Subhash K Jha looks back at Anupam Kher’s directorial debut, Om Jai Jagdish, which released in July 2002. Interestingly, his new film Tanvi The Great is hitting the big screen now.

Om Jai Jagdish is as giddying and utopian as family sagas in films go. Three brothers Om (Anil Kapoor), Jai (Fardeen Khan) and Jagdish (Abhishek Bachchan), under the supervision of an ever-patient mother (Waheeda Rehman), try to transcend the inherent limitations of such families, but only superficially. To his credit Kher checks the narrative from lapsing into excessive melodrama. But a film cannot thrive on that alone.

In his determination to be mellow, rather than melodramatic, Kher denudes the narrative of all vigour and vitality.The audience might pine for high drama when world of the spunky mother Saraswati and her idealistic elder son Om begins to come apart. Middle son Jai’s worldly-wise wife (Urmila Matondkar) weans him away from home.

If Jungle, which was released 25 years ago on July 14, were to be released today it would have probably met the same fate as Adipurush, though Jungle was a better far more intelligent film.

Singh played Durga Narayan Choudhary , a Veerappan styled dacoit in the jungle who abducts a bunch of tourists, uses them to negotiate with the government, releases them but decides to hold back one hostage , Anu (Matondkar) whom he has taken a fancy to.

The rest of the tense film shot in striking hues of light green and red, is all about ‘Rama’ Fardeen Khan rescuing his Sita. Significantly, Sushant’s character never touches his special hostage physically; also none of the characters were named after their counterparts in Ramayan.

The trailer for the first film in the Housefull franchise in six years shows Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh and Abhishek A Bachchan on a giant cruise ship all claiming to be the real son and rightful heir to a fortune. Following a wild night where drinks are spiked, they wake to find their memories hazy, and are soon put in ship’s jail after a murder, with a pair of detectives flown in to determine which of three committed the crime.

As one of the biggest budget comedies to come out of India, the action shifts from the boat across to London, then France, Spain and back to the UK as the police search for their killer. Interestingly, the movie will have two different endings, which will play in cinemas at different times.

Two celebrated Indian actors, Aamir Khan and Kamal Haasan, are geared for the theatrical release of their films Sitaare Zameen Par and Thug Life, respectively. Indian thespian Anupam Kher’s directorial venture “Tanvi The Great” will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival’s Marche du Film.

Kher will introduce the screening alongside cast and crew members, with numerous A-list celebrities expected in attendance.

The Cannes unveiling marks the beginning of an international rollout, as the production team has scheduled subsequent screenings across major global cities including London, New York, and Los Angeles, strategically expanding the film’s reach to worldwide audiences.

Stories of nasty catfights between Bollywood actresses are not unheard of. One such incident occurred on the set of the 2006 film Pyare Mohan, wherein the lead actress Esha Deol slapped her co-star Amrita Rao on the set of the film. However, did you know that not only was Esha unapologetic about the same but her mother, the legendary actress-politician Hema Malini also supported her daughter for the same.

In a throwback interaction with host Rajat Sharma in his show Aap Ki Adalat, he had quipped Esha Deol on her admitting to slap her Pyare Mohan co-star Amrita Rao. Though Vadh (assassination) aspires to be a slick thriller about a serial killer on the prowl, the plot is as pacy and elegant as a Chinese Puzzle with several missing pieces.

The cast, though uniformly unattractive and laughably stilted, features the once-revered Nana Patekar in his first major role since Wajood two years ago. Nana plays a shrink presiding over a shallow and shrunken menagerie of characters. The plot seems stage-managed by an invisible hand that thinks it knows what it’s doing.

Except for the denouement, which succeeds in surprising and shocking the audience, nothing about Vadh is the least convincing or exciting. Patekar, who openly admits to having taken over the directorial reigns from the original director, has earlier directed Prahaar, a film about an army man’s disillusionment with the system.
