To understand is to analyze, control, and put things in order. You must accept a certain amount of disorder and have courage, because you don't know where you are going. I think cinema is good for incarnating the parts of the mind that you cannot explain. It is also better, I think, to adapt a short story for this reason than a whole 'roman' - it becomes 'trop litteraire' and this makes sometimes the mystery disappear. It was a challenge for me because I don't speak very well English, you see, and it helped me to let go and trust my wonderful actors.

[on 'Adore', a film based on Doris Lessing's novella 'The Grandmothers'] Doris Lessing escaped taboos, perhaps by ignoring them. She believed in what is natural. And that is how she wrote - convincing you gently, not with violence and paroxysms, but with humor. Here, it is about desire and how it can be stronger than everything else. I think that makes the story quite moving and says something about the human condition, because it is all very mixed: there is sexuality but also something very soft and sincere to it.
