He lives opposite the Globe Theatre in London.

He was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2015 Queen's Birthday Honours List for his services to Drama, Charity, and to the community in Dorset. He lives in Beaminster, Dorset, England.

He is the son of Shakespearean actor Alec Clunes, mostly known for his work on the stage, and Clunes is also the cousin, once-removed, of another distinguished English actor, Jeremy Brett, who was particularly known for his celebrated interpretation of Sherlock Holmes on British television.

His first television acting job playing a camp alien prince on Doctor Who (1963) in 1983 has frequently been ridiculed in comedy clips shows and was mocked by Sir Michael Parkinson and Jonathan Ross when Clunes appeared as a guest on their respective talk shows. Clunes has admitted he is somewhat embarrassed by his performance in the serial Snakedance: Part One (1983) and declined to contribute to any special features for the BBC's DVD release.

He attended Royal Russell School.
