True crime has a massive, dedicated fanbase, so it's no surprise that Netflix has been focusing on the genre in recent months. Its latest addition, a Swedish noir miniseries directed by Lisa Siwe (Glowing Stars), The Breakthrough, fictionalizes the true story of a double murder in the small city of Linköping. On the morning of Oct. 19, 2004, 8-year-old Adnan (Marley Norstad) and 56-year-old Gunilla (Anna Azcárate) were both randomly stabbed to death in broad daylight while walking along the same street. The crime only had one witness, a local woman named Karin (Annika Hallin) who'd been biking nearby when she heard Gunilla cry out. Unfortunately, the composite from Karin and the DNA evidence left at the scene weren't enough for lead investigator, John (Peter Eggers), to identify the culprit.

The series takes viewers alongside John's 16-year-long journey to fulfill his promise to Adnan's father to figure out who murdered his son.

Netflix's newest show, The Breakthrough, is a crime miniseries based on a true story of a double murder that occurred on October 19, 2004. The Breakthrough covers a shocking double murder that goes unsolved for 16 years before a significant development with DNA testing finally nails the culprit of this heinous crime. The Breakthrough's cast of characters is based on the real people involved. Netflix's true crime shows are generally big hits, and The Breakthrough is no different, immediately stepping into Netflix's top 10 TV shows upon its release.

The victims of this tragic double murder were 8-year-old Mohammed Ammouri and 56-year-old Anna-Lena Svensson, portrayed in the show as Adnan (Marley Norstad) and Gunilla (Anna Azcárate). The Breakthrough is another excellent true crime TV show that explores the double murder, the heartbreaking aftermath, and the lengths detectives were willing to go to in order to find and arrest the suspect.

The action-thriller, directed and co-written by Alain Darborg, and toplined by Anastasios Soulis and Nanna Blondell, is being produced by Sf Studios and will be distributed globally by the Us company. Benjam Orre, who previously worked with director Alain Darborg on the sets of Alex and The Master Plan, has been confirmed as the DoP. Film i Dalarna has also boarded the project and will collaborate with Sf Studios. Netflix and Sf Studios have set cast for the streamer’s first Swedish feature, Red Dot.

Starring in the action-thriller will be Nanna Blondell, Anastasios Soulis, Tomas Bergström, Kalled Mustonen, Johannes Bah Kuhnke, Thomas Hanzon and Anna Azcárate. Alain Darborg is directing and haas scripted with Per Dickson.

Set in the Swedish mountains, the film follows David (Soulis) and Nadja (Blondell), a couple in their late twenties, who’ve been struggling with their marriage. When Nadja becomes pregnant they make an attempt to rekindle their relationship and decide to travel to the magnificent expanses in the north of Sweden for a ski hike.
