Coincidentally Alan and wife Marilyn Bergman were both born in the same Brooklyn hospital.

He is the son of Ruth (Margulies), a community volunteer, and Samuel Bergman, who worked in children's clothing sales. He is of Russian Jewish and Austrian Jewish descent.

Received the Songwriters Hall of Fame's Johnny Mercer Award in 1997.

The National Association of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS) gave them a governor's award in 2002, and its trustees' award in 2013.

Received a lifetime achievement award from the National Academy of Songwriters in 1995.
