When I used to look back on my childhood - in the days before the internet’s all-seeing taint - there were three things that I always assumed were as much a constant of my young life as excessive sugar intake and making up innumerable excuses for having torn my trousers.

The first was Bertha (lovely Bertha), the stop motion-animated kids TV show helmed by Ivor Wood about a sentient factory machine - the titular Bertha - whose exploits helped trick a generation of British children into thinking that factory life was a non-stop cavalcade of japery, typified by super-advanced AI, funny wee robots and, most unrealistically of all, smiling faces. Let the (glamour) games begin! The Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William kicked off the London 2012 Olympic celebrations Friday during a gala at The Royal Albert Hall, hosted by the British Olympic Association. Kate, 30, donned a teal Jenny Packham floor-length gown and wore her hair up at the event - called Our Greatest Team Rises - which raises money to back Great Britain's team at this year's Games. Celebrating their big achievements, Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal were the guests of honor at a London dinner party on Sunday night (July 4).

The tennis stars were all dressed up as they attended the 2010 Wimbledon Gala Dinner at the Intercontinental Hotel.

Also on hand for the swanky soiree were Tim Henman and his wife Lucy Heald, Annabel Croft, Vania King, John Inverdale and Cliff Richard, among many others.

The party was held after Miss Williams easily won the women's championship on Saturday over Vera Zvonareva by a score of 6-3, 6-2.

Meanwhile, Mr Nadal claimed the men's title on Sunday morning over Tomas Berdych in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4.

Ugly Betty's season three premiere pulled in 1.83m (10.5%) for Channel 4 last night during the 10pm hour, according to early ratings figures. The audience is down around 650k on the season two premiere, which had 2.48m (11.7%) on October 10, 2007. The season one opener attracted an impressive 4.5m (19%) on January 5, 2007. Last night's Betty was broadcast after the Big Brother highlights show, which managed 1.78m (8.4%). A special live nominations show aired after the America Ferrera-fronted series, grabbing 1.77m (14.7%). Earlier on the channel, at 8pm, River Cottage put in 2.18m (11.1%). Over on BBC One, the latest Celebrity Masterchef episode interested 3.64m (18.5%), then the 9pm screening of Famous, Rich And Homeless, which saw celebrities including Annabel Croft and Bruce Jones experience the reality of homelessness, (more)...
