15 Years Later, Doctor Who’s Most Controversial Matt Smith Episode That Flooded BBC With 5,000+ Complaints Still Infuriates Me
Image
One of the best moments in Doctor Who was ruined by the BBC during its first airing fifteen years ago in 2010. The series five episode ‘The Time of Angels’ starred Matt Smith and was written by Steven Moffat, after he took over as the showrunner from Russell T. Davies. The broadcast error reportedly resulted in over 5,000 complaints from audiences to the BBC.

The episode saw Matt Smith’s Doctor deal with a swarm of Weeping Angels ready to attack his companions. During an emotional monologue that was incredibly performed by Smith, an ad banner with an animated Graham Norton appeared smack in the middle, angering many viewers. Norton’s appearance was reportedly to promote the show Over the Rainbow.

‘A Discovery of Witches’ Star, 47, Reveals One Major Detail the Series Changed From the Books
Image
When it comes to adapting supernatural beings for screen, there are a few tropes that seem to be no-brainers: witches and spell books, werewolves and the moon, vampires and blood. When it came to adapting Deborah Harkness' book series A Discovery of Witches, star Matthew Goode breaks down some of the ways that the AMC show deviated from the book, including just how little blood was synonymous with the vampires in the show. When talking with Josh Horowitz on his podcast Happy Sad Confused, Goode said he's approached with both criticism and praise about the adaptation of the acclaimed Deborah Harkness series. He tells Horowitz that when he's asked about the show, it's usually about why they dialed things back. For Goode, he's with the fans on this one, just as curious about the editorial change.

"I'm with them. I was like, listen, I found it curious too, but it's above my pay grade.

Two More Fan-Favorite ‘Doctor Who’ Companions Will Return to the Franchise, but There’s a Catch
Image
Across Doctor Who's more than 60-year history, it's celebrated plenty of milestones. This year marks 20 years since the show was initially rebooted, in 2005, by showrunner Russell T. Davies, who currently serves as showrunner once again. Now, as part of the 20th anniversary celebration, the behind-the-scenes featurette series Doctor Who: Unleashed is planning an hour-long special. As part of it, the BBC announced they're also bringing back two fan-favorites to reflect on the series' longevity: Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill. The special will air on Saturday, June 7.

The pair played the married couple that traveled with Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor, affectionately nicknamed "The Ponds." Amy Pond and Rory Williams played a huge role in The Doctor's development. Amy's face, as a child, was the first face he saw when he regenerated.

The series also stars Matthew Goode, Edward Blumel, Lindsay Duncan, and Owen Teale.

She’ll play a senior UK intelligence officer who goes rogue in order to uncover a Russian mole embedded in the highest echelons of the British government. “It’s so timely,” Arteton tells me during an exclusive interview in which she notes that Russian influence is everywhere.

“Just look at what’s happening in America,” she adds ruefully, referencing President Trump’s ever growing bromance with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

Bradby, whose day job is ITV News anchor, penned his page-turning novel in 2019. However, he and co-screenwriter Jemma Kennedy (Captain Webb) have shifted the book’s gripping storyline to 2026, which is when the Potboiler Productions series, directed by feature filmmaker James Marsh, will premiere on ITV1, Stv, Itvx and Stv Player.

Douglas Is Cancelled Review: Steven Moffat Skewers Cancel Culture
Image
Before he became famous for Doctor Who and Sherlock, Steven Moffat was well-known for comedy. Douglas Is Cancelled, which has its U.S. premiere on BritBox March 6, brings him back to his British television roots. It's like The Newsroom on steroids with a British flavor and an all-star cast. And it's a wickedly entertaining ride.

The title explains exactly what the show is: Douglas Is Cancelled traces the public downfall of beloved news presenter Douglas Bellowes, who is overheard making a sexist joke at a friend's wedding. Thanks to social media and cancel culture, the situation spirals out of control. Featuring a great lead performance from Paddington star Hugh Bonneville, it's a rapid-fire miniseries that never really slows down.

Douglas Is Cancelled Season 1 Review: Moffat’s Sharp Commentary on Cancel Culture
Image
Douglas Is Cancelled centers on Douglas Bellowes (Hugh Bonneville), a popular TV presenter whose career is thrown into turmoil after a sexist joke he allegedly made at a wedding goes viral.

The controversy begins when a social media post claims to have overheard the remark, and though the tweet initially seems insignificant, the snowball effect takes over. What seemed like a minor indiscretion quickly turns into an all-consuming scandal that Douglas and his team must contend with.

As the news spreads, the series explores how Douglas and those around him react to the growing storm. His wife Sheila (Alex Kingston), a tabloid editor, and co-presenter Madeline (Karen Gillan) each play crucial roles in managing the crisis.

The situation spirals further as media outlets, public opinion, and corporate interests amplify the drama, turning a fleeting mistake into a much larger conversation about cancel culture and its immediate impact.

"I Was Working With a Sack Full of Puppies": Alex Kingston Explains How Matt Smith's 'Doctor Who' Years Evolved
Image
With more than 60 years of history behind a science fiction franchise like Doctor Who, tons of actors have poured their blood, sweat, and tears into making the world come to life. Between the years of 2010 and 2014, those actors were usually Matt Smith (House of the Dragon), Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy), Arthur Darvill(DC's Legends of Tomorrow), Alex Kingston(A Discovery of Witches), andJenna Coleman(The Jetty). Smith portrayed the Eleventh Doctor with Gillan and Darvill, playing a married couple, companions Amy Pond and Rory Williams, affectionately nicknamed 'The Ponds.' Kingston reprised her role as Professor River Song throughout Smith's tenure and Coleman was the Eleventh Doctor's final companion, Clara Oswald. This weekend, during a panel at MegaCon in Orlando, Florida, moderated by Collider's Maggie Lovitt, Kingston reflected on how the cast evolved during Matt Smith's time as the Eleventh Doctor, even if it was chaotic at times.

"I'm Not Even Lying Anymore": 'Doctor Who's Controversial Former Showrunner Addresses Possible Return

Well is he done or isn’t he? Breaking Baz: Hollywood Photographer Dafydd Jones On The Glamour Of Oscar Parties In Black And White; Sneak Peak At Jack Nicholson, Elizabeth Taylor & More
Image
Exclusive: Dafydd Jones first went to Hollywood in the 1980s to take photographs for Vanity Fair. He would lurk, unfailingly polite and unobtrusive, and take pictures of the rich and famous.

The parties were truly glamorous then. Wall to wall megawatt stars. Jack Nicholson and Elizabeth Taylor (never ‘Liz!’) at Swifty Lazar’s last hurrah at Spago in 1993 is what I’m talking about.

The hordes of advertisers and folk who had zero affinity with movies except to rub up against film stars and Hollywood players came later.

It somehow feels strange to be raving on about swell parties in Hollywood at a time when so many people we’ve known for decades have had their lives upended by the fires that scorched Los Angeles County, leaving thousands homeless, and at least 29 people dead.

But Vanity Fair plans to go ahead with its Oscar-week events and will support two local...

While it has, perhaps admirably, finally made its way to the screen, the final result might indicate why it took 30 years to get there: the film is a hodgepodge of hitman clichés, cartoonish ultra-violence, and underwritten character drama that emerges both undercooked and endlessly reheated, a forgettable John Wick knock-off.

It’s not for lack of trying. Eventual director J.J. Perry has assembled an all-star cast for his hitman face-off, across the spectrum of hulking hardmen, dependable action stars, and pure thespian talent. But these pieces never cohere into a satisfying whole – the character work is flatly directed and the visuals often dour and desaturated, clashing awkwardly with the outlandish action and video-gamey roster of colourful assassins. While a mid-movie twist lands well, The Killer’s Game...

With Doctor Who's most recent Christmas Special, "Joy to the World," setting the stage for Season 2 of the newly minted Disney+ sci-fi series, all eyes turn to the 15th Doctor's (Ncuti Gatwa) next mission. When the series returns in 2025, The Doctor and his faithful companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) will undoubtedly deal with the prehistoric menace that rang in the new year with the Christmas Special. The real question is which young, upcoming actor will get their start on the hit British sci-fi series like Andrew Garfield did in 2007.

Indeed, before starring in his first feature film and well before donning the iconic Spidey suit, Andrew Garfield stole scenes from David Tennant in two episodes of Doctor Who. Despite giving a memorable turn, Garfield's career has soared so high,...

10 Wild Doctor Who Theories That Actually Came True
Image
There have been many brilliant Doctor Who theories over the years, but only a selection ever actually came true. From the classic to modern eras, audiences have continued to form their own intricate Doctor Who theories. Every incarnation of the Doctor in Doctor Who was wrapped up in one or another of these theories, but many were simply just that: theories. While some Doctor Who theories haven’t been confirmed or denied, most were eventually shut down by showrunners or disproved by the show’s canon. However, some of these theories turned out to be correct, or were even added into Doctor Who’s lore because of how great they were.

10 Unpopular TV Romances That Eventually Won Fans Over
Image
TV show romance can be hard to pull off, as fans have polarizing opinions about what characters should end up together. However, it's always gratifying when an unexpected romance turns out to be a hit with fans, proving that the characters have a spark. Whether it's an enemies-to-lovers relationship or the two characters seem like polar opposites, the last thing any viewer thinks is that these people would get together and that the romance would be good for them. However, it's often the most unpredictable romance that turns out to be the most effective.

However, in some cases, audiences did see these relationships coming and opposed them from the beginning because they felt the characters didn't fit together. While some TV show couples never should have dated, these couples successfully proved audiences wrong by overcoming their differences and making amends for the ways they hurt each other in the past.

Doctor Who's Villengard Explained: Who Is The Doctor's "Old Enemy?"
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Doctor Who's 2024 Christmas special, "Joy to the World."Doctor Who's Villengard holds a compelling place in the franchise's canon, with some of the information needing to be gleaned from context rather than being directly explained within the show. However, the nefarious organization poses a huge threat to the Doctor and the universe at large. Although not every actor to play the Doctor has had a run-in with Villengard, the show's timeline strongly suggests that the Time Lord has been at odds with the villainous body for a very long time. In the real world, 2024 marked a huge upturn in how prominent Villengard had become in the saga.

After first being mentioned at the beginning of Doctor Who's modern era in 2005, Villengard has survived the transition into Doctor Who's Disney era when the BBC formed a new partnership with the international streaming platform...

10 A-List Actors Who Appeared In Doctor Who
Image
Doctor Who has a long history of including huge celebrity guests, both before their breakout success and after. Doctor Who began airing in the UK on the BBC back in 1963. At that time, the show steadily grew in popularity, and it managed to attract the attention of many of the biggest stars of that era to appear on the show. Even the actors who played the titular Doctor frequently had a successful career by the time they were cast in the show, which helped to raise the prestige of the series overall.

However, since the revival in 2005, Doctor Who has established itself as a show that attracts some of the biggest actors in the industry. In addition, the show stands out for having cast a great number of actors years before their careers took off, and becoming one of their earliest acting credits. With such a prestigious pedigree, it's no...

10 Great "What If...?" Episodes Of Famous TV Shows
Image
A recent trend that has been appearing in many popular movies and TV shows is the idea of alternate universes; that is, different realities which contrast heavily with the established world thanks to at least one key change occurring somewhere in the past. Movies like Everything Everywhere All at Once and Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have dedicated themselves to diving deep into the idea, exploring numerous alternate realities that could have existed just as easily as the ones the characters live in.

However, while many major motion pictures have been entirely focused on this idea, there are also numerous TV shows that have diverged from their main narrative in order to consider alternate realities as well. After all, it can be very enjoyable for the creators and actors of the show to consider how different the lives of their characters could have been. While they all approach the subject in different ways,...

Why Doctor Who's 15th Doctor Was Able To Let Rogue In So Easily
Image
The Doctor was surprisingly open to a romance with a new character in Doctor Who season 14. The fourteenth season of the series saw the newest incarnation of the Doctor embark on a short-lived romance with a bounty hunter alien called Rogue. This romance between Rogue and The Doctor only lasted an episode, but it was well-established and began very quickly. This isn’t the first time The Doctor has experienced a romantic connection with his allies, such as the connections he shared with Rose or River Song. Usually, though, The Doctor is quite reserved and closed off.

In the past, it has taken The Doctor quite a while to open up to the possibility of romance. It takes him a while to establish that kind of connection and trust with another being after everything he has been through and everybody he has lost, but Rogue was different. Even with characters...

Quick Links Who Does Andrew Garfield Play in Doctor Who? Frank Can Easily Fit Into The Amazing Spider-Man Frank Is also Heroic as Peter in The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Andrew Garfield has had a wonderful time in Hollywood so far. No scandals or spells of battling destructive inner demons, just hopping from one good movie to the next, like Peter Parker on top of New York buildings. So, when did the good times begin? Playing Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin in The Social Network put Garfields career on the fast track. He then gained wider recognition for playing Spider-Man in the superhero films The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Since then, fans have found it hard to separate the actor from the iconic Marvel character, but he has consistently proved himself elsewhere. Garfield received Oscar nominations for his portrayals of Desmond Doss in the war film Hacksaw Ridge...

‘The Killer’s Game’ Review: Dave Bautista Charms in an Enjoyably Violent but Otherwise Creaky Action-Comedy
Image
As a general rule, hitmen should probably steer clear of doctors. In the movies, at least, it never leads to anything good. For example, Michael Keaton’s title character recently received a devastating dementia diagnosis in Knox Goes Away, barely managing to get his affairs in order and clear his son of a murder rap before losing his mind.

Joe Flood (Dave Bautista), the central character in The Killer’s Game, suffers from debilitating headaches and double vision while fulfilling lethal assignments and dutifully undergoes a series of medical tests. He’s informed that he has an incurable disease that will quickly destroy his faculties and bring death within three months. So Joe naturally does what any self-respecting contract killer, especially one who’s recently fallen in love, would do. He puts out a hit on himself, paying a $2 million bounty so that he’ll leave the world with dignity and...

‘Duchess’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Charlotte Kirk, Phillip Winchester, Stephanie Beacham, Colm Meany, Sean Pertwee | Written and Directed by Neil Marshall

A young crook known as Duchess (Charlotte Kirk) gets involved with the nefarious Robert (Phillip Winchester) and the underworld of diamond trafficking. Her wrong turns take her halfway across the world, and she ends up being left for dead when a deal quickly goes wrong. Duchess is quick to try and seek retribution, and that means taking everyone on.

The good thing — “thing,” not “things” — about Duchess is even just by watching the trailer, seeing a poster, or reading the cast list, you know exactly what type of movie you’re going to get. Unfortunately, that type is fairly unsavoury. Forget any Guy Ritchie film, Fight Club, or Layer Cake, this time, it’s never been a worse thing to be British. A smorgasbord of accents from across the Western Hemisphere, the Brits...

A Discovery of Witches: Your Next Escapist Fantasy Binge
Image
Escapism is in high demand. News headlines being the stereoscopic View-Master reel of gut-punch tragedy that they currently are, people understandably want out. Those with the means and the energy can travel, and for everybody else: there’s A Discovery of Witches on Netflix.

To be transparent, this isn’t the best AMC fantasy series that’s just arrived on Netflix in the US; that would be Interview with the Vampire, which may be the best series of any kind to arrive anywhere for some time. Breathe deep the heady brilliance of that, and then spritz yourself with A Discovery of Witches’ refreshing mist.

Adapted from Deborah Harkness’ trilogy of novels, A Discovery of Witches is about the kind of woman that little girls dream they’ll grow up to become, before real life and carbohydrates intervene. Played by Teresa Palmer, Dr Diana Bishop is a Yale professor with a...

Netflix is adding 31 new movies and shows this week
Image
It's a new week and a ton of AMC shows are coming to Netflix! It's like they took all their most popular shows and threw them at Netflix. But with the chance to rewatch some of my faves, I am definitely not complaining. There are also a few non-amc movies and shows coming to the streaming service.

First up this week is A Discovery of Witches seasons 1-3! The series based on the popular book series by Deborah Harkness first hit TV screens in 2019 and became just as popular as the books. It hits Netflix on Monday, Aug. 19, 2024.

The series stars Teresa Palmer, Matthew Goode, Alex Kingston, Adelle Leonce, and Edward Blumel. It follows historian and witch Diana Bishop as she comes into her powers solving the mysteries of the Ashmole 782. But she also happens to fall in love with the witch's worst enemy: a vampire.
