Pouring through the “In Memoriam” tributes to Connie Francis following her July 16 death, aged 87, I was a little surprised to find how few mentioned her brief but highly successful foray into film — particularly considering her most famous tune, “Where the Boys Are,” was the title of her debut feature. So, like any self-respecting vintage pop culture lover, I popped on the movie this morning to relive the screen presence that was Ms. Francis.
Francis is part of the ensemble in “Where the Boys Are,” which should be the focus of its own film essay series… I mean, truly, this Hays Code-bending 1960 teen comedy-drama focuses on a group of college girls hunting for men while on spring break in Ft. Lauderdale: some are willing to keep their virtue, some are not. Francis plays hockey player Angie, the kind of wise-cracking sidekick character that would eventually support Meg Ryan in ’90s romcoms.

Scroll long enough on the internet, and the odds are good you may see Arby’s ads starring Cedric the Entertainer from the Original Kings of Comedy and Black-ish star Anthony Anderson. They’re part of a long tradition of comedians shilling for fast-food chains. Some were championing hot wings or pizza before they hit it big, like Steve Carell. Others, like Kristen Wiig, entered the game after becoming a superstar. Then there’s Jason Alexander, who did it both before and after — proving there’s no wrong way to make a quick buck off a cheap burger.
Here are 10 other examples of comedians doing fast-food commercials, so we can see how they measure up against the new Arby’s campaign with Cedric and Anderson…
1 Jason Alexander for McDonald’s
A few years before he played George Costanza on Seinfeld, Alexander was his theater-kid self in a McDonald’s ad for the McD.

One of the most underrated (and rarely screened) Godfatherfilms has a new streaming home.
Paramount+ has just given a critically underrated chapter of The Godfather a new streaming home. As of now, The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone is available for streaming on Paramount+.
The final entry in director Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather trilogy, The Godfather Part III premiered in 1990 to some particularly scathing reviews from critics. Whereas the previous two films were hailed as some of the greatest pieces of cinema of all time, The Godfather Part III was met with widespread derision as a stand-alone feature largely unconnected to the series' overarching narrative. That being said, The Godfather Part III was also criticized for being unable to truly stand on its own without audiences already being intimately familiar with the preceding films.
Despite these criticisms, The Godfather Part III was still a major success at the box office.

Around four weeks ago, it was announced that Ariana Greenblatt of Barbie, 65, and Borderlands, Billy Magnussen of No Time to Die, Road House, and The Franchise, and Ella Purnell of Fallout, Yellowjackets, and Army of the Dead had signed on to star in the “riotous” comedy thriller Hot Ted, which will mark the feature directorial debut of Saturday Night Live segment director Hannah Levy. At the time, Levy said the project is “a psychosexual thriller as imagined by virgins. Mean Girls meets American Psycho.” Now, Magnussen has shared another description, calling Hot Ted a fun, scary, female version of Superbad.
Scripted by Grace McLeod, Hot Ted has the following synopsis: When 16-year-old true-crime podcast enthusiast Zoe’s (Greenblatt) parents send her to Camp Shady Pines for the summer against her will, she’s the immediate black sheep of the Beaver Cabin. A new teen comedy titled Hot Ted is in the works, and it's set to star well-known actors such as Ella Purnell, Billy Magnussen, and Ariana Greenblatt.
You're probably wondering how this movie relates to horror. Billy Magnussen, Shane Andries, and Anne Hollister are producing the film for HappyBad Bungalow, while Javier Chapa and Phillip Braun are producing for Mucho Mas Media. Harrison Ford stars as Jacob Dutton in the Yellowstone prequel 1923, which follows the Dutton family as they face the struggles of the early 20th century. For the legendary actor, the series was also a welcome return to the Western genre.
At the 1923 Season 2 premiere event, Ford spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about why he feels drawn to Westerns. "I love the viscerality of it, I love the physical nature of the storytelling, I love being in natural circumstances," the actor divulged. "A kind of old-fashioned movie-making mostly, no CGI or very little CGI - a little something to sweeten the location. But it’s really essential, old-time storytelling and I love working with this kind of material."

Recently, we learned when we’re going to have the chance to see the movie, as it was announced that Rlje Films will be giving it a theatrical release in the United States on May 9, 2025. That will be followed by a streaming release on the Shudder service. Yesterday, a poster for the film arrived online, coming with the promise that a teaser trailer would be unveiled – and now, that red band teaser trailer can be seen in the embed above!

Rod Blackhurst directed many short films and some music videos before he made his feature directorial debut with the post-apocalyptic horror film Here Alone. Since then, he has worked on Amanda Knox and John Wayne Gacy documentaries, as well as the Will Smith series Welcome to Earth, and directed the crime thriller Blood for Dust. Now, Variety reports that he’s moving ahead with a dystopian creature feature called Die by Night, and he has gathered a cast for the film that includes Isabelle Fuhrman of the Orphan franchise, Ben Hardy (Bohemian Rhapsody), and Scoot McNairy (Nightbitch).
Blackhurst is set to direct Die by Night from a screenplay he wrote himself, with Variety noting that the script is based on a prequel screenplay he wrote with J. Hunter Richardson that’s called The Chosen Few. So if Die by Night is successful, maybe we’ll see Blackhurst make the prequel The Chosen Few as well.

A Time for Killing is a 1967 Western film that is more of a grim look at war and revenge than it is a rollicking shootout in the American frontier. Also known as The Long Ride Home, A Time For Killing is a Civil War Western set in a Union prisoner-of-war camp near the Mexican border where Major Tom Wolcott (Glenn Ford) is in charge of an inept group of Union guards and scheming Confederate prisoners. The prisoners are led by Captain Dorrit Bentley (George Hamilton), a Southern gentleman who is not as gallant as he would like to believe.
Along with being Harrison Ford's first credited movie role as Lt. Shaffer, A Time for Killing is best known for switching directors early in production. The film was first set to be directed by B-movie legend, Roger Corman, who left after reported fights with Columbia Studios, who grew frustrated with...

A distinct lack of Tom Hagen remains one of The Godfather Part III's biggest drawbacks, but there was a reason for the actor's absence. An adopted member of the Corleone family, Robert DuVall's Tom Hagen was among the major players in 1972's The Godfather cast. Following the deaths of Sonny and Vito, Hagen enjoyed even more prominence in The Godfather Part II, where he temporarily acted as don of the Corleone family in Michael's stead.
Despite his evident importance to the franchise, DuVall did not return in The Godfather Part III, and was the only major surviving character to be omitted. Dialogue explained that Tom Hagen died sometime between The Godfather Part II and Part III due to illness, not some nefarious mafia activity as one might assume. The real-life reason Robert DuVall declined The Godfather Part III, however, isn't quite as straightforward.

The Godfather Part III, the final chapter in Francis Ford Coppola’s epic Godfather trilogy, was given a wide theatrical release on December 25, 1990 – and as far as director Luca Guadagnino is concerned, that release date was the perfect choice for the film, as it happens to be his go-to choice for Christmas viewing.
When IndieWire asked Guadagnino what he likes to watch over the holidays, he replied, “[The Godfather Part III] is the best of the three for me. Part II is too perfect and The Godfather is too legendary. But Part III has the ambition of a man who did everything and the fragility of the man who is going toward this older part of his work and his life. And it’s full of this longing melancholy. The scene where Diane Keaton listens to her son sing at the party in the villa, where she wanders in her...

One of the most panned movies in the repertoire of the late, great Robin Williams has now been given a new appraisal by Academy Award nominee and Challengers director Luca Guadagnino. In an interview with Sight and Sound, the filmmaker jumped to the defense of Williams and director Francis Ford Coppola’s 1996 coming-of-age comedy-drama, Jack, which finds Williams playing a young boy who, due to a rare genetic condition, looks like a man in his mid-40s.
Perfectly suited to Williams’ unstoppable, infectious energy, and despite a performance that is equal parts heartwarming and heartbreaking, Jack was savaged by critics upon release. The movie stands at just 17% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, with legendary film critic Rogert Ebert awarding Jack just 1 and a half stars and asking “Who was this movie made for?” Guadagnino, however, declares that Jack is nothing less than a masterpiece.

Going to see a parody of classic science fiction and horror movies is always a dicey situation, especially if you’re already a fan of the films they target. Besides hoping that it’s actually funny, you’re also worried that they’ll just take a stance of sneering contempt towards their source material, as is all too often the case. Even a respectful homage is no guarantee of quality, either. An affectionate tribute can too easily become an exercise in virtue-signaling, a lackluster effort at trying to prove they’re part of the fan club, and an excuse to copy what’s already been done to death. I’ll be a happy man if I never see another reenactment of Psycho’s shower scene again.

The 45th American Film Market launches tonight in a new host city, Las Vegas, amid the tension and distraction of a hotly contested U.S. presidential election.
Despite last year’s edition being beset by logistical challenges, organizer IFTA (Independent Film & Television Alliance) says office and exhibition space is sold out this go around. They hope the bright lights of Vegas can add fun to proceedings and that a bunched conference and screening offering can focus attention.
But the venue change from AFM’s longtime Santa Monica home to the Palms Casino Resort is a big move and has its share of critics — who must now add a leg to their trip for meetings in Los Angeles, or who just don’t find it a suitable venue for dealmaking, or who are anxious about the election this year.

Stan And Ollie stars Steve Coogan and John C Reilly are reuniting for thespian comedy The Players.
One of the biggest cinematic comedy treats of 2018 was Stan And Ollie, a love letter to arguably the greatest double act of all time. At its centre were two powerhouse performances from Steve Coogan and John C Reilly, who not only captured the perfect comic timing but also the onscreen chemistry.
The film was written by Coogan’s regular collaborator Jeff Pope. The pair also made Philomena and last year’s Jimmy Savile drama, The Reckoning.
According to Deadline, Coogan and Reilly are reuniting with Pope for The Players, a comedy about actors performing a Shakespeare play in New York.
