Godfather of A.J. Lambert, who is the daughter of Nancy Sinatra and granddaughter of Frank Sinatra. Darren was a close friend of Sinatra and his family.

He was originally not given the Moondoggie character in Columbia Pictures' Maldosamente Ingênua (1959) because the role required two songs to sing and Darren had not proven himself a capable enough singer. On his own, he cut a single with the studio's recording subsidiary, Colpix Records, which charted. Columbia changed its mind and gave him the role despite the fact that he couldn't surf and was a weak swimmer. He nevertheless became a huge teen idol and reprised the Moondoggie role in both Férias no Havaí (1961) and Roma, Convite ao Amor (1963), all with different Gidgets: Sandra Dee, Deborah Walley and Cindy Carol.

He is the only actor to appear in all three "Gidget" films (as the same character): Maldosamente Ingênua (1959), Férias no Havaí (1961) and Roma, Convite ao Amor (1963). Joby Baker also appeared in all 3 Gidget movies (as different characters).

He is the only regular cast member of O Túnel do Tempo (1966) TV series, who did not appear on the Terra de Gigantes (1968) TV series (the other four members were Robert Colbert, Whit Bissell, John Zaremba, and Lee Meriwether), which was also an Irwin Allen-produced show.

During the late 1950s and early 1960s, he had notable starring and supporting roles in films including Gidget (1959) and its sequels; The Gene Krupa Story (1959); All the Young Men (1960); The Guns of Navarone (1961) and Diamond Head (1962).

He was an American television and film actor, television director, and singer.

Before his death, he was experiencing issues to his aortic valve and was unable to undergo surgery to correct it.
