- He wore a ring on his right hand that was a gift to him from his maternal grandfather, John Louis "Poppa" Duvall, whom he adored. It was a ring that had been in his family for years and belonged to his great-grandfather.
- Lived at the Fontenoy Tower apartments in Hollywood during his early career in the late 80s to early 90s. His neighbors were Johnny Depp and Crispin Glover.
- John was the son of Jim C. Dye, a furniture manufacturer, and Lynn Maree (Duvall), a homemaker. They raised him and his two younger brothers, Jamey and Jerre, as devout Methodists. Jerre Dye, also an actor, is the artistic director of a local theatre group called Voices of the South. John Dye never married or sired children. His favorite TV show as a child was Jonny Quest (1964) and his favorite movie was O Mágico de Oz (1939).

- He was cremated at Trident Society in Walnut Creek, California. His nephews and nieces transported his urn in a private plane from San Francisco International Airport to Tupelo Regional Airport. It was ultimately buried at Haughton Memorial Park in Amory, Mississippi.
- Got his big break with Taco Bell commercials ... In the commercial he had toy chickens stuck all over his jacket.
- John, Della Reese and Roma Downey all made guest appearances on Maury (1991), The Oprah Winfrey Show (1986), and The Rosie O'Donnell Show (1996). Unlike "Maury", Oprah and Rosie's talk shows were both wholesome.
