Saturnine German character actor, often seen in military or authoritarian roles. The son of a blacksmith, he initially studied law in Berlin prior to taking acting classes at the Max-Reinhardt-Seminar in 1923. On stage in Prague and Berlin, subsequently long-standing member of the Munich Kammerspiele (1930-39). His theatrical and film career took off after World War II, with leading roles in Berliner Ballade (1948) and Almirante Canaris (1954) (title role). Some international exposure in films by Hitchcock and Litvak and a prolific voice actor, the German dubbing voice for Charles Laughton, Humphrey Bogart, Spencer Tracy, Paul Muni and Clark Gable.

His partner for the last three decades of life, Max Wiener.

O.E. Hasse was called up to the Wehrmacht in 1944 and was luckily assigned to the Hauptfilmstelle of the Reichsluftwaffe.

He first appeared at theaters in Thale, Breslau and from 1930 till 1939 at the Kammerspiele in Munich, where he also worked as a stage director for the first time.

He already took for the first time part in the film classic "Der letzte Mann" (1924), directed by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, even if only as an extra. It took eight more years till he was able to gain a foothold in the film business.

In 1939 he moved to the German Theatre in Prague and shortened his name to O.E. instead of Otto Eduard.

Otto Eduard Hasse gained his first stage experiences at high-school at Kolmar together with his classmate Berta Drews.

Since 1981, the German Academy of Arts donates an O.E. Hasse Prize to benefit young actors.

He began his acting career at the beginning of the 20's at a layman theater and intensified his acting intention with the attendance at Max Reinhardt's acting school.

The actor O.E. Hasse is well known today in the first place for his role in the movie "Canaris" (1954), but his filmography shows a whole string of interesting movies in which he took part in Germany, France and the USA.
