Was originally cast as Bud Bundy on Um Amor de Família (1987) with Tina Caspary as his TV sister Kelly Bundy. However, the producers thought they didn't exactly fit the roles, so they replaced him with David Faustino and Christina Applegate replaced Caspary.

Has an older half-sister, Diane Koehnemann Bay, whom his mother Karen Black gave up for adoption at the age of 19. Hunter was unaware of his half-sister's existence until Karen told him about her in 2012. They have since established a bond and Diane is a doting aunt to Hunter's three daughters. Diane has three adult sons.
