In the early 1960s, to show friends his amazing soccer skills, Best would flick a sixpence up into the air with his right foot and it always landed in the breast pocket of his jacket, to their utter amazement.

Pele once called him the "greatest football player in the world".

He was one of the greatest players never to have appeared in a World Cup tournament. He played for Northern Ireland with 37 caps (appearances), scoring 9 goals.

As a child, he was an avid supporter of Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C.

He has an illegitimate daughter who was born in the late nineteen sixties. Her identity is a very well kept secret and Best never saw her during his life.

His ex-wife and his son, Calum Best, reside in Los Angeles, where Best formerly owned a (now-defunct) pub.

After years of alcohol abuse, by late 2001 he was told by doctors that he would need a liver transplant to save his life. In July 2002 he controversially received a new liver on the NHS, but soon began drinking again and sparking fears that he would need a second transplant.

He was admitted to the private Cromwell Hospital in London with a kidney infection and internal bleeding on 3 October 2005. He later died there from a lung infection and multiple organ failure.

He appeared on the Wogan (1982) chat show in 1991, in which Best was so drunk that he couldn't string a sentence together.

The Airport in Belfast is called George Best Belfast City Airport.

He was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver in early 2000.

He is the last man to score six goals in round five of the F.A.Cup. Best achieved this in an unforgettable display in the 8-2 win against Northampton Town on 7 February 1970.
