The only star of the "Carry On..." films who, after starting in the series, appeared in every film subsequently. His first "Carry On..." was Carry on Matron (1972) and his last Carry on Emmannuelle (1978). He also appeared in the one-off Com Jeito Vai... Colombo (1992), but often criticized the film when speaking about it in conversation.

Spent his last years in semi-retirement on the Isle of Wight with his partner, the actress Vivien Russell.

A memorial service was held for him at St. Paul's Church, Covent Garden on 5th June 2009.

He both directed and starred in a production of 'A Sting in the Tale' at the Shanklin Theatre on the Isle of White.

In 1946 he was appearing in 'Hi There' for the Combined Services Entertainment Unit.

His brother Bill Roberton was a theatre director who directed him in the "Carry On London" stage show which ran at London's Victoria Palace from October 1973 to March 1975.

His act in the "Carry On" films is now often condemned as politically incorrect and offensive.
