Yellowstone used to be the king of TV’s Wild West, and now, it’s just a dusty tumbleweed refusing to roll off-screen. What started as a gritty neo-Western juggernaut with Kevin Costner growling patriarchal wisdom turned into a long, drawn-out ranch soap opera that forgot when to quit.
With Season 5 split in two like an overcooked steak and stretched thinner than Beth Dutton’s patience, Taylor Sheridan seems determined to milk every drop of cowboy drama. But here’s the kicker, John Dutton’s dead, the ranch is spiraling, and the narrative? Flatter than a prairie.
While Sheridan says there’s more story to tell, fans are side-eyeing the screen like, “Really, bro?” Sorry, Yellowstone, even your best horse can’t outrun stale storytelling. And Kevin Costner? He may have left, but he’s still riding off with the last laugh.

Kevin Costner just opened up about the tragic stories he discovered for his new docuseries, Kevin Costner's The West. Kevin is one of the most accomplished actors in the entertainment industry. Kevin Costner couldn't believe the heartbreaking stories he learned while making Kevin Costner's The West.

Daniel Day-Lewis Wearing Lincoln Costume On Set (Photo Credit – Prime Video)
Daniel Day-Lewis doesn’t sign on to a film unless he sees something worth his full immersion. So when Steven Spielberg had his heart set on him for a long-planned film about Abraham Lincoln, the path didn’t prove to be smooth. Spielberg had been circling the idea of a Lincoln biopic for years, but getting the actor to agree took far more than a simple offer.
Steven Spielberg’s Early Pitch Failed To Impress Daniel Day-Lewis
Back when the project was still finding its shape, Spielberg approached Day-Lewis with a version of the script that wasn’t yet rooted in the historical depth it would later have. It wasn’t Tony Kushner’s version, and it wasn’t based on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s detailed biography. The script was completely different or in simple words, it was a less focused attempt.

John Dutton actor Kevin Costner opens up on the Yellowstoneending, and what he thinks the characters deserved. Premiering in 2018 and airing for five seasons, Yellowstone season 5, part 2 marked the show's conclusion, airing on December 15, 2024. The series' final had a polarized reception, as Costner controversially left Yellowstone, and protagonist John Dutton was killed off the show. Costner's exit was due to myriad reasons, with a major one being his desire to shoot his Western passion project, Horizon: An American Saga.
Costner and historian Doris Kearns Goodwin sat down with Et to discuss their new docuseries, The West, which premieres on History Channel on May 26. In their discussion, Costner addressed the future of his ambitious Horizon project, his legacy in the Western genre, and, most interestingly, how he feels the Dutton family should have ended up in Yellowstone. Costner complimented the show's ability to beautifully capture "modern-day ranching", but acknowledged that the...

Before the bunkhouse drama hit the fan, Yellowstone was galloping full-speed toward Season 6 at least, that’s what Taylor Sheridan had in mind. The Mvp behind the Dutton dynasty wasn’t ready to hang up his cleats just yet. But then came Kevin Costner’s dramatic exit, and the entire franchise took a sharp turn off the ranch trail.
What was supposed to be another explosive season turned into a farewell tour, all thanks to off-screen tensions and scheduling clashes. So, what exactly did Sheridan have planned before Costner quit?

Yellowstone wasn’t supposed to end with Season 5. Not by a long shot. Creator Taylor Sheridan reportedly had plans for three more seasons before Kevin Costner quit.
So what happened? Drama, of course. Behind the scenes, Sheridan and Costner clashed over contracts and filming schedules.

Kevin Costner has held a lifelong passion for exploring America’s wild west story and while ‘Horizon’ may not have been all that, he’s promising that his latest project will slap. Maybe not literally, but “shock” and “captivate” are words that have been used to describe it.
Kevin Costner’s Eight-part Series Will Explore the Price That America Paid For Westward Expansion
“What do we see when we think of the West?” is the question ‘Yellowstone’ alum Kevin Costner wants us to ask so that his docuseries can answer.
At 70, the Oscar winning actor and director is still as bent as ever towards his goal of exploring the history of the American west, and he gets to do this again through a eight-part docuseries, titled ‘Kevin Costner’s The West.’
In addition to being the executive producer, Costner also appears in front of the cameras as the host of the new show.

Stephen King is one of the most prolific writers in the contemporary literature world. Known for his grueling horror and suspenseful mystery stories and novels, his work has inspired countless film and TV adaptations. The ubiquity of King's presence in the media cannot be understated and insight can be gained into his creative process by examining the media he consumes and resonates with.
Many great writers derive motivation and inspiration for their work from engaging with the art of others, something that King is adamant about in his own craft. King has said, “If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that.” Keeping a commitment to reading might seem like an intimidating task, especially with the inherent business of modern-day life. Luckily, Stephen King has plenty of recommendations to help with starting a reading routine.

The recent era of Steven Spielberg's career has been punctuated by a turn toward more adult and dramatic films, often centering around real-world political events that serve as a perfect allegory for modern issues. Starting with the immense success of movies like Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List, his historical films like Bridge of Spies, The Post, and Munich represent a quieter and more contemplative side of one of the best directors of all time.
Arguably Steven Spielberg's best piece of historical fiction came with his fantastic 2012 drama Lincoln, a biopic centering on the 16th President's attempts to simultaneously end the Civil War and pass the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, forcing the end of the Confederacy while also securing the end of slavery in America. Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have stepped away from creative control of the James Bond franchise, placing Amazon MGM Studios in charge of shaping its future. Under a new agreement, the studio will lead development on upcoming Bond films, marking a departure from the long-standing family oversight that has defined the series for more than six decades.
Wilson, who has been involved in the franchise for nearly 60 years, announced his retirement from filmmaking, stating that he will now focus on art and charitable projects. Broccoli, while remaining active in Hollywood, has shifted her focus to other productions, including a Broadway musical and an adaptation of Doris Kearns Goodwin’s memoir.
The announcement follows a prolonged period of uncertainty surrounding the next installment in the series. Since No Time to Die concluded Daniel Craig’s run in 2021, no script, director, or lead actor has been confirmed. Although a character bible has circulated within the studio,...

Well, if you’re reading this, it means that you’ve survived yet another presidential election.
You might be thrilled with last night’s results, or you might be banging your head against a wall, wondering how you’re gonna survive the next four years.
Either way, at least we can all take solace in the fact that the quadrennial barrage of panhandling text messages has now come to an end.
(Dreamworks Pictures/20th Century Fox)
And now that you can once again turn on your TV without being bombarded by mudslinging political ads, what better time to revisit some of the best presidential biopics?
Politicians and pollsters might tell you they know what the future holds, but that picture is always a murky one.
Thankfully, we can always look to America’s past for encouraging reminders of challenges we’ve overcome and the heroes who have risen to the occasion.

However, those plans have shifted.

Two former U.S. presidents, one former first lady and noted historians, authors, academics and journalists gathered Saturday at the Academy Museum for a History Talks event that looked at moments of conflict in the nation’s past to bring perspective to the polarization of the present.
The 2010s were “a decade of indignation,” said David Brooks, New York Times political and cultural columnist. “That decade is now giving way – people want something more joyful.”
The event hosted by A+E Networks’ History Channel featured Q&As with President Barack Obama, who engaged playfully with Malcolm Gladwell, and President George W. Bush and first lady Laura Bush. That pair opened the half-day event with a wide-ranging conversation conducted by their daughter, “Today” co-host Jenna Bush Hager.

Update, with response statements: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has dropped out of the presidential race, sort of, leaving his rocky Independent campaign behind and aligning the iconically Democrat name with the Republican party of Donald Trump.
“In an honest system, I believe that I would have won the election,” he said today, running counter to polls but sounding very Trumpian, with talks of “sham” primaries and a “palace coup” against Joe Biden. He castigated Vice President and presidential candidate Kamala Harris for not yet granting media interviews, a common Republican talking point in recent weeks.
Kennedy didn’t quite end his campaign, but says he’s merely suspending it and will remain on ballots in some battleground states. While at one point insisting quixotically that it’s still possible he might end up in the White House, he also said, “In my heart, I no longer believe I have a...

Kamala Harris leaves Chicago today with energy and enthusiasm that reached a fever pitch on the final night of the Democratic National Convention, something that would have sounded too-good-to-be-true just over a month ago.
Her speech was biographical, centrist and patriotic, with delegates waving small and large flags on the floor of the United Center. That followed other displays of patriotism throughout the evening, including the appearance of members of Congress who are veterans and the occasional chants of “USA! USA!”
“It was the most Republican Democratic Convention we have ever seen,” Ryan Wiggins, chief of staff of The Lincoln Project, the political action group founded by moderates and conservatives to counter Donald Trump. She compared the exuberance to the GOP convention in 1980 in Detroit, where Ronald Reagan was nominated.

Exclusive: Bryan Cranston is adding a little vocal help to historian Doris Kearns Goodwin’s next book.
Kearns Goodwin is releasing An Unfinished Love Story: A Personal History of the 1960s on April 16 and the Breaking Bad star is providing some narration for the audiobook version.
Cranston will read the letters that Doris’s late husband Richard “Dick” Goodwin, a writer and presidential advisor, wrote to family and friends when he was in his twenties.
The book weaves together biography, memoir, and history. It will also feature historic archival recordings from speeches from JFK, Lbj, and Robert Kennedy.
The couple got to know Cranston when he was preparing to star as Lbj in Robert Schenkkan’s play All the Way. They also appeared together on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in 2018.

“Sic semper tyrannis!” With these words John Wilkes Booth fled Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. after shooting Abraham Lincoln in the head with a 44 caliber derringer on April 14, 1865, altering the course of history and prompting a 12-day manhunt that ended when Sgt. Steven Spielberg's Lincoln exaggerates battle scenes, with a Civil War historian rating one scene a 4/10 for historical accuracy. Despite the film's artistic liberties, Lincoln is generally considered historically accurate in portraying Lincoln's presidency and the passage of Thirteenth Amendment. The film is focused on political maneuvering, with less emphasis on realistic Civil War battles, and Daniel Day-Lewis's portrayal of Lincoln is highly regarded and well-researched.
Steven Spielberg's Lincoln exaggerates certain aspects of its battle scenes, according to a Civil War historian. Released in 2012, the biopic is based on the 2005 biography, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns, and follows the final four months of the former president's life, focusing on his fight to abolish slavery by passing the Thirteenth Amendment. The film's greatness is unquestionable, winning Daniel Day-Lewis his third Academy Award for Best Actor and receiving 11 more nominations, including Best Picture. The film's historical accuracy,...

“Churchill said about Fdr that it was like opening your first bottle of champagne to encounter him. There was such sparkle,” says leading presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, executive producer of Fdr, a three-part documentary series about America’s longest-serving — and possibly most effervescent — president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Roosevelt held office from 1933 until his death in 1945 and famously led the nation out of the Great Depression and toward victory in World War II. The sociable, naturally optimistic Harvard grad comes to life in vivid dramatizations based on letters and diaries. Context is provided by archival footage, interviews with historians and scholars, and prized documents — like a draft of his speech after the Pearl Harbor attack, where he crossed out “world history” and wrote “infamy.” The doc (premiering May 29 on the History Channel) also looks at Fdr’s formative years, including as a spunky young boy in elite Hyde Park, New York.

Franklin D. Roosevelt is one of the most influential presidents in U.S. history: He ended the Great Depression through his radical New Deal programs, some of which are still in use today; led the U.S. through the bulk of WWII; unified the American public in unprecedented ways through his Fireside Chats; was elected four times; and was the first openly disabled president. So, when the History Channel announced the three-part presidential docuseries, Fdr, promising to tell the untold story, expectations were understandably high. Unfortunately, the series, which is co-produced by Bradley Cooper and based on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s Leadership: In Turbulent Times, fails to meet those expectations.

Get on the phone with Ron Bernstein and he’ll happily share his views on who’s up and down at the studios — and inevitably, he’ll talk about his latest deals. On a recent call, he hyped the Redstone family power saga by James Stewart and Rachel Abrams, “Unscripted: The Epic Battle for a Hollywood Media Empire”; sure enough, within weeks it sold to producer Steven Paul, who’s developing the juicy Shakespearean drama for television.
Bernstein is Hollywood’s most respected media rights agent. He’s repped the source material for the Coen brothers’ Best Picture winner “No Country for Old Men” (Cormac McCarthy), Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln” (Doris Kearns Goodwin), Danny Boyle’s “Jobs” (Walter Isaacson), and Clint Eastwood’s “Richard Jewell” (Marie Brenner).

Kevin Costner has landed a new series amid uncertainty surrounding his “Yellowstone” future. The actor will host and executive produce “Kevin Costner’s The West” (working title) for History Channel, the network announced Wednesday. Historian Doris Kearns Goodwin will also executive produce.
The eight-episode documentary series explores the clichés and myths of the “Wild West” and features various perspectives that “capture the spirit of opportunity, adventure and peril through the diverse, complex characters and untold stories that defined the era and continue to shape our country today.”
“I am in love with history. I love the rich, heroic and harrowing stories of the West. The people and their stories have always held a fascination for me, but there’s an urgency today to put those times and the men and women who we think we know in perspective, in the context of their times, without judgement,” said Costner in a statement.

Tony Kushner has worked with Steven Spielberg a whopping four times on four completely different movies: 2005’s thorny political thriller “Munich;” 2012’s historical biography “Lincoln;” 2021’s epic musical “West Side Story;” and most recently, 2022’s autobiographical “The Fabelmans,” the story of how Steven Spielberg became Steven Spielberg. Only one other screenwriter, David Koepp, has collaborated with the filmmaker as often (and they had a fifth project in pre-production that fell apart at the eleventh hour). Kushner and Spielberg’s ongoing collaboration is perhaps the most important of either artist’s career.
So sitting down with Kushner to talk about “The Fabelmans” and his journey with Spielberg, it was easy to feel intimidated. (One rarely gets to talk to a Pulitzer Prize winner.) But Kushner was warm and open about their collaboration and its difficulties – including where they might be headed next.

Paramount Global’s attempt to sell publisher Simon & Schuster to the owner of Penguin Random House has been blocked, a Washington D.C. judge ordered on Monday. The companies replied that they’re evaluating options and are looking to request an appeal.
“Upon review of the extensive record and careful consideration of the parties’ arguments, the Court finds that the United States has shown that ‘the effect of [the proposed merger] may be substantially to lessen competition’ in the market for the U.S. publishing rights to anticipated top-selling books,” U.S. Circuit Court Judge Florence Y. Pan wrote in a two-page order.
In response to the order, a Penguin Random House rep called the move a “setback” and pledged to appeal. “We strongly disagree with today’s decision, which is an unfortunate setback for readers and authors, and we will immediately request an expedited appeal,...

Exclusive: Ashton Gleckman, the director behind Holocaust documentary We Shall Not Die Now, is turning his attention to John F. Kennedy in a new docuseries.
The 22-year old director and composer, who was described by famed composer Hans Zimmer as “the boy with bat ears,” has teamed with RadicalMedia on Kennedy, a series about the 35th President of the United States.
The project, which RadicalMedia is producing alongside Gleckman’s Blackbird Pictures, is designed for a 2023 premiere to mark the 60th anniversary of JFK’s assassination. The companies are in talks with streaming platforms and networks.
The series will seek to share Kennedy’s legacy with a new generation, including his early years, his time in the war, his journey onto the political scene, and his thousand-day presidency.
Kennedy, which is nearing completion, features never-before-seen archival footage, photographs, and audio recordings of Kennedy.

Acclaimed presidential biographer Doris Kearns Goodwin, who has also exec-produced series on George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, is often asked which of those men she wishes could be here today. “In some ways, I think Teddy would be the best,” she says of the 26th president (1901–09). “You need somebody fiery who is fighting for fairness, who could be entertaining. And he had all those clever statements that would be perfect on Twitter.” The two-part special Theodore Roosevelt does justice to the man who gave the White House its name. His journey from sickly, home-schooled son of a beloved New York City philanthropist to relentless leader who once delivered an 84-minute address while bleeding from a gunshot wound to the chest is made vivid. Interviews with Goodwin and other historians combine with scripted scenes that star Rufus ...

This weekend we have a holiday and what better way than to fill that extra day with brand new television? Time to catch up, recharge, and maybe watch that new “Theodore Roosevelt” documentary. It’s what America would have wanted. After the break, the new shows keep coming, from a fictionalized account of the Sex Pistols to the return of “The Boys,” to a spinoff of “Nancy Drew” that seems very, very different. It’s almost Too much good TV.

For some reason, out of the crop of new movies headed to Amazon Prime Video this month, many of them are associated with the 1980s. Not just movies from the Me Decade, although there are certainly a handful of classics from the Reagan era, but also movies that feel like they could have been made in that period – including a creature feature about rampaging dragons and a music-world spoof worthy of the Zaz team.
There’s also, of course, one of Steven Spielberg’s most powerful recent films and a 90s staple too. Either way, this month is best enjoyed with solid access to a time machine of your choosing (DeLorean not required but obviously encouraged).
