harvey Keitel’s Charlie, leading to the shooting of the loose cannon.

The actor passed away in a private hospital in Volos, Greece, on December 23, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In 1973’s Mean Streets, directed and co-written by Martin Scorsese, Romanus played Michael, the loan shark who clashed with ne’er-do-well Johnny Boy (Robert De Niro). On the red carpet for the BoxLunch Gala honoring Feeding America, where Harbour was named the Giving Ambassador, he expressed his excitement to return to the set of “Stranger Things.” He relayed a sense of urgency to get back to work, sharing that production could resume in just “a couple of days.”

A movie’s central character needn’t be someone we admire, but he should probably be someone we’re drawn to, someone we vibe with in sympathetic fascination, who we feel we know and understand even as he crosses over to the dark side. Few movies have lived out that dynamic more cathartically than the underworld dramas of Martin Scorsese.
