During the Nazi occupation of France in World War II, Dulac used her diplomatic skills on behalf of the Cinematheque Francaise in assuring that many film prints seized by the Germans amid the turbulence were eventually returned for preservation.

Dulac made the first surrealist film ever, "La coquille et le clergyman" (1928), but she was insulted and the movie rejected by the male-oriented group of French intellectuals that attended its premiere, among them its scriptwriter Antonin Artaud.
