- Gaunt character actor, a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in Vienna. Donath had a distinguished career on the stages of Vienna and Berlin, before leaving Nazi Germany in 1933. He arrived in Hollywood via Switzerland and England. In films from 1942, he was often typecast as Nazis. Donath was briefly blacklisted in the 1950's for alleged left-wing connections, but resumed steady television work in 1957 for the remaining ten years of his life.
- When Hitler came to power in 1933, he returned to Vienna and was active there in theater and film until the Anschluss in 1938.
- Donath graduated from Vienna's Academy of Dramatic Art and became a prominent actor on the stage in Berlin.
- Donath played the father of entertainer Al Jolson (Larry Parks) in the two biopics The Jolson Story (1946) and Jolson Sings Again (1949), although he was less than 15 years older than Parks as Jolson.
- In 1955 he appeared in Der Biberpelz at the Deutsches Theater in New York.
