  • Served with the United States Navy during World War II. He was a pharmacist's mate (corpsman) on the USS George Clymer (APA-27) in the Pacific theater. He provided medical assistance to wounded servicemen in places like Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
  • Given nickname "Dobe", short for adobe (the color of Carey's hair as a boy).
  • He and his father Harry Carey (born Henry DeWitt George Carey, Sr.) both appear in Rio Vermelho (1948) although they share no scenes together. The elder Carey died before the film was released.

  • He was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6363 Vine Street in Hollywood, California on February 8, 1960.

  • Survived by his wife, Marilyn Carey, and 3 children: Thomas Carey; Melinda Carey Menoni; Patricia Carey. He was predeceased by his son, Steven Harry Carey (born 12/13/1945) who died of a heart attack on August 13,1989.
