Jamie Lee Curtis is looking to her legendary parents’ careers as a warning sign for when to exit Hollywood. Curtis, who is the daughter of “Psycho” icon Janet Leigh and “Some Like It Hot” star Tony Curtis, told The Guardian that witnessing how Hollywood treated her parents as they aged led to her having an early retirement plan.
“I witnessed my parents lose the very thing that gave them their fame and their life and their livelihood, when the industry rejected them at a certain age,” Curtis said. “I watched them reach incredible success and then have it slowly erode to where it was gone. And that’s very painful.”
Curtis added that she has been “self-retiring for 30 years,” saying, “I have been prepping to get out, so that I don’t have to suffer the same as my family did. I want to leave the party before I’m no longer invited.

Last year, Deadline reported that Oscar-winner Jamie Lee Curtis was prepping to fill the late legend Angela Lansbury’s shoes in a new version of “Murder, She Wrote,” the beloved ’80s and ’90s series that saw mystery novelist Jessica Fletcher (Lansbury) tracking down murderers in the sleepy Maine hamlet of Cabot Cove, as well as in her globe-trotting travels (courtesy of the Universal Studios backlot).
At the “Freakier Friday” premiere, Curtis confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that the project is still on the way, in a dramatic fashion: “Oh, it’s…,” employs pregnant pause and dramatic facial expressions, “happening.”
“We’re a minute away. But, yeah, very excited, very excited. But I’m, you know, tamping down my enthusiasm until we start shooting,” she added. “I have a couple other things to hustle and then, then I’ll get to enjoy that work.”
This isn’t the first attempt at remaking the long-running series.

Goodspeed Musicals has announced a change to its 2025 season lineup. The previously scheduled highly anticipated world premiere of Mrs. Santa Claus, set to run from November 14 through December 28, will be replaced by a new production of White Christmas at the Goodspeed Opera House. Mrs. Santa Clauzse was based on the 1996 made-for-television film of the same name, which starred Angela Lansbury in the title role. Written by Mark Saltzman with music and lyrics by legendary composer Jerry Herman, the CBS film was heralded at the time as the first original musical written for television since Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella in 1957. At 77, Oscar-winner Kathy Bates has carved a new path through Emmy history, becoming the oldest performer ever nominated for lead actress in a drama series thanks to her sharp-witted turn as retired lawyer-turned-sleuth Madeline “Matty” Matlock in CBS’s reboot of “Matlock.”
The milestone eclipses the mark set by Angela Lansbury, who was 70 when “Murder, She Wrote” earned its final nod in 1996. Bates’s latest recognition pushes her career tally to 14 Primetime Emmy nominations, which already include two wins for guest and supporting roles.

Kathy Bates made Emmy history Tuesday, becoming the oldest performer ever nominated in the lead drama actress category at age 77 for her role in the CBS reboot of “Matlock.”
With the nomination, Bates surpasses a record previously held by Angela Lansbury, who was 70 when she received her final nod in 1996 for “Murder, She Wrote.”
In “Matlock,” Bates stars as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a shrewd and resilient attorney who reenters the legal world decades after a mysterious and tragic retirement. The public version of her backstory is one of personal loss: widowed and left financially devastated by her husband’s gambling, she’s forced to raise her grandson after the death of her daughter in a car accident. Whenever a Hollywood epic gets so drunk on its own cultural importance that it attempts to pre-legitimize itself by casting every available star in town, you can be quite certain that the finished product will be either a terminal bore or a full-blown disaster. Darryl F. Zanuck's "The Longest Day" is very much the former, a 178-minute grind that tries and largely fails to thrust moviegoers into the middle of the D-Day invasion via docudrama techniques; it's often technically impressive, but it quickly turns into a game of spot-the-star, which pulls us straight out of the movie. And then there's 1967's "Casino Royale," a celebrity-studded James Bond parody that feels like watching an exclusive, booze-fueled bash from the house across the street.
There are obvious exceptions, but they come with the caveat of knowingly satirizing Hollywood's insularity (Robert Altman's "The Player") or simply being a hot project that...

The 1960s gave us cinema classics that everyone knows, but what about the hidden gems? While 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Graduate get all the attention, countless underrated masterpieces from this revolutionary decade tackled themes that feel surprisingly current.
From political paranoia to technological anxiety, these films were way ahead of their time, addressing issues that wouldn’t become mainstream talking points until decades later. Many were box office failures or met with confusion, yet today they feel almost prophetic in their insight.
Let’s dive into twenty forgotten treasures that deserve a spot on your watchlist, movies that somehow predicted the world we’re living in today.

Talk about a movie that hits different in 2025. John Frankenheimer‘s paranoid thriller about political brainwashing and conspiracy feels like it was ripped from today’s headlines.

Media in the '80s was full of larger-than-life personalities, and TV was no exception. From high-concept action to star-driven crime solving and even confined comedies, bigger was usually better. Some of the best shows just kept growing, and a couple of the titles on this list of the best 1980s TV shows are still around (or at least have been revived very recently). Those that didn't last nonetheless made their mark on pop culture at large.
While not every show named below is an American show, they are all, to some degree, scripted. Even though the decade spawned many iconic talk shows and nonfiction programming, with hosts ranging from Phil Donahue to Robin Leach, those are best covered elsewhere. These are the stories that kept us coming back to their characters, actors, plots, and wild gimmicks, in a decade where money was seemingly no object, and TV tried to cater to every age group.

The older I get, the more I realize that neither my parents nor teachers properly prepared me for the wonders and horrors of adulthood. At 44, bills are gobbling my bank account like Pac-Man eats Power Pellets, and a Nintendo Switch 2 costs nearly $900 Canadian. Inflation, baby! If I had switched bodies with an adult back in the day, it could have provided some much-needed perspective about the crushing reality of middle age. Today, Disney is ready to make people across the age spectrum feel the burn with its latest trailer for Freakier Friday, the long-awaited sequel to the 2003 comedy starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis.
The upcoming cinematic romp brings the bodyswap mechanic back with style as the switcharoo magic extends to other members of the Coleman family. In addition to the Freakier Friday trailer, Disney dropped a new poster for the film featuring Lohan and Curtis mugging for the...

Broadway diva Patti LuPone stated during an interview that she and fellow theater star Audra McDonald are “not friends,” and she also appeared to slam McDonald’s performance in the recently revived Broadway musical Gypsy.
During an interview with The New Yorker, LuPone stated that McDonald was “not a friend” and that the two of them had drifted apart a long time ago. The reporter also mentioned that the singer did not care to elaborate.
LuPone was then asked by the reporter what she thought about McDonald’s performance as Mama Rose, the main character of Gypsy, for which she was praised in numerous reviews of this musical’s revival.
Schulman then mentioned that, upon hearing this question, the singer “stared at him in silence for 15 seconds.”
“Then she turned to the window and sighed, ‘What a beautiful day,'” he went on to say.

Everybody loves a cozy mystery. There's nothing quite like curling up with a warm blanket and a mystery show that wraps things up each episode, following a quirky mystery-solver of one kind or another. Whether we're following someone like murder mystery author Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury) on "Murder, She Wrote" or traveling truth-teller Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne) on "Poker Face," there's just something about cozy mysteries that soothes the soul. Now, there's another great cozy mystery series that's joined the crew: "Elsbeth," starring Carrie Preston as the titular crime-solver. The CBS show is actually a spin-off of "The Good Wife" and "The Good Fight," on which Preston initially played unconventional Chicago attorney Elsbeth Tascioni. On her own series, however, the character is working with the New York Police Department to solve crimes instead of prosecute them.

Emmy-winning actress Loretta Swit, best known for her iconic portrayal of Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan on M*A*S*H's 11 seasons, passed away on May 30 at the age of 87. Beyond her unforgettable role on the hit series, Swit leaves behind an incredible legacy, including an Emmy record that may never be broken.
From 1974 to 1983, Swit earned 10 consecutive Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy, Variety, or Music Series nominations for playing "Hot Lips" — the most consecutive bids ever in this category. This incredible streak also ties Swit with Rhea Perlman for the most nominations in the category overall. However, Swit’s achievement stands out because all 10 of her nominations were consecutive, while Perlman’s 10 nods for playing Carla Tortelli in Cheers were not; Perlman missed a nomination in 1992 before earning her 10th in 1993.
Swit's first of two wins came on her seventh try, but unfortunately she wasn't there to accept it.

Sometimes the real world can be a little overwhelming, and there are few things as soothing as curling up with your warm beverage of choice and a cozy mystery. Whether you prefer your detectives to be rumpled little guys with cigars or more refined figures with impeccable mustaches, there's just nothing quite like watching them solve crimes using their skills of perception and deduction. And while there have been a handful of spectacular mystery storytellers over the years, few can compare with the oeuvre of author Agatha Christie.
Over her expansive career, Christie wrote and published 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections. Her two most famous detectives were Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, and over the years, dozens of film and TV adaptations were made about them and their exploits. Sleuths, by and large, aren’t given the luxury of lying low. Worn-down beat detectives are always getting called to the next crime scene. Part-time investigators can’t resist a femme fatale’s desperate pleas (or ample pocketbook). But even when you set aside their professional obligations, puzzle-solvers usually don’t know what to do with themselves when the game is not yet afoot. Typically, gumshoes crack cases by compulsion.
Take Rian Johnson’s last “Knives Out” mystery: At the start of “Glass Onion,” Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) has grown frustrated by the pandemic’s stultifying effect on real-world brainteasers. With too much time off (and too much time moping in the tub), he thinks he’s going insane. He’s tried reading books, he’s tried playing games, he’s even enlisted help from a few similarly-minded peers (including Angela Lansbury and “Poker Face” star Natasha Lyonne). But nothing helps.

Audra McDonald became the most Tony-nominated performer in history Thursday.
McDonald earned her 11th Tony nomination for her star role as Rose in Gypsy on Broadway. She had previously held the title in a tie with the late Julie Harris and Chita Rivera, who had 10 nominations each.
The actress is already the most-awarded performer in Tony history, with six Tony Award wins for her roles in 1994’s Carousel, 1996’s Master Class, 1998’s Ragtime, 2004’s A Raisin in the Sun, 2012’s Porgy and Bess and 2014’s Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill.
And yet, when McDonald was told by her husband, fellow actor Will Swenson, that she had been nominated and learned she had set a new record, she was in a state of disbelief.

The great Angela Lansbury, winner of five Tony Awards and an honorary Oscar, and nominee for three Oscars and 18 Primetime Emmys besides -- passed away in 2022 at the age of 96, leaving a legacy so large, it cannot be measured by other mortals in the acting sphere. Lansbury was one of the more versatile actresses of her generation, playing innocent girls, scheming villainesses and murderers, heroes, crones, and loving matrons all with equal aplomb.
Lansbury was already a sizable celebrity by 1984 when she took the role of Jessica Fletcher on the long-running detective series "Murder, She Wrote." Fletcher was a retired English-teacher-turned-mystery-author who became embroiled in a series of murders in her small town of Cabot Cove, Maine. It was a cozy and intelligent series, buoyed by Lansbury's personable performance. The series ran for 247 episodes over 12 seasons. Frustratingly, Lansbury won none of 12 Emmys for which she was nominated for "Murder, She Wrote.

Kathy Bates is winning cases on screen, and might win over Emmy voters next.
Bates, a titan of stage and screen, is poised to make Emmy history this year. If she receives a nomination for her magnetic performance in CBS’s “Matlock” reboot, she will become the oldest nominee ever in the lead drama actress category — at the age of 77.
Bates, born June 28, 1948, would be just two weeks past her birthday when the 2025 Emmy nominations are announced on July 17. Should her name be called — as many believe she’s the current frontrunner in the category — she would surpass the record held by Angela Lansbury, who was 70 when she received her final nomination in 1996 for “Murder, She Wrote.”
In “Matlock,” Bates plays Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a woman who reenters the legal world decades after retiring under seemingly tragic circumstances. The public version of her story is that she was widowed and...

There's something very comforting about curling up with a cozy murder mystery. Easy-going, nostalgic, and usually low on violence after an inciting incident, they can be the perfect antidote to the stresses of modern life. Sure, a few people might get killed, but you know that the bad guys will (almost) always get their comeuppance and order in the movie's self-contained world will be restored by the time the credits roll. Little wonder that the format enjoyed a resurgence during the pandemic with millions seeking solace from the likes of "Murder, She Wrote" and "Columbo." These old shows are so relaxing, their modern-day equivalents like "Poker Face" even helped me beat insomnia a few years back.
Although the term "cozy mystery" didn't exist when she was writing, Agatha Christie is now regarded as the mother of the format. After introducing Hercule Poirot in her first novel, "The Mysterious Affair at...

What do The Fox and the Hound, Fantasia, and The Manchurian Candidate all have in common? They're all movies the cast and crew of Mufasa: The Lion King would place next to the Disney prequel's physical release on their shelves. Barry Jenkins's box-office-busting photorealistic animated musical drama is coming to store shelves on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on April 1, and to celebrate, Collider can share an exclusive video with the stars involved talking through what films deserve to sit with their creation. Whether for sentimental reasons, a Disney connection, or because they prefer to be neat and alphabetized, each person featured has a different answer for how they're displaying the new release with the movies they own.

I never like telling people they’re wrong about what they think. But sometimes, when I hear people say things, it seems like they’re not telling you what they think at all. They’re repeating observations they’ve heard but haven’t really thought much about. Spend a few minutes digging through those thoughts, and suddenly they no longer make sense.

From Snow White to Cinderella, the cinematic world has seen many retellings of these fairy tales over the years. Many of these tales, like Sleeping Beauty and Hansel and Gretel, crossed themselves to the horror genre with a mix of fantasy. One such film from the 80s doesn't just retell the tale of Little Red Riding Hood but turns the classic bedtime story into a dark, haunting and unforgettable cinematic experience. Neil Jordan's The Company of Wolves, rather than showing a colorful, happy fairytale, confronts the darker aspects of desire and fear. The film plunges the audience into its subconscious, revealing the unsettling truths hidden beneath the surface. Even 41 years later, this British fantasy film stands as one of the greatest gothic tales ever told in cinema.

Stranger Things's Sherman Augustus is leaving the Midwest and heading to the DC Universe. The veteran actor and former NFL player recently joined the cast of Dcu's Lanterns, and is set to portray John Senior, the father of Aaron Pierre's character, John Stewart. John Senior is said to be the sort of parent who holds onto the past and is the definition of stubborn. His role will also be recurring, so viewers will see him often throughout the upcoming HBO drama series based on the DC Green Lantern comic. Augustus joins the show's stars, Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler (who will play Hal Jordan), and Kelly MacDonald, who signed on as the series' regular character Kerry (a sheriff who takes her job very seriously).
A team-up that involves a veteran and their new recruit will always be dramatic and action-packed with a splash of humor here and there.

There was an all-too-brief time in the 1990s when films dealing with Cold War subject matter felt antiquated. With the break-up of the Soviet Union and the spread of democracy throughout Eastern Europe, we had good reason to believe that the West's steadfast example of representative government had won out in the global marketplace of ideas. Countries that had been driven into financial misery by corrupt authoritarian leaders were suddenly eager to get in on the capitalism game. Alas, as most of us already knew, there's not a more corruptible game in town when laws aren't enforced. One look at the daily headlines makes it clear that these Cold War movies aren't just relevant again -- they're grim dispatches from a bizarro world where the West came out on top of this chilling conflict.

Eighty years before Isabella Rossellini landed her first Academy Award nomination, her mother won her first Oscar.
Ingrid Bergman was named best actress for her turn in Gaslight, George Cukor’s 1944 feature centering on a woman whose husband suggests that she is losing her sanity after they move into the London home where her aunt was murdered a decade earlier. The film also starred Angela Lansbury in her Oscar-nominated feature debut.
The Hollywood Reporter noted in June 1943 that Bergman, who had appeared in Casablanca the year prior, had been cast in Gaslight, Cukor’s first project since his World War II stint in the Army (earlier, he had directed such classics as 1940’s The Philadelphia Story). MGM released Gaslight in May 1944 to box office success and critical acclaim. It collected $4.6 million ($83 million today), and THR‘s review praised the “extraordinary” film as “the job for which Cukor admirers have been waiting.

What makes an actor? Since the very first Screen Actors Guild Awards in 1995, actors have shared what it means to work in Hollywood with the “I am an actor” speech.
The tradition began with Angela Lansbury, who detailed her accomplishments on screen at the inaugural SAG Awards: “I’ve been Elizabeth Taylor’s sister, Spencer Tracy’s mistress, Elvis’ mother, and a singing teapot,” she said. She reminded her peers that, “at one time or another, everyone loves the opportunity to act,” even a child with a creative imagination for playing pretend. And she embraced the spirit of the SAG Awards as a night dedicated to “the art and craft of acting by the people who should know about it.”
