The British Bulldogs grew apart over the years and were not even on speaking terms at the time of Davey Boy Smith's death.

When Davey Boy Smith debuted in Stampede wrestling, he was facing Dynamite, in a match where he was required to bleed. Smith had little experience with blading, so Dynamite offered to make the cut for him, despite Bret Hart's objections. He lacerated Smith so badly that Hart had to immediately call off the match and rush Smith to a local hospital, for fear that Smith would bleed to death.

His wife and children had to flee from him due to his abusive behavior and stayed with Bret Hart. Billington later showed up at his home with a gun and threatened all of them before Hart talked him down.
