Jamaica’s highest grossing box office hit Ghett'a Life which enjoyed a 26 screen UK theatrical release in 2012 will be released on DVD and VOD in North America in 2013.

World sales agent Jinga Films has struck a deal with Mvd to release the physical DVD on February 19th with Gravitas Ventures exploiting digital rights soon after.

I will honestly admit to you that I am rather still surprised that the "life-in-da-hood" movies still have a life. How long have they been around? 20 years at least. There must still be an audience for them, or else why do they still keep making them? Tambay, two months ago, profiled (Here) this "100% Jamaican" (according to the press release) film Ghett'a Life, written, produced and directed by Chris Browne, which became the biggest grossing box office film on the island in 2011.  The film went on to win the Best International Film Award at the San Francisco Black Film Festival, and shared the Jury Award at the Aruba International...

It screens tomorrow, Thursday, September 13, at 8:15pm, at Riverside Studios, Crisp Road, Hammersmith, London, W6. Tickets: £9.50 / £8.50. An “against-the-odds” drama, associate-produced by former heavy weight boxing champion Lennox Lewis, that centers on the story of a young black teenager, set in Jamaica, struggling to realize his dream as a champion boxer, with a politically turbulent community (including his family) as the film's backdrop. Eyebrows were raised and expectations lowered at the prospect of a Scorsese-made 3D family movie – but now it all makes sense. This is less a kids' romp than a hymn to early cinema – sugar-coated with a junior steampunk adventure revolving around an Parisian orphan and his mystery automaton. It's a satisfyingly lavish affair technically, with a story that's intelligent and heartfelt.

We Have A Pope (PG)

Moretti's Vatican satire is wry rather than scathing, which will disappoint many. But there's fun to be had as Piccoli's panicked new pope seeks therapy from Moretti's secular psychoanalyst.
