Netflix’s ‘Long Story Short’ Explores More Than Grief and Animated Messiness — It’s About Sincerity
Image
Within 15 minutes of speaking to Raphael Bob-Waksberg, I told him about my grandfather who passed during those tumultuous Covid years and the bookshelf I became obsessed with painting in the weeks after his death. I didn’t mean to; it’s not something I mention often to even my closest friends. But suddenly there it was, out in the open as an off-camera Netflix rep silently recorded our conversation.

“It can be hard sometimes when you’re grieving, especially when there’s other grief happening. You feel like ‘My grief is not as important,'” the “BoJack Horseman” and “Long Story Short” creator said in response. “When I lost my...

Paul Reiser Gets Animated
Image
Paul Reiser has been acting for the screen since Barry Levinson’s Diner over 40 years ago, and performing as a stand-up comic even longer than that. But today, he’ll enter a new arena: starring* in an adult animation show. It’s called Long Story Short, and it’s from creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg (BoJack Horseman). It follows the Schwooper family, moving forward and back in time: a bar mitzvah for son Yoshi (voice of Max Greenfield); eldest son Avi (Ben Feldman) getting defensive that his daughter Hannah (Michaela Dietz) is participating in a “winter-themed” recital at her school that’s clearly all about Christmas; middle child Shira (Abbi Jacobson) falling...

Long Story Short Netflix Review: A Comedy That Gets The Absurd Times We’re Living In
Image
Coming from the creators of BoJack Horseman, I’ll admit I was a little concerned about how they would handle a story like Long Story Short, which is centered on a Jewish family and the decades of life they share together. BoJack often left me unsettled in the way it tackled weighty issues, sometimes feeling as though it romanticized struggles with suicide, sexual abuse, and addiction. In contrast, Long Story Short feels like a breath of fresh air. It’s not all sunshine or neatly heartwarming family tales, but what it offers instead are characters who feel deeply human, full of both wonderful and terrible qualities, and who, crucially, are trying to grow,...

‘Long Story Short’ Is a TV Mitzvah
Image
The miraculous thing about BoJack Horseman was how the animated Netflix comedy managed to place the darkest, most melancholy material right alongside bursts of pure, concentrated silliness. Yes, it was the story of a clinically depressed, alcoholic, perpetually disappointing washed-up celebrity (the titular horse-man). But it also had room for ridiculous characters like Vincent Adultman, three kids stacked under a trenchcoat who said things like, “I went to stock market today! I did a business!” One episode might feature BoJack going on an epic bender that results in the death...

Long Story Short Review — BoJack Horseman Creator’s New Show Is More Conventional, Yet No Less Touching and Hilarious
Image
Raphael Bob-Waksberg made a name for himself as the creator of the Netflix animated hit BoJack Horseman, which won over audiences with its unbeatable blend of biting satire and poignant character drama. Bob-Waksberg brings that same blend to his newest project, Long Story Short, creating a family dramedy that is at once riotous and one of the most touching things you will see this year.

Long Story Short Review

Long Story Short follows a dysfunctional family over the course of several years as they navigate the challenges of love, loss, and identity. If this sounds a lot more conventional than anything else Bob-Waksberg has done in his career, that’s because it is.

‘Long Story Short’ Review: Raphael Bob-Waksberg’s Time-Hopping Family Sitcom Is a Tender Knockout
Image
It’s 2004, and Avi Schwooper (Ben Feldman) is flying home for his little brother’s bar mitzvah. Sitting next to him — on an era-appropriate plane with adequate legroom and extra seats filled by casually strewn bags and coats — is his girlfriend, Jen (Angelique Cabral), cradling a CD player in her lap, half-listening to Paul Simon’s “The Obvious Child” and half-listening to Avi explain why the song is so good.

“‘Sonny gets married and moves away’?,” Avi exclaims, quoting the lyrics. “He was just born! How did he– It’s because that’s time. One moment you’re young, you’re free. The next moment, Sonny gets married and moves away.”

It’s 2022, and Avi Schwooper is sitting in his car, alone. The brown, bouncy curls once atop his head have tumbled down above his ears, leaving just a few strays to crown his suddenly expansive forehead. Jen is nowhere to be seen,...

‘Long Story Short’ Review: Raphael Bob-Waksberg’s ‘BoJack Horseman’ Follow-Up Is a Funny, Heartfelt Exploration of Family, Memory and Jewishness
Image
Television has long had a Jewish mother problem.

From The Goldbergs (Gertrude Berg’s medium-spanning landmark) to The Goldbergs (Adam F. Goldberg’s barely Jewish ABC hit), TV’s Jewish characters have too often seemed to emerge from the same mother — and I’m not talking about the mystical concept of the shekhinah, or the divine feminine.

Small-screen characterizations have too frequently leaned into one form of maternal representation for Jewish characters, a brash and clingy archetype fixated on marrying off their daughters, emasculating their sons and manipulating affections through occasionally grotesque culinary endeavors. These TV Jewish mothers are all played by Tovah Feldshuh or Susie Essman or Linda Lavin, or at least feel like they are. It’s not that this stock character is inherently bad, but I’ve seen more than a few otherwise admirable Jewish snapshots undone by an insufficiently explored version of it.

For at least...

‘Long Story Short’ Creator Explains New Animated Series’ Major Difference From ‘BoJack Horseman’
Image
Raphael Bob-Waksberg, the creator of the darkly funny Netflix comedy BoJack Horseman, is back with another animated series. Instead of talking animals navigating the throes of Hollywood, his new show focuses on a more personal narrative that almost everyone can relate to: Family. Premiering Friday, August 22, Long Story Short follows the Schwooper family over time as they navigate the usual (and unusual) challenges of being a family in the 21st century (see the trailer below). Avi Schwooper (Ben Feldman) is the oldest of the three siblings, who often finds himself butting heads with his sister, Shira (Abbi Jacobson), and their younger, goofier brother Yoshi (Max Greenfield). The siblings deal with grief,...

‘Long Story Short’ Is About ‘Jewish Joy,’ Says Creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg: ‘I Think a Lot of Antisemites Might Learn a Thing or Two’
Image
“BoJack Horseman” creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg’s new animated series, “Long Story Short,” is unapologetically Jewish in the best and funniest possible ways.

Inspired by Bob-Waksberg’s own family, the show centers around Naomi Schwartz (Lisa Edelstein), Elliot Cooper (Paul Reiser) and their three kids: Avi (Ben Feldman), Shira (Abbi Jacobson) and Yoshi (Max Greenfield).

“I think the show in some ways is about Jewish joy, and I think a lot of Jews will enjoy having a place for the Jews, and I think a lot of anti-Semites might learn a thing or two,” Bob-Waksberg told me Monday at the show’s premiere at Netflix’s Tudum Theater in Hollywood.

While “Long Story Short” may be dropping on the streamer at a time when antisemitism is on the rise worldwide and the Israel-Hamas war continues to rage on, Bob-Waksberg recently told Vulture that such real-life crises are not addressed during...

‘Long Story Short’ Stars on Doing a Jewish Family Comedy in 2025: “There’s Going to Be Vitriol”
Image
Five years after the end of Bojack Horseman, creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg is back with Long Story Short, an animated, decade-spanning comedy centered on a dysfunctional Jewish family.

Lisa Edelstein, Paul Reiser, Ben Feldman, Abbi Jacobson, Max Greenfield, Angelique Cabral and Nicole Byer make up the voice cast, and at the show’s Los Angeles premiere on Monday, the stars discussed how it felt to be releasing the show amid the war in Gaza and the surrounding Israel-Palestine discourse.

“I couldn’t believe that something like this was being made, I couldn’t believe something this specifically Jewish was being made,” Feldman, who voices the oldest child of the show’s Schwooper family, told The Hollywood Reporter. And now with the series about to release, the actor admitted to feeling “timid” but “Honestly bring it. There’s going to be vitriol; there was an article this morning that was just a...

Alien: Earth | The franchise expands to TV, but greed remains the true villain (spoilers)
Image
Noah Hawley’s Alien: Earth is at its best when it’s contrasting space monsters with our own species’ worst instincts. Spoilers ahead…

Nb: The following contains spoilers for Alien: Earth episodes one and two.

“You know Burke,” an exhausted and sickened Ripley said in Aliens, “I don’t know which species is worse. You don’t see them fucking each other over for a goddamn percentage.”

Directed at the conniving Weyland-Yutani corporate stiff Burke (Paul Reiser) the line got to the heart of the twin horrors that have kept the Alien franchise going for over 45 years. These aren’t just stories about humans encountering a parasitic species from another world; they’re about the cold-blooded corporate interests which led to those encounters in the first place.

Ridley Scott’s Alien set the template in 1979. At the film’s midpoint, the crew of the Nostromo realise there are two monsters...

‘Alien’ Has Always Feared AI and Big Corporations. That’s More Relevant Than Ever
Image
The “Alien” movies vary widely in quality — there arguably hasn’t been a truly satisfying one since the first two in 1979 and 1986 — but a key thread has endured across the 46 years: However scary the xenomorphs are, “Alien” has always feared AI and the greed of faceless corporations. And in that respect, its time has come.

The latest entry in the franchise, “Alien: Earth,” which premieres on Tuesday, certainly exhibits those political undercurrents while bringing the threat home, both in the location and the shift from theaters to FX and Hulu, where only your neighbors can hear you scream.

Granted, nobody comes to an “Alien”-branded project — a franchise with one foot firmly planted in sci-fi and horror — for a lecture about the perils of unfettered capitalism. Still, the underlying apprehensions feel even timelier now, from the AI threat to the notion of corporations supplanting governments.

“Alien: Earth” lands at a...

How Mad About You Star Helen Hunt Changed Her Mind On Reviving The Show
Image
A classic sitcom star has opened up about why she changed her mind about rebooting the series, after initially not wanting to have the show return. There have been a multitude of sitcom revivals in recent years that take familiar characters and progressed their stories after the initial ending. New seasons of Will & Grace, for instance, drew strong success.

However, it's also been a tossup surrounding which revivals are going to succeed and which won't. One of the more recent examples is Frasier, which originally ended in 2004, but returned in 2023. Following the Frasier revival's season 2 finale, the show was unfortunately cancelled on Paramount+. But there's one sitcom revival that almost didn't happen because of trepidation.

Mad About You Star Helen Hunt Was Initially Against The Show Getting Revived

In a recent interview, Helen Hunt, star of the '90s sitcomMad About You, revealed her initial misgivings about a potential revival.

Paul Reiser Made Out With a Xenomorph for ‘SNL’s Unhinged ‘Aliens’ Parody
Image
This week sees the release of Alien: Earth, the latest installment in the increasingly congested Alien franchise. The new streaming series is reportedly a prequel, set two years before the events of the original 1979 classic and 16 years before Alien: Eastbound & Down.

In addition to the plethora of official Alien sequels and spin-offs, there have been countless parodies over the years, the best of which have featured actual franchise alumni. For example: Mel Brooks convinced his former Elephant Man collaborator John Hurt to recreate the classic chestburster scene for Spaceballs.

But when he hosted SNL in 1995 (one week after the show was trashed by New York Magazine), Reiser was better known for playing Paul Buchman in the hit sitcom Mad About You. So, naturally, SNL’s writers decided to combine Reiser’s two famous roles in the baffling, weirdly lazy “Aliens 4: Mad About You Aliens.”

The sketch begins with a...

Helen Hunt Reveals Why She Almost Rejected Mad About You Reboot
Image
Twister star Helen Hunt has revealed that she nearly turned down the chance to reunite with Paul Reiser in the Mad About You revival. The iconic TV pairing revisited their iconic NBC sitcom as a 12-episode limited series event in 2019.

Speaking to Collider, Hunt admitted she was initially opposed to the idea of bringing back Mad About You two decades after its 1999 series finale. The rise of streaming had seen numerous classic sitcoms — including Will & Graceand Roseanne — reinvented to varying levels of success, but it took some convincing — and a notable change in her personal life — for Hunt to sign on for Spectrum Original's reboot of her 12-time Emmy Award-winning sitcom.

"We were 100% sure we would never do a reboot. It seemed like a really cheesy thing to do, and we’d answered everything, and we looked down on them," she said. "And then I saw Will & Grace, and I was like,...

Paul Reiser Teams With The Goldbergs Creator for New Father-Son Comedy
Image
Paul Reiser is returning to network television. 14 years after NBC canceled his short-lived sitcom The Paul Reiser Show, the actor is teaming with The Goldbergs creator Adam F. Goldberg for a new comedy series on Fox.

According to Deadline, Reiser has partnered with Goldberg to develop an untitled multi-camera comedy series, which will follow the dysfunctional fallout after the family’s failed-to-launch twentysomething son is forced to work alongside his father (Reiser) in the less-than-glamorous New Jersey damaged goods business. In addition to executive producing, Reiser is writing the script with his son, Leon Reiser, and Goldberg, the latter of whom is also attached as an executive producer.

"So excited to be creating this show with the good people at Fox and my two great partners in crime — Adam F. Goldberg and Leon Reiser," said Reiser in a statement. "This feels like it’s on its way to be something really special.

Family Board Game Night Descends Into Chaos in Sneak Peek From 'Bojack Horseman' Creator's New Series [Exclusive]
Image
Not every family is dysfunctional, but each one has its moments when they don't see eye-to-eye or get into sometimes silly arguments. That's certainly the case for the Schwooper family, the tight-knit unit at the center of BoJack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg's new adult animated series, Long Story Short. Set to premiere on August 22 on Netflix, the show steps away from the dark, comedic tale of a washed-up and problematic actor in Hollywood to explore a more personal story of three siblings and their parents set over many years as they grow and change. As part of Collider's Exclusive Preview event for upcoming television shows, we're delighted to share a new sneak peek at a scene that should be familiar to many viewers from their childhood — family game night.

In our sneak peek from Episode 5, all the Schwoopers are seated around the table for board games, but the elder brother,...

If You Love 'The Goldbergs,' This New Fox Sitcom Is For You
Image
The Goldbergs bade farewell to viewers back in 2023 after ten seasons and 229 episodes on the air, following the titular family in the 1980s. At last, however, series creator Adam F. Goldberg has now found his follow-up to his semi-autobiographical comedy, and he's teaming up with another sitcom veteran to make it happen. A report from Deadline today revealed that Mad About You star and co-creator Paul Reiser is working on a new multi-camera series at Fox and has tapped Goldberg to help pen the script with him and his son, Leon Reiser. The younger Reiser is also producing, while the elder Reiser executive produces and stars in the sitcom, which is currently in early development.

The as-yet-untitled sitcom will follow a dysfunctional father-son duo in the aftermath of a fallout within the family. After the twentysomething fails to launch himself into adulthood, he's forced to work alongside his dad in...

Why Helen Hunt Initially Refused a ‘Mad About You’ Reboot [Exclusive]
Image
When the idea of reviving Mad About You first came up, Helen Hunt’s answer was an emphatic “no.” The Emmy-winning actress, who starred alongside Paul Reiser as New York couple Jamie and Paul Buchman from 1992 to 1999, had long felt the beloved sitcom had said everything it needed to.

“We were 100% sure we would never do a reboot. It seemed like a really cheesy thing to do, and we’d answered everything, and we looked down on them,” Hunt admitted during her Fan Expo Boston conversation with Collider’s Steve Weintraub. “And then I saw Will & Grace, and I was like, it’s really good and it’s really funny. Are we maybe stupid and should think about it?”

That change of heart set the stage for the 2019 Mad About You revival, which brought the Buchmans back for a 12-episode run on Spectrum Originals. In the new season, Paul...

At this point, it’s fair to say that no human being who has ever walked the earth has been better at adapting movies into TV shows than Noah Hawley. The man turned “Fargo” into an acclaimed crime anthology series whose only real connection to the Coen brothers film was its distinctly Midwestern brand of dark folksiness. He found prestige TV source material in the “X-Men” franchise with “Legion,” one of the boldest episodic superhero projects of the 21st century.

And now he’s doubling down for his biggest bet yet: “Alien: Earth.” The new series sees Hawley offering an earthbound origin story for Ridley Scott’s iconic sci-fi franchise that IndieWire’s Ben Travers called “a fascinating and frightening extension of an oft-confined space.”

At a private event at Hawley’s Austin offices attended by IndieWire, reporters were treated to a wide-ranging conversation with the showrunner about the gargantuan...

While nearly everybody remembers Paul Reiser as the co‑star (alongside Helen Hunt) of the hit sitcom Mad About You, fewer fans know that Reiser was also the co‑creator of the series and penned nearly a season’s worth of episodes himself.

The show, which aired on NBC from 1992 to 1999, became a critical and commercial success, winning 12 Emmy Awards and making household names out of its leads. While Reiser didn’t take home any of those Emmys personally, he earned six Best Actor nominations, solidifying his place as one of TV’s most beloved sitcom stars.

Netflix Renews 'Long Story Short' Despite Season One Not Being Out Yet
Image
Show renewals are hard to get nowadays. Several factors influence a series' chances of growth. Many networks and streamers look for high audience viewership, how much the show gains traction in the media, especially on social apps, the financial side (how costly it is to make the show), etc. Whatever doesn't yield a return on its investment gets the "doomed" canceled tag. Yet, there are times a show hears the sweet sounds of renewal, even before season 1 becomes available. Netflixjust made the rare decision to renew Raphael Matthew Bob-Waksberg's upcoming animated comedy, Long Story Short, weeks before its users can stream the debut season.

It seems like the streamer believes it'll be love at first sight with Netflix users and the new animation, which is set to premiere on August 22, 2025. According to The Hollywood Reporter, season 1 will have 10 episodes, and they'll be thirty minutes long each. News of the...

‘Alien: Earth’ Poses a Big Question: Does Humanity Even Deserve to Survive?
Image
“Sorry,” says Noah Hawley dryly as the lights abruptly pop back on.

The Emmy-winning showrunner has just screened the first 15 minutes of his upcoming FX series Alien: Earth for a group of reporters. It’s fair to say the room was pretty engrossed when the footage abruptly ended.

The new series brings the 46-year-old Alien film saga to television for the first time and expands the franchise with a prequel set two years before the events in the original 1979 film. Alien: Earth tells the story of a space vessel that crash-lands on our planet and sets loose the collected samples of several different alien life forms (and not just familiar ones). A human-synthetic hybrid (Sydney Chandler) and a ragtag group of tactical soldiers race to contain the crisis.

For nearly an hour back in March, Hawley took questions from the media about the series, which tackles several big ideas ranging...

Will Smith’s Concussion Movie: Is It Based on a True Story?
Image
Will Smith‘s 2015 film Concussion was a biographical sports drama that centered around the study of neurodegenerative disease among NFL athletes. The film’s protagonist, Bennet Omalu, was a forensic pathologist with the Pennsylvania coroner’s office, who discovered evidence of severe neurotrauma in deceased football player Mike Webster.

Omalu called it chronic traumatic encephalopathy (Cte). The film portrays how Omalu struggled to bring more attention to this issue among the NFL players and the challenges he had to go through. Smith played Omalu in the film, which also featured a cast including Alec Baldwin, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Arliss Howard, Paul Reiser, Luke Wilson, David Morse, and Albert Brooks.

Hollywood filmmakers were after the story to make it into a film. The most prominent filmmaker who pursued the story was Alien and Gladiator director Ridley Scott. At one point, Scott was all set to direct the film. Later, Peter Landesman entered...

‘The Boys’ Season 5 First Footage: A ‘Supernatural’ Reunion, Seth Rogen Cameo and Homelander’s ‘Safer, More God-Fearing Nation’
Image
“The Boys” couldn’t let “Gen V” have all the fun at San Diego Comic Con.

At the very end of the “Gen V” Season 2 panel on Friday afternoon, the upcoming fifth and final season of “The Boys” showed its very first teaser to the crowd of attendees in Ballroom 20. It was a brief teaser, packed with tons of superhero violence and gore — as fans of “The Boys” have come to expect — and quick looks at the new and returning cast members.

The action unfolded quickly, but a couple of the highlights included a new supe character vomiting up what appeared to be a bloody hairball onto another character and someone having what could only be described as a violent explosion in a bathroom stall.

Seth Rogen, who’s an executive producer on “The Boys” and has appeared in a handful of cameos across the previous seasons, also made an appearance in the teaser.
