Husband of Danielle Aubuchon. Son of Dan Blocker. Younger brother of producer David Blocker. Son-in-law of Jacques Aubuchon. Brother-in-law of Remi Aubuchon.

Began appearing on television in 1974, acting on the Marcus Welby, M.D. (1969) episode, Out of Control (1974), at the age of sixteen. His father had died two years earlier. One of his earliest TV roles was on the Os Pioneiros (1974) episode, School Mom (1974), which starred his father's Bonanza (1959) co-star, Michael Landon.

The youngest of four children, Dirk has twin sisters, Debra Lee and Danna Lynn, four years older, and a brother, producer David Blocker, who is two years older. Dirk's birth name, Dennis, was given to him in honor of his father's best friend since college, Dennis Reed, a high school drama teacher in San Gabriel, California.

Dirk's wife, Danielle Aubuchon, appeared in the season 5 premiere of Brooklyn Nine-Nine playing Jenny, Hitchcock's "prison babe.".

Between film, television and theater work, Dirk studied with director and acting coach Harry Mastrogeorge for well over a decade. Mastrogeorge's emphasis on persistent exercising of one's imagination and vulnerability resonated with Dirk.
