His elder brother Paul Angelis was also an actor who voiced Ringo Starr in Submarino Amarelo (1968). Coincidentally, Starr and the Angelis brothers grew up in the Dingle area of Liverpool, and Michael Angelis replaced Starr as narrator of Thomas e seus Amigos (1984).

Although he was born in London, he grew up in Dingle, Liverpool, and is often wrongly thought to have been born in Liverpool.

His funeral was held on 18th June 2020 at St Martin's Church, Cold Ash, near his home in Thatcham, Berkshire.
