From Bawarchi in 1972 to Sautela Bhai in 1996, A.K.Hangal remained a part of Rajesh Khanna's films as the solo male lead hero. Hangal acted in 16 films with Kaka.

Despite being involved in over 200 films, he was saddled with financial difficulties in the last years of his life and was even unable to pay his medical bills.

The government of India bestowed upon him with its third highest civilian honor, Padma Bhushan, in 2006.
