A very close friend, and lover, of Helen Mirren, from their days at the National Youth Theatre.

On the West End and repertory stage, as well as TV, he has been noteworthy for his performances in the plays of Joe Orton ("The Ruffian on the Stair," "Loot," Entertaining Mr. Sloane") and Harold Pinter ("The Birthday Party," "The Caretaker").

Has been acting since 1966.

Has a daughter Kathleen from his relationship with actress Fiona Victory.

Among the performers thought suitable for the role of Roger Derebridge in Força Sinistra (1985). Nicholas Ball won the role.
