Superman and Lex Luthor will be back for Man of Tomorrow, and it looks like the Justice Gang will ride again, too. Both Isabela Merced and Edi Gathegi responded to director James Gunn's announcement of the film on social media yesterday, indicating that both are on board for another adventure in the new DC Comics universe. Man of Tomorrow will be released on July 9, 2027.
Merced, who plays the winged, mace-wielding Hawkgirl, reposted Gunn's announcement on her Instagram account, adding "See you soon." Gathegi, who played the sardonic high-tech genius Mr. Terrific, reposted Deadline's article about the film, asking, "Where does the story go next?" Spoilers for "Peacemaker" season 2 to follow.
Christopher "Peacemaker" Smith (John Cena) may have helped foil an alien invasion, but he's still the butt of jokes in the superhero community. In the "Peacemaker" season 2 premiere, Peacemaker interviews to join the "Justice Gang." However, neither Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), nor the team's moneyman, Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn), are impressed by him.
The interviews take place in an abandoned storefront labeled "Krank's Toys." That's not a real brand, but it does have some DC Universe history behind it. The cartoon series "The Batman," which premiered in 2004, featured the villain Cosmo Krank/The Toymaker (Patton Oswalt), the former owner of Krank's Toys turned super-villain.

Like any James Gunn superhero project, "Peacemaker" season 2 is filled to the brim with fun little allusions and Easter eggs. Gunn, being a guy who has no problem putting ultra-obscure DC characters like Weasel (Sean Gunn), Ratcatcher II (Daniela Melchior) — or, for that matter, Peacemaker (John Cena) — front and center, some of the figures who exist on the periphery of his stories can be outright peculiar. One such character is a supervillain who's actually quite mighty, but incredibly easy to miss.
Near the end of "Peacemaker" season 2, episode 1 — titled "The Ties That Grind" — Peacemaker, aka Christopher Smith, finally decides to venture deeper into the parallel universe he accidentally discovered some time ago.

Batman is one of the most resourceful and popular superheroes in pop culture, but even he is afraid of one DC character, who was born on August 29. The Caped Crusader has spoken about how powerful and nearly invincible Plastic Man is many times and has welcomed the former crook to the Justice League.
Plastic Man is known for his malleability and quirky personality. The superhero has been an ally to Batman but has also betrayed him a few times, especially in the famous Justice League story, Tower of Babel. The superhero is extremely volatile in terms of physiology, giving him all sorts of abilities and making him a great ally.

James Gunn has finally broken his silence on how one of his former Guardians of the Galaxy stars fits into the Dcu. Gunn took part in a recent interview to chat about Peacemaker Season 2, and he was asked if Chris Pratt has a place in the Dcu, specifically as Batman. Gunn ruled out Pratt ever playing The Dark Knight, simply by saying, “As Batman? No.” However, he did confirm that there’s a place for him in another role: “As something else? Yes.” The duo previously teamed up for all three Guardians of the Galaxy movies, where Pratt plays the legendary Star Lord.
Gunn also said that Pratt “would love to do something at DC.

James Gunn's Superman movie has introduced the Justice Gang, a group of metahumans under Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn) who want to do good. But, according to the DC filmmaker, not everyone is part of this team, including a staple in the DC Universe that many fans are keen to see return following the reboot.
A fan noticed that Batman's existence wasn't teased in Peacemaker Season 2 and wondered if it was because Gunn didn't want to include him during that scene that retconned the old timeline. In reality, he was never involved to begin with. According to Gunn, Batman isn't part of the Justice Gang, but it was vague...

Chris Marrs Piliero’s riotous treatment of the dangers of deepfake technology begins with a helpful definition of apophenia, which is “the tendency to perceive a connection or meaningful pattern between unrelated or random things,” which suggests that Appofeniacs itself will spool through a series of events which have ultimately no connective tissue. This is not the case, as the degrees of separation between the various characters will eventually be revealed as being a smaller number than first thought.

This article contains spoilers for "Peacemaker" season 2, episode 1, "The Ties That Grind."
Following up on an acclaimed superhero show's first season is one thing, but "Peacemaker" season 2 also has to tackle a move to a new cinematic universe. "Peacemaker" season 1 stood on the outskirts of Zack Snyder's DC Extended Universe (Dceu), while season 2 takes the action to James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe (Dcu). This means that Gunn had to find a way to both recapture the magic of the first season and connect the show to his grand vision.

As James Gunn brings Peacemaker into his new Dcu with Season 2, he’s clearing up some canonical confusion for fans.
Following this week’s season premiere ‘The Ties That Grind’, the DC Studios boss explained that he doesn’t plan to retcon Season 1, despite subbing in Isabela Merced‘s Hawkgirl and Nathan Fillion‘s Green Lantern for two Dceu characters featured in the first season finale.
“No, unfortunately I’d have to change too many little things throughout Season 1, and it would cost too much money,” he told TV Insider. “And I’d rather just give that money to a few more CGI shots of superheroes.
“But I think that we deal with it. We say, canon is really Creature Commandos, Superman, Peacemaker Season 2. I’d love for people to watch Season 1. Obviously, we’re changing that one thing, but we’re not gonna go back and reshoot all of...

In the original Justice League International (Jli) comics, Maxwell Lord served as the team’s wealthy and charismatic founder and benefactor. He operated behind the scenes, using his business acumen, connections, and financial resources to establish and oversee the Justice League following the Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Beyond funding the team, Lord acted as its manager, often playing the role of a cunning negotiator and deal-maker, whose actions leaned more toward morally ambiguous than outright villainous.
Across Infinite Crisis and Countdown to Infinite Crisis, Maxwell Lord’s backstory was revised to portray him as a far more sinister figure, using his position within the Jli to secretly monitor and manipulate superheroes.

Peacemaker star Steve Agee has been by James Gunn’s side since a random Sunday night in 2008.
Of course, this was long before Gunn became the co-ceo of DC Studios and the writer-director of Superman (2025), The Suicide Squad (2021) and the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. At the time, Gunn had one feature film on his resumé, and he was the co-host of VH1’s reality show, Scream Queens, alongside Agee’s friend from the Saw franchise, Shawnee Smith. In time, Smith needed a plus-one for a Sunday dinner party of sorts that James’ brother Sean Gunn was throwing, so she asked Agee to buffer. He then quickly fell in with the Gunn brothers and the other guests in attendance such as Michael Rooker and Nathan Fillion.

Peacemaker Season 2: The Villain Storyline James Gunn Scrapped Before Filming ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
John Cena’s Peacemaker was set for a very different story in its second season. When James Gunn first outlined the show’s direction, the focus was on a group of white supremacist superheroes hunting Peacemaker down. Their reason was simple: they saw him as a traitor for killing his father, the White Dragon, their ally. But Gunn felt the idea echoed too closely to the first season, so he changed direction before the scripts were locked.

As Peacemaker returns to HBO Max for Season 2, one of the ’11th Street Kids’ is worried about attracting the wrong audience.
Freddie Stroma, who plays Vigilante/Adrian Chase, admitted he’s nervous about young Superman fans being introduced to the mature superhero series now that’s part of James Gunn‘s new Dcu.
“It’s weird because it’s a new universe, but it doesn’t really affect us as much,” he told Discussing Film. “I keep thinking about the fact that Superman has come out, and then, if younger viewers are going to come in and see that first episode, I don’t know what they’re going to think.”
Stroma continued, “So, I keep thinking about that with the universe change. I guess that’s just part of it. For us, it’s kind of business as usual. We’re the Peacemaker lot and we do pretty R-rated stuff.

After years of waiting, season 2 of Peacemaker is here. The highly reviewed and shockingly amazing TV show is back with Christopher Smith/Peacemaker (played by John Cena), Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), Agent Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), and the rest of the crew. And, thanks to the plethora of trailers and teasers that were released, we can expect a lot of the same comedy and depth as the first season.
One of the things people should know is that Peacemaker is part of James Gunn’s Dcu. That was probably clear after seeing Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn), and Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) interviewing Christopher Smith to be part...

James Gunn’s freshman outing was a comedic adrenaline rush. However, Peacemaker season 2 is even better, thanks to a career-best performance from John Cena. He brings surprising shades of poignant heart to the role, as this DC Studios entry finds a clever “glitch in the matrix,” deepening our understanding of a conflicted anti-hero.
Cena’s Chris Smith, aka Peacemaker, invites the audience to soften and sit within the gray area of his moral ambiguity. Once a one-note character in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, he now carries the heartfelt weight of his past actions while struggling to come to terms with his childhood.

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major plot developments in Season 2, Episode 1 of “Peacemaker,” currently streaming on HBO Max.
When James Gunn’s “Peacemaker” premiered in 2022, the spin-off series for his 2021 feature film “The Suicide Squad” stood apart with its blue-collar, human-scaled, TV-ma-rated lens on a superhero story. The first season followed the titular lead, aka Christopher Smith (John Cena), as he transformed from an emotionally stunted, morally flexible killing machine into a complex hero filled with remorse for his past bad deeds. Along the way, the show deployed prolific profanity and extravagant blood and gore, but more to the point, it approached its characters not as high-achieving heroes but as struggling fuck-ups barely scraping by in the armpit of society.
For Season 2, “Peacemaker” turns the volume up even further on the adult content, with easily the most full-frontal nudity ever assembled in a live-action DC comics adaptation.

Almost 30 years ago, two Shakespeare adaptations released only months apart from each other, both capturing a distinctly ’90s vibe at opposite ends of the spectrum. Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet appealed to mainstream tastes, while Troma’s Tromeo and Juliet delivered a much wilder adaptation that only Troma could.
Tromeo and Juliet checks off the usual transgressive humor and outlandish, oft gory gags from which Troma built its reputation. Still, it also dares to give the star-crossed lovers the happy ending Shakespeare never afforded them. The genre-leaning rom-com marks the first screenwriting credit for filmmaker James Gunn (Superman) and serves as a blueprint for the trademark blend of rampant...

While Peacemaker may have existed in the comics from the 1960s but James Gunn claims that his version is a spiritual sequel to the lowest-rated film of his career, Super. Starring Rainn Wilson in a dark-comical role, Super was written and directed by Gunn in his pre-Marvel and DC days.
However, recently, the movie has started gaining some recognition among niche fans, despite its generally obscure status. In a sit-down session between Wilson and Gunn for Interview Magazine, the filmmaker asked the actor, “You see where Peacemaker is a spiritual successor to Super, right?”
While it was not immediately obvious to Wilson (as might be the case with some fans), one can definitely see the connection once Gunn starts breaking it down. Read on to find out how.

James Gunn recently confirmed that the upcoming Peacemaker season 2 will be a direct sequel to 2025’s Superman and teased that it could be as unhinged as The Boys. During a conversation with The Office star Rainn Wilson for Interview Magazine, Gunn revealed that the second season will double down on the profanity.
It’s a sequel to Superman. HBO, they’ve always kind of let us do what we wanted. Remember, HBO has had a lot of nudity in their shows. They’re not unknown to nudity.
Gunn made the above statement in response to Wilson’s surprise at the amount of nudity in the second season, which is set to include a dance o*gy.
As a result, the sophomore installment is likely to be a wild ride with its nudity and profanity likely to rival The Boys, and its unhinged dance o*gy could even dwarf the shock...

Guardians of the Galaxy star Sean Gunn has been cast as the Dcu's Maxwell Lord, and showed up in Superman for a cameo role (he'll next appear briefly in Peacemaker season 2). Crucially for this shared world, Lord is funding his own superhero team, dubbed the "Justice Gang."
That makes the character incredibly important to the Dcu's future, and Gunn says he's excited to follow Lord throughout the vastly different genres and corners of the DC Universe this relaunched franchise will explore in the coming years. Superman was a PG-13 blockbuster, whereas Peacemaker is very R-rated, so he's already had a taste of that.
For Gunn, this provides him and other actors with the opportunity to play these characters in new ways as they bounce from project to project.

In Peacemaker season 1, John Cena’s foul-mouthed anti-hero couldn’t resist taking a jab at Green Arrow, tossing out a joke about the emerald archer being lame. It was a moment from the show, equal parts hilarious and cutting, while also hinting at larger concepts. However, that name-drop, definitely confirmed that Green Arrow was actually running around somewhere in the Dceu?
Now, things are about to get even more interesting in Peacemaker season 2. The shiny-helmeted mercenary is officially set to make the leap into the brand-new Dcu via a pocket dimension twist. We've already seen the Og Dceu Peacemaker be confronted by his Dcu doppleganger, but does that mean that Green Arrow also has a Dcu ringer?
James Gunn recently addressed this notion on the Peacemaker season 1 rewatch podcast, stating, "I don't know. I'm not willing to say yet. We don't really know. We don't have a Green Arrow as...

Maxwell Lord made his Dcu debut in “Superman” and, though the character has a long history of being a supervillain, Sean Gunn is not letting that completely guide his take on the character. According to the actor, he’s “a lot more nuanced.”
Back in 2023, James Gunn — Sean Gunn’s older brother and now the co-head of DC Studios — posted about the character on Instagram, arguing that “calling Maxwell Lord a villain seems reductionist,” and that his depiction in the “Justice League International” comic “made him one of my favorite characters.”
Speaking to TheWrap at Fan Expo Chicago on Sunday, Sean Gunn noted that he’s not strictly pulling from comic versions of the character, but readily echoed his brother’s sentiment.

With the premiere of “Peacemaker” Season 2 this week, Sean Gunn will have three projects under his belt in his brother James Gunn’s new DC Universe. And, according to the actor, the clear trend seems to be that this cinematic world will be storyteller-oriented.
Sean Gunn made his Dcu debut as a voice in “Creature Commandos,” the animated series that premiered at the end of 2024. In July, he appeared in live action, debuting as Maxwell Lord in the briefest of moments in “Superman.” Now, he returns as the character in “Peacemaker,” as Lord continues to recruit for the Justice Gang, who fans also met in “Superman.”
Speaking to TheWrap at FanExpo Chicago on Sunday, Sean admitted that fans are “not going to see a ton of him” in the series, as the character is still slowly being seeded in. But he himself has now seen enough of his brother’s...

Peacemaker showrunner and DC Studios boss James Gunn thinks the last few episodes of Peacemaker season 2 are going to set the internet on fire.
Speaking to Brandon Davis of PhaseHero, Gunn shared that he won't even let his publicist see the last three installments.
"There's a lot of major twists and turns in the last three episodes. And even though I've only sent the first five to a select few, things still get out. Things got out already, [if] people want to search, they can be spoiled on purpose. But I really don't want what's in those last three episodes to be spoiled and so I'm keeping them close to the chest. I won't even let my publicist know, that's the God's honest truth."
Based on what's previously been revealed about John Cena's titular hero and his cross-dimensional season 2 adventure, what do you think the big reveal will be in the last few eps?...

While "Superman" served as the grand cinematic opening for the new Dcu under the leadership of DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, the highly anticipated second season of the HBO Max original series "Peacemaker" is the next story in "Chapter One: Gods and Monsters." Although Gunn first made the jump from Marvel Studios to DC Films with "The Suicide Squad" and the first season of "Peacemaker" shortly after, both of those projects were produced under the previous DC Extended Universe regime, with select elements carried over into the rebooted Dcu. Naturally, the sequence in the season one finale featuring the Dceu's Justice League is not canon in the new Dcu, but what to make of the events that transpired in Gunn's "The Suicide Squad?"

However, there appears to be one glimmer of hope for any holdouts on Gunn changing his mind, thanks to the recent digital release of Superman.

Plot: In season 2, Peacemaker discovers an alternate world where life is everything he wishes it could be. But this discovery also forces him to face his traumatic past and take the future into his own hands.
Review: When the first season of Peacemaker premiered three years ago, it was an impressive and unexpectedly solid addition to the hit-or-miss Dceu. With a quick second-season pick-up, Peacemaker‘s future was questioned when James Gunn and Peter Safran were announced as the co-CEOs of DC Studios. With Gunn and Safran plotting a ten-year outline for the new Dcu, it was confusing how Peacemaker would exist in both cinematic universes. Would the show employ a multiverse like Marvel, or would it be a new approach? The answer will be left for you to figure out when the new season hits HBO Max, but having seen the first five episodes, I can say with confidence...

Peacemaker Season 2 is nearly upon us, but critics have already settled on a verdict for James Gunn's raunchy superhero series. The return of John Cena's beloved Dcu hero to HBO Max seems to have been more than worth the wait. After Superman unveiled the Dcu to the world earlier this summer, Peacemaker looks to keep the momentum going with a stellar debut on Rotten Tomatoes.
As of this writing, Peacemaker has a 100% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 23 reviews. The perfect rating comes after audiences had to wait over three years for the second season, which now takes place in the rebooted DC Universe. Peacemaker returns to HBO Max on Thursday, August 21. It should be noted that the press only had access to the first five episodes of the second season. The final three installments are being withheld until they come out on the streaming service later this year.
